Selection of Entomopathogenic Fungi to Control green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer)

The green peach aphid, Myzus persicae Sulzer, is one of the most important pests affecting protected and open-grown crops, because they cause direct damage by feeding on crops and indirect damage as virus vectors. It has recently become a serious problem because of the continuous use of insecticide resulting in resistance among green peach aphid population. Thus, the development of entomopathogenic fungi as aphid biocontrol agents has received increasing interest as part of integrated control strategies. In this study, we report the screening result of pathogenic fungi for the control of green peach aphid. Initial screenings were performed using 347 isolates of putative pathogenic fungi from Korea soils. As results, 20 isolates of entomopathogenic fungi were isolated from cadavers of green peach aphid supporting fungal conidiation. These isolates were identified as three strains of Lecanicillium attenuatum, nine strains of Beauveria bassiana, one strain of Metarhizium anisopliae, one strain of Metarhizium flavoviride, five strains of Paecilomyces lilacinus, one strain of Aspergillus sp. by microscopic examination, genetic sequencing of the ITS region and Universally Primed PCR (UP-PCR). Based on the screening results, twenty isolates were tested for their pathogenicity against adult green peach aphid. All fungal isolates were pathogenic to green peach aphid but mortality varied with isolates. These entomopathogenic fungi may be useful to develop eco-friendly insecticide to control green peach aphid.

<P>This paper presents a phase-cut dimmable ac–dc buck LED driver for electrolytic capacitor-less LED lighting applications. In the driver, the sine-reference band (SRB)-controlled average current technique is proposed to perform rectified sine-average current control and phase-cut dimming control. The rectified sine-average current control can regulate the average value of sine-wave LED current, maintaining a high power factor (PF) over a wide range of ac input voltage and output LED load. The phase-cut dimming control not only makes the LED driver compatible with two types of phase-cut dimmers, namely, leading-edge and trailing-edge dimming types, but also eliminates visible dimming flicker at the ac line frequency. Fabricated in a 0.35 <I>μ</I>m CMOS process, experimental results show the line regulation of ±2.36% over 90 to 260 V<SUB>AC</SUB> and the load regulation of ±0.65% within the load range of 10 to 36 LEDs. The PF exceeds 0.95 under all conditions, and the peak efficiency of 90.7% is achieved. The analysis of the flicker frequency verifies that the proposed dimmable LED driver completely eliminates visible flicker owing to the phase dimming variations without an output electrolytic capacitor.</P>

Background: Gastric subepithelial tumors originated from muscularis propria (MP) are partly benign tumors, but some gastric stromal tumors have malignant potential, especially in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). PM tumors are usually treated by surgical intervention and endoscopic treatment remains controversial.The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the utility of endoscopic enucleation for diagnosis and treatment of MP tumors. Methods: From January 2010 to June 2013, forty patients with gastric MP tumor (= 20 mm) underwent endoscopic enucleation.Before endoscopic resection, all patients performed endoscopic ultrasound to determine the layer of origin and the accurate size. Small PM tumor (<12 mm) was resected by using band ligation method and PM tumor (range 12-20 mm size) was enucleated by endoscopic submucosal resection (ESD) technique using various endo-knifes. Tumor characteristics, tumor size, procedure technique, complete resection rate and recurrence were analyzed. Results: A total 40 patients (16 men, 24 women; mean age 50.3 years) were eligible for inclusion in this study. The histologic diagnosis was leiomyoma (n=24), GIST (n=15) and schwanoma (n=1). Band ligation method was used in 20 patients. Median procedure time was 8 min (5-26) and complete resection rate was 95% (19/20). Two patients developed perforation, which was closed by endoscopic methods with metallic clips. ESD method was used in 20 patients. The mean procedure time was 41.1 minutes (range 10 - 260) and complete resection rate was 60% (12/20). Four cases were complicated by perforation, and the perforations were closed with metal clips. The mean follow-up time was 9.8 months (range 3-35). No recurrence was developed during follow-up period. Conclusions: Endoscopic enucleation appears to be effective method for the histologic diagnosis and removal of small MP layer tumors (<2cm). Although there is a risk of perforation which has become manageable endoscopically.
Modified Surface Wave Velocity Measurement Technique in Concrete

<P>A modified one-sided measurement technique is proposed for Rayleigh wave (R-wave) velocity measurement in concrete. In this study, the maximum energy arrival concept is adopted to determine the wave velocity by employing its continuous wavelet transform. Experimental study was performed to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. Results reveal that the proposed method can be effectively used to measure the R-wave velocity in concrete structures.</P>
Hyphantria cunea Nucleopolyhedrovirus, a Novel Baculovirus Isolated from Fall Webworm in Korea

To elucidate the novelty of Hyphantria cunea nucleopolyhedrovirus (HcNPV) isolated in Korea, polyhedron and inhibitor of apoptosis (iap) gene structures were determined and analyzed. The analysis of HcNPV polyhedrin showed a little difference with 97.6% at the nucleotide level but no difference at the amino acid level when compared with that of previously reported H. cunea NPV (HycuNPV). On the other hand, iap genes showed variable differences with 89.0-99.6% nucleotide and 90.0-99.6% amino acid sequence identities. Especially, the 5` and 3` non-coding flanking sequences of iap1 gene had lower degree of identity with those of HycuNPV. Although the phylogenetic analyses using polyhedrin and iap genes showed that HcNPV is closely related with HycuNPV, we could provide that HcNPV is a novel isolate having novel gene structures.
Treatment with phosphodiester CpG-ODN ameliorates atopic dermatitis by enhancing TGF-β signaling

Synthetic oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) containing unmethylated CpG phosphorothioate (PS CpG-ODN) are known to decrease IgE synthesis in Th2 allergy responses. Nonetheless, the therapeutic role of PS CpG-ODN is limited due to cytotoxicity. Therefore, we developed a phosphodiester (PO) form of CpG-ODN (46O) with reduced toxicity but effective against allergies. In this study, we first compared the toxicity of 46O with CpG-ODNs containing a PS backbone (1826S). We also investigated the therapeutic efficacy and mechanism of 46O injected intravenously in a mouse model of ovalbumin (OVA)- induced atopic dermatitis (AD). To elucidate the mechanism of 46O underlying the inhibition of IgE production, IgE- and TGF-β-associated molecules were evaluated in CD40/IL-4- or LPS/IL-4-stimulated B cells. Our data showed that the treatment with 46O was associated with a lower hematological toxicity compared with 1826S. In addition, injection with 46O reduced erythema, epidermal thickness, and suppressed IgE and IL-4 synthesis in mice with OVA-induced AD. Additionally, 46O induced TGF-β production in LPS/IL-4-stimulated B cells via inhibition of Smad7, which suppressed IgE synthesis via interaction between Id2 and E2A. These findings suggest that enhanced TGF-β signaling is an effective treatment for IgE-mediated allergic conditions, and 46O may be safe and effective for treating allergic diseases such as AD and asthma. Background: Mycobacterial infection is a problem throughout the world along with the increase of immunocompromised patients. For this reason, there have been many methods for faster and more accurate diagnosis. In this study, we evaluated several laboratory methods for mycobacterial infection. Methods: From January to December 2009, 635 specimens were cultured with mycobacteria growth indicator tube (MGIT) and Ogawa media. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed with the AdvanSure tuberculosis (TB)/non-tuberculosis mycobacterium (NTM) real-time PCR Kit (LG Life Sciences, Seoul, Korea). The 69 samples showing positive culture results were identified with the AdvanSure Mycobacteria Genotyping Chip Kit (LG Life Science, Seoul, Korea). Results: Sixty-nine (10.9%) out of 635 samples showed positive results for mycobacterial culture. Among the 635 samples, 64 were positive in MGIT, but only 42 were positive in Ogawa media. Of the 635 samples, 607 (95.6%) showed the same results between MGIT and Ogawa and the results of 579 (95.4%) were also consistent with the TB/NTM real-time PCR results. However, in the case of NTM, only one (1/24, 4.2%) was positive in PCR. In the Mycobacteria genotyping chip analysis, the most frequently identified NTM species in descending order were M. avium, M. intracellulare, M. chelonae and M. abscessus. Conclusion: Culturing with a combination of MGIT and Ogawa is recommended to increase the recovery rate of mycobacteria. Although PCR missed a reasonable number of NTM, it is faster and usually gives results that concur with those from the culture. The appropriate combination of diagnostic methods with clinical correlation are necessary.
Enhancing Internal Customer Loyalty through Internal Marketing in Public Medical Organizations

This paper examines the effectiveness of internal marketing in the medical industry. We investigated the relationship between internal marketing, internal customer satisfaction, service innovation, internal service quality, and internal customer loyalty. Internal marketing is composed of internal communication, education & training, reward system, and empowerment. The findings showed that internal marketing has a positive effect on internal customer satisfaction and service innovation. Among internal marketing factors, empowerment is the most important. Second, internal customer satisfaction and service innovation have a positive effect on internal service quality. Third, internal service quality has a positive effect on internal customer loyalty. Therefore, it is confirmed that internal marketing is required to improve internal customer loyalty in the medical service organization. In conclusion, the implications of the research and future research direction are presented.
