Background and ObjectivesPulsed Nd:YAG lasers have been used in various medical fields and show high second harmonic generation efficiency at 532 nm. The pulse duration at 532 nm varies from 10 ns to 1000 ns, depending on the excitation method. This study aimed to compare the effects of 100 ns and 600 ns, 532 nm flashlamp excited solid (FPSS) and diode excited solid (DPSS) lasers on guinea pig muscles and skin.Materials and MethodsExperiments were carried out on the guinea pig muscles and skin. First, the guinea pig muscles, and skin were irradiated with 532 nm FPSS and DPSS lasers at varying intensities and periods. A visual examination of the muscle lesions and an immediate histopathological examination of the skin were performed.ResultsWhen guinea pig muscles were irradiated with FPSS and DPSS lasers, the degree of light evaporation and photo necrosis was much higher with the FPSS laser. There was also higher guinea pig muscle and skin vaporization and necrosis with the FPSS laser than with the DPSS laser when both lasers were used to irradiate the guinea pig skin at power levels of 1 watt (63.7 J/cm2), 2 watts (127.3 J/cm2), 4 watts (254.6 J/cm2), and 8 watts (509.3 J/cm2).ConclusionThe DPSS laser system appears to be more effective and even safer than the FPSS laser system; it delivers more satisfactory surgical results and causes less serious damage to the surrounding tissue.

Mechanosensation includes the detection of mechanical stimuli from mechanoreceptors and sensory signal transduction to the somatosensory cortex through neural afferents. Previous studies reported the sensory signals of flutter (5-50 Hz) and vibration (50-400 Hz) traveled through separated neural afferents of rapidly adapting type 1 (RA) and rapidly adapting type 2 (PC) respectively, and they activated the primary (S1) and secondary (S2) somatosensory cortices with spatially distinct patterns. In this study, we investigated the cortical activation patterns of S1 and S2 in response to flutter and vibration delivered onto the tips of index (D2) and little (D5) digits using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We demonstrated that D2 provided more apparent cortical activation patterns that the event of flutter stimulation elicited contralateral S1 and bilateral S2 activation while the event of vibration stimulation mainly elicited bilateral S2 activation due to the somatotopic neural projection mechanisms of the RA and PC afferents and the density distribution of mechanoreceptors.
Case Report : A Case of Membranous Lipodystrophy Observed in Lichen Amyloidosis

Membranous lipodystrophy is characterized by the presence of microcysts lined by amorphous, eosinophilic material with an arabesque appearance. We experienced a case of a 72-year-old man who had dark brownish, pruritic papules on the arms, legs, and back. Histopathologic examination of a biopsied lesion showed homogeneous, eosinophilic material in the papillary dermis, as well as membranous lipodystrophy. We report a case of membranous lipodystrophy observed in lichen amyloidosis. (Ann Dermatol 21(2) 174~177, 2009)
Analysis of Correlated EEG Activity during Motor Imagery for Brain-Computer Interfaces

Overall accuracy of noninvasive brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) based on motor imagery electroencephalography (EEG) is highly dependent on the extraction of features from the oscillation of sensorimotor rhythms (SMRs) during imagination of movements. In this study, we statistically evaluated whole-brain connectivity using the measurement of linear correlation coefficients (CCs) between EEG channel pairs instead of using conventional spectral analysis. We showed distinct patterns of temporal variations of CCs of all channel pairs and significant channel connections for four motor imageries, including left hand, right hand, both feet, and tongue, in two subjects. Contralateral connectivity was observed in the motor imagery of left and right hands, whereas central connectivity was observed in the motor imagery of both feet. Our results suggest to the implementation of the state-of-the-art BCIs based on whole-brain channel connectivity in motor imagery.
A Study on the PCS Characteristics of a 10kW BIPV System

A BIPV(Building Integrated PV) system is united by a constituent outer covering and can expect dual effects that reduce expenses for the establishment of a PV system. It is a profitable technology because it does not need a building as it is a stand alone PV system. In this paper, output characteristics analysis of PCS and web-based monitoring of 10kW BIPV, were stimulated and examined for validity. The BIPV system proposed in this paper was established in at BIC (Biotechnology Industrialization Center) of Dongshin University, which was composed with PCS and Web-monitoring system.
