Russell bodies (RB) are rare manifestations within the lower gastrointestinal tract. To date, there are only three other reported cases of RB lesions of the colon; two were polyps, and the third was a case of a multifocal RB lesion of the gastrointestinal tract. This paper reports a case of a tubulovillous adenoma with RB of the sigmoid colon in a patient diagnosed incidentally as part of the UK National Health Service Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. A thorough hematological investigation is required to exclude hematological malignancies because of its association with plasma cell neoplasm. These lesions should undergo clonality analysis to exclude the monoclonal proliferation of plasma cells. Ideally, a bone marrow aspirate and investigations for amyloidosis should be performed to exclude underlying hematological malignancies. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2021;77:309-312)

This report describes the inception, development and extensive use over 30 years of elliptical polarimeters at the Uni\-versity of Pennsylvania. The initial Mark I polarimeter design utilized oriented retarder plates and a calcite Foster-Clarke prism as the analyzer. The Mark I polarimeter was used on the Kitt Peak 0.9 m in 1969-70 to accomplish a survey of ap\-proximately 70 objects before the device was relocated to the 0.72 m reflector at the Flower and Cook Observatory. Suc\-cessive generations of automation and improvements included the early-80’s optical redesign to utilize a photoelastic modulated wave plate and an Ithaco lock-in amplifier-the photoelastic modulating polarimeter. The final design in 2000 concluded with a fully remote operable device. The legacy of the polarimetric programs includes studies of close binaries, pulsating hot stars, and luminous late-type variables.

Tunable optical time delay of quantum signals using a prism pair

<P>We describe a compact, tunable, optical time-delay module that functions by means of total internal reflection within two glass prisms. The delay is controlled by small mechanical motions of the prisms. The device is inherently extremely broad band, unlike time delay modules based on 'slow light' methods. In the prototype device that we fabricated, we obtain time delays as large as 1.45 ns in a device of linear dimensions of the order of 3.6 cm. We have delayed pulses with a full width at half-maximum pulse duration of 25 fs, implying a delay bandwidth product (measured in delay time divided by the FWHM pulse width) of 5.8x10(4). We also show that the dispersion properties of this device are sufficiently small that quantum features of a light pulse are preserved upon delay.</P>

The effect of wtlitc light on unaeraten growth of Baker's yeast and the accompanying ethanol production has been studied in a batch process at 27$^{\circ}C$. Over the 80-hour period of the Champagne yeast process without pH control, the cull growth was inhibited by the fluorescent light. Another observed difference between the runs is that the drop and subsequent rise in redox potential occurred much sooner in the fermentation with light than in the fermentation without light. This preliminary study indicated that ethanol production could be enhanced by light as the cell concentration is repressed. The possible pathway, shift of the sugar substrate toward ethanol and away from cells was manifested by another difference as well. As observed under the microscope, many of the yeast cells grown under light budded without dividing by the normal fission process as they did in the dark. Furthermore, the undivided and branched (light grown) cell did not agglutinate at the end of the fermentation process as did the distinct spherical (dark grown) cells.
