The tribological performance of ordered mesoporous carbons (CMK-S) as lubricant additives is investigated at ambient temperature. The effects of CMK-3 on the frictional forces, wear amounts and cycles to scuffing are measured using a ball-on-disk tester. It was found that there was little difference in the frictional forces and wear amounts of the oils with and without CMK-3. However, the scuffing time of the oil with CMK-3 was much longer than that of the pure mineral oil in sliding tests. CMK-3 were very effective on maintaining the oil gap and protecting the surfaces in boundary lubricated sliding.

The tribological performance of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) in mineral oils is investigated at ambient temperature. The frictional forces, wear amounts and cycles to scuffing of the oils with nanotubes and without those were measured using the ball-on-disk tester. It was found that there were little differences in the frictional forces and wear amounts of two oils. However, the scuffing times of oils with nanotubes were much longer than those of oils without nanotubes in sliding tests. The nanotubes were very effective on maintaining the oil gap and protecting the surfaces in boundary lubricated sliding.

Alternating current dielectrophoresis has received considerable attention as a promising candidate to separate single-walled carbon nanonubes according to electronic structure. Recently, the effects of induced surface charge on dielectrophoretic mobility of semiconducting nanotubes were investigated via Raman spectroscopic analysis. Here we present electrical transport characteristics of surface-charge-controlled, dielectrophoretically deposited nanotube array. The modulation in surface conductance of nanotubes effects the polarizability of semiconducting nanotubes, resulting in more effective separation of metallic fraction from nanotubes mixture of polydispersed state. The surface charge was controlled using cationic/anionic surfactant mixtures. The resulting transport behaviors obtained from preferential electrical breakdown for metallic tubes demonstrated surface conductance modulation induced more effective separation between metallic and semiconducting species.

Vol.5 No.2
On April 8, 2021, the revised Act on Dissection and Preservation of Corpses was implemented. The biggest change is a shift in the research scope, from “Education and Research in Medicine” to “Research in Medicine and Biomedicine.” It set up a system to allow corpse parts to be collected, preserved, and provided for the purpose of research in case the institutions, including not only medical schools but also general hospitals that obtain the permission after meeting legal requirements. Indeed, the research using part of a corpse can be same as the research on human biological material based on the Bioethics and Safety Act, except that the donor is not alive. Therefore, the review of the institutional bioethics committee in accordance with Article 10, Paragraph 3, Item 1 of the Bioethics Act cannot be different to that of human biological material research except the matters concerning the safety of research subjects. In addition, the voluntary consent of donors is emphasized and respected. It is inconvenient that the consent according to the Corpse Dissections Act still relies on the consent of the bereaved family rather than the intent of the donor during her/his lifetime. It can be considered that the donor’s right to self-determination take precedence in principle, and if this is not possible, the consent of the bereaved family should be honored. Furthermore, it is also a significant to implement the permit system according to the revised Act on the Dissection of Corpses to establish institutional requirements for ethical and safe management of the dissection of dead body and the handling of body parts’ collection, preservation, and provision. Additionally, this requires a respectful follow-up plan and support of the donor and families who consent to the use of corpses and body parts without harming the meaning of their supreme sacrifices. Therefore, it is necessary to create an appropriate system to support the honorable funeral services, consistent with the desires of the deceased and their families.
Vertically-aligned carbon nano-tube membrane filters with superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity
Lee, Cheesung,Baik, Seunghyun Elsevier 2010 Carbon Vol.48 No.8

Abstract

A membrane filter possessing both superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity is of great interest for the possible separation of oil and water. Such a filter was realized in this study by synthesizing vertically-aligned multi-walled carbon nano-tubes on a stainless steel mesh. The dual-scale structure, nano-scale needle-like tubes on the mesh with micro-scale pores, combined with the low surface energy of carbon amplified both hydrophobicity and oleophilicity. For the tests, diesel was selected as a representative of low viscosity oils. The contact angles for diesel and water were 0° and 163±4°. The nano-tube filter could separate diesel and water layers, and even surfactant-stabilized emulsions. The successful phase separation of the high viscosity lubricating oil and water emulsions was also carried out. The separation mechanism can be readily expanded to a variety of different hydrophobic and oleophilic liquids. The simple nano-tube filter might be practically employed in environmental and chemical separation processes including oil spill cleanup.
