Alternating current dielectrophoresis has received considerable attention as a promising candidate to separate single-walled carbon nanonubes according to electronic structure. Recently, the effects of induced surface charge on dielectrophoretic mobility of semiconducting nanotubes were investigated via Raman spectroscopic analysis. Here we present electrical transport characteristics of surface-charge-controlled, dielectrophoretically deposited nanotube array. The modulation in surface conductance of nanotubes effects the polarizability of semiconducting nanotubes, resulting in more effective separation of metallic fraction from nanotubes mixture of polydispersed state. The surface charge was controlled using cationic/anionic surfactant mixtures. The resulting transport behaviors obtained from preferential electrical breakdown for metallic tubes demonstrated surface conductance modulation induced more effective separation between metallic and semiconducting species.

The tribological performance of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) in mineral oils is investigated at ambient temperature. The frictional forces, wear amounts and cycles to scuffing of the oils with nanotubes and without those were measured using the ball-on-disk tester. It was found that there were little differences in the frictional forces and wear amounts of two oils. However, the scuffing times of oils with nanotubes were much longer than those of oils without nanotubes in sliding tests. The nanotubes were very effective on maintaining the oil gap and protecting the surfaces in boundary lubricated sliding.

The effects of CMK-3 on the frictional forces, wear amounts and cycles to scuffing are measured using a ball-on-disk tester. It was found that there was little difference in the frictional forces and wear amounts of the oils with and without CMK-3. However, the scuffing time of the oil with CMK-3 was much longer than that of the pure mineral oil in sliding tests. Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) sensors, fabricated using alternative current dielectrophoresis, were used to detect decomposed ions and radicals in plasma. In this work, we monitored the electrical conductance of the SWNT sensors in sulfur hexafluoride (SF?) plasma. The electrical conductance of the SWNT arrays exposed to SF? plasma gradually decreased. This result demonstrates that the electronic detection of the decomposed ions and radicals is possible with SWNT sensors.

Dielectrophoretic behavior of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWNT) was investigated theoretically and experimentally. The surface conductance of nanotubes was modulated using anionic and cationic surfactant mixtures. The experimental results indicate that dielectrophoretic behavior of SWNT highly depends on the procedure of mixing two opposite-charged surfactants. Clausius-Mossotti factor was calculated by measuring zeta potentials and solution conductivity. Raman spectroscopy was used to characterize the dielectrophoretically deposited nanotubes arrary. We found that metallic nanotubes were selectively separated from the nanotubes suspension, resulting from modulation of surface conductance of semiconducting SWNT.

The use of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) has been significantly increased in electric power plants. Each component of GIS is enclosed in a metal chamber, filled with compressed gaseous sulfur hexafluoride (SF?) as an electrical insulating medium. However, partial discharge (PD) or arc discharge, generated by sharp edges or small contaminant particles inside GIS, can cause the electrical breakdown of the system. Therefore, the PD detection in the early stage has become increasingly important in order to avoid the fatal failure of GIS. As Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) is good to sence decomposition products which are produced by PD, development of SWNT sensor is proceeding recently. In this study, numerical analysis was carried out, using a commercial CFD code, Phoenics, to obtain density distribution of decomposition product in a chamber modeling.
