Gradient-Type Instrumental Variable Method and Its Application to Channel Equalization

In this paper, we present an adaptive IIR equalizer using system identification techniques. Gradient-type instrumental variable(GIV) algorithm is used for the purpose of channel estimation. The proposed equalizer has a cascade structure of an ARMA prefilter and an adaptive FIR equalizer. The ARMA prefilter is designed based on the transfer function estimated by the GIV algorithm. The ARMA prefiltering leads to reduction in a degree of correlation of the channel output. The LMS algorithm of the cascaded FIR adaptive equalizer provides faster convergence and smaller residual errors than the commonly used adaptive FIR equalizer. Simulation results are shown to confirm the performance of the proposed adaptive IIR equalizer.

The growth characteristics and properties of large size $SrAlF_5$ single crystals are described and compared with those of $BaMgF_4$. Transmission spectra in the vacuum ultraviolet wavelength region indicate a high transparency of $SrAlF_5$ (about 90% without considering surface reflection loses) down to 150 nm, on contrast to the optical loses observed for $BaMgF_4$. The ferroelectric character of $SrAlF_5$ is evidenced by the reversal of the spontaneous polarization in a hysteresis loop. The higher potential of $SrAlF_5$ in comparison with $BaMgF_4$ for the realization of all-solid-state lasers in the ultraviolet wavelength region by the quasi-phase matching (QPM) technique is pointed out. $SrAlF_5$, besides a higher grade of transparency, shows a nonlinear effective coefficient similar to that of quartz and uniaxial nature, on contrast to the one order smaller nonlinear coefficient and biaxial character of $BaMgF_4$. The refractive index of $SrAlF_5$ from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared wavelength region is measured by the minimum deviation method. The Sellmeier and Cauchy coefficients are obtained from the fits to the curves of the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices, and the grating period for the first order QPM is estimated as a function of the wavelength. The poling periodicity for 193 nm SHG from 386 nm is $4{\mu}m$.

We propose skeletal δ18O of Platygyra, a hermatypicreef building masive coral, as a potential paleo-SST proxy in mid-latitude regions, where the commonly used massive Porites coralsare rare. Skeletal δ18O ratio (δ18Oc) of a Platygyra and Poritescorals collected from Ishigaki Island, Japan, shows a clear season-ality corresponding to SST variation. The temperature depen-dence of the Platygyra coral was estimated, for the first time withappropriate sampling resolution, at -0.219/oC (T = -4.57δ18Oc+2.65, r2=0.96). Masive Platygyra colonies show a wide distributionfrom the tropics to mid-latitudes further northwards than Porites.Platygyras adaptation to colder water temperature dependence of δ18Oc suggest its application as a potentialpaleo-SST proxy for mid-latitude regions, where high resolutionSST proxies are not available, as well as in tropical to subtropicalregions.

이탈리아의 슬로푸드협회와 농촌을 취재한 『슬로푸드적인 삶』 (2000, 新潮社), 일본의 현황을 비교·정리한 『슬로푸드 일본』 (2006, 新潮社)을 출간한 저자가 이탈리아의 슬로 푸드문화를 소개하고 이를 일본의 현황과 비교하였다. 일본에는 제2차 세계대전 패전 후 미국의 영향으로 패스트푸드문화가 유입되었으며, 산업화와 더불어 식문화도 효율성만을 추구하게 되었다. 산업구조의 변화로 인하여 일본 도시의 소규모 자영업자와 농민의 삶은 날로 피폐해지고 있으나, 이러한 문제의 해법으로서 저자는 공정무역과 같은 전 세계적인 사회공동체 회복운동을 제시하였고, 슬로푸드의 맥락에서 일본식문화의 가능성을 시사했다.
