Performance of Risk Parity Strategy in Developed Markets

Sunita Regmi(Sunita Regmi ),Kwangsoo Ko(Kwangsoo Ko) 한국자료분석학회 2023 Journal of the Korean Data Analysis Society Vol.25 No.4

This study examines the performance and effectiveness of the Risk Parity (RP) strategy in strategic asset allocation specifically utilizing the inverse volatility (IV) approach. The study utilizes data from 13 developed countries, encompassing stocks and government data, to analyze the performance of RP portfolio. A comparative analysis is conducted between the RP portfolio, traditional 60/40 and equal-weighted portfolios across significant market crises, including the dot-com crisis, financial crisis, sovereign debt crisis, and COVID-19 pandemic. This study reveals that inverse volatility approach or a portfolio with a higher weight towards safer assets compared to riskier assets delivers superior risk-adjusted returns. It presents evidence that challenges the notion of the market or 60/40 portfolio as an efficient portfolio and suggests that an alternative portfolio such as RP may offer superior efficiency in terms of risk and return. Moreover, the study examines the role of leveraging in RP portfolios, highlighting how investors can align risk levels with benchmark portfolios while achieving higher risk-adjusted returns. The findings highlight the substantial impact of leveraging on RP portfolio performance, demonstrating their resilience and superiority even in challenging market conditions.

Fabrication of Ag-decorated BiOBr-<i>m</i>BiVO4 dual heterojunction composite with enhanced visible light photocatalytic performance for degradation of malachite green

        Regmi, Chhabilal,Dhakal, Dipesh,Kim, Tae-Ho,Yamaguchi, Takutaro,Lee, Soo Wohn IOP Pub 2018 Nanotechnology Vol.29 No.15

<P>A visible light active Ag-decorated BiVO4-BiOBr dual heterojunction photocatalyst was prepared using a facile hydrothermal method, followed by the photodeposition of Ag. The photocatalytic activity of the synthesized samples was investigated by monitoring the change in malachite green (MG) concentration upon visible light irradiation. The synthesized sample was highly effective for the degradation of non-biodegradable MG. The enhanced activity observed was ascribed to the efficient separation and transfer of charge carriers across the dual heterojunction structure as verified by photoluminescence measurements. The removal of MG was primarily initiated by hydroxyl radicals and holes based on scavenger’s effect. To gain insight into the degradation mechanism, both high performance liquid chromatography and high resolution-quantitative time of flight, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry measurements during the degradation process were carried out. The degradation primarily followed the hydroxylation and N-demethylation process. A possible reaction pathway is proposed on the basis of all the information obtained under various experimental conditions.</P>

Decolonizing epistemologies of the global South: Perspectives from Canada

Regmi Kapil Dev 한국다문화교육학회 2022 Multicultural Education Review Vol.14 No.4

Decolonization has multiple meanings and interpretations which reflect not necessarily the arbitrariness of the concept but the complex history of colonialism and the struggles that colonized people have endeavoured to carry on. The level of oppression and subjugation may vary, but there is hardly any one living in the global South (i.e., marginalized communities of both developed and developing countries around the world) who are not affected by colonialism. In the last few years, coloniality and its effects on education are critiqued by scholarly community. In this paper, with an in-depth exploration of the colonial history of Canada, I explore how the epistemologies of the global South were colonized, what decolonization efforts are made by indigenous scholars, and what challenges remain ahead.

Superiority of Three-Dimensional Stem Cell Clusters over Monolayer Culture: An Archetype to Biological Application

Regmi, Shobha,Jeong, Jee-Heon The Polymer Society of Korea 2016 Macromolecular Research Vol.24 No.12

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are attractive and potential alternatives to cell-based therapeutics in the field of regenerative medicine. Various clinical trials are being conducted to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of MSCs in a variety of diseases. Many studies show three-dimensional (3D) aggregates as more physiologically relevant than conventional two-dimensional (2D) cultures. Cell morphology, viability, functionality, as well as various gene expressions at the molecular level are drastically changed after 3D culture. MSCs as 3D aggregates provide enhanced differentiation potential and upregulation of pluripotency markers that subsequently result in stemness of MSCs. Furthermore, other biological properties like angiogenic effect, anti-inflammatory effect, regenerative effect, and survival after transplantation are also significantly enhanced in spheroids. Thus, 3D culture is a novel approach in cell-based therapeutics applicable in the field of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering, immunomodulatory diseases and organ transplantation for improved therapeutic outcomes. Various mechanism and techniques have been described for the formation of spheroids in different studies, some of which are discussed here. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the improved functionality and other changes is still unclear and requires further research. Similarly, clinically relevant studies are required to establish the clinical applicability.

      • A multi-tolerant low molecular weight mannanase from Bacillus sp. CSB39 and its compatibility as an industrial biocatalyst

        Regmi, S.,G.C., P.,Choi, Y.H.,Choi, Y.S.,Choi, J.E.,Cho, S.S.,Yoo, J.C. IPC Science and Technology Press ; Elsevier Scienc 2016 Enzyme and microbial technology Vol.92 No.-

<P>Bacillus sp. CSB39, isolated from popular traditional Korean food (Kimchi), produced a low molecular weight, thermostable mannanase (MnCSB39); 571.14 U/mL using locust bean gum galactomannan as a major substrate. It was purified to homogeneity using a simple and effective two-step purification strategy, Sepharose CL-6B and DEAE Sepharose Fast Flow, which resulted in 25.47% yield and 19.32-fold purity. The surfactant-, NaCl-, urea-, and protease-tolerant monomeric protein had a mass of similar to 30 kDa as analyzed by SDS-PAGE and galactomannan zymography. MnCSB39 was found to have optimal activity at pH 7.5 and temperature of 70 degrees C. The enzyme showed square 55% activity at 5.0-15% (w/v)NaCl, and square 93% of the initial activity after incubation at 37 degrees C for 60 min. Trypsin and proteinase K had no effect on MnCBS39. The enzyme showed square 80% activity in up to 3 M urea. The N-terminal amino acid sequence, ALKGDGX, did not show identity with reported mannanases, which suggests the novelty of our enzyme. Activation energy for galactomannan hydrolysis was 26.85 kjmol(-1) with a K-cat of 142.58 x 10(4) s(-1). MnCSB39 had K-m and V-max values of 0.082 mg/mL and 1099 +/- 1.0 Umg(-1), respectively. Thermodynamic parameters such as Delta H, Delta G, Delta S, Q(10), Delta G(E-S), and Delta G(E-T) supported the spontaneous formation of products and the high hydrolytic efficiency and feasibility of the enzymatic reaction, which strengthen its novelty. MnCSB39 activity was affected by metal ions, modulators, chelators, and detergents. Mannobiose was the principal end-product of hydrolysis. Bacillus subtilis CSB39 produced a maximum of 1524.44U mannanase from solid state fermentation of 1 g wheat bran. MnCSB39 was simple to purify, was active at a wide pH and temperature range, multi-stress tolerant and catalyzes a thermodynamically possible reaction, characteristics that suggests its suitability for application as an industrial biocatalyst. • A three-dimensional assemblage of gingiva-derived mesenchymal stem cells and NO-releasing microspheres for improved differentiation

        Regmi, Shobha,Cao, Jiafu,Pathak, Shiva,Gupta, Biki,Kumar Poudel, Bijay,Tung, Pham Thanh,Yook, Simmyung,Park, Jun-Beom,Yong, Chul Soon,Kim, Jong Oh,Yoo, Jin-Wook,Jeong, Jee-Heon Elsevier 2017 International journal of pharmaceutics Vol.520 No.1

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Stem cell therapy is an attractive approach to bone tissue regeneration. Nitric oxide (NO) has been reported to facilitate osteogenic differentiation of stem cells. To enhance osteogenic differentiation of gingiva-derived mesenchymal stem cells (GMSCs), we designed a method for <I>in situ</I> delivery of exogenous NO to these cells. A NO donor, polyethylenimine/NONOate, was incorporated into poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) microspheres to deliver NO to the cells for an extended period of time under <I>in vitro</I> culture conditions. A hybrid aggregate of GMSCs and NO-releasing microspheres was prepared by the hanging drop technique. Confocal microscopy revealed homogeneous arrangement of the stem cells and microspheres in heterospheroids. Western blot analysis and live–dead imaging showed no significant change in cell viability. Importantly, the <I>in situ</I> delivery of NO within the heterospheroids enhanced osteogenic differentiation indicated by a 1.2-fold increase in alkaline phosphatase activity and an approximately 10% increase in alizarin red staining. In addition, a low dose of NO promoted proliferation of the GMSCs in this 3D system. Thus, delivery of the NO-releasing microsphers to induce differentiation of stem cells within this three dimensional system may be one of possible strategies to direct differentiation of a stem cell-based therapeutic agent toward a specific lineage.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • Analysis on Failure of Slope and Landslide Dam

Regmi, Ram Krishna,Lee, Gi Ha,Jung, Kwan Sue 한국방재학회 2011 한국방재학회 학술발표대회논문집 Vol.10 No.-

A 3D seepage flow numerical simulation model was developed for seepage analysis of a landslide dam. A 3D seepage flow numerical simulation model coupled with a 2D surface flow and erosion/deposition model was developed for seepage analysis of a slope due to a rainfall event. The conventional water-phase (one-phase) seepage flow model assumes only water phase flow in seepage analysis, which is inadequate for unsaturated soil domains. Hence, a water-air two-phase seepage flow model that considers both water and air phase in the seepage flow process is also used for seepage analysis. Pore water pressure and moisture content data obtained by the seepage flow model were then used to analyze the stability of the slope. Janbu’s simplified method as well as the extended Spencer method was used for the stability analysis. Numerical simulation results and experimental measurements are satisfactorily in agreement.

      • Insight into phosphate doped BiVO4 heterostructure for multifunctional photocatalytic performances: A combined experimental and DFT study

        Regmi, Chhabilal,Kshetri, Yuwaraj K.,Dhakal, Dipesh,Sohng, Jae Kyung,Rosei, Federico,Lee, Soo Wohn Elsevier 2019 APPLIED SURFACE SCIENCE - Vol.466 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Doping with non-metals like phosphorous has been extensively investigated to extend radiation absorption and improve the photocatalytic efficiency of TiO2. However, the effect of non-metal doping in BiVO4, whose smaller bandgap (2.4 eV) allows for efficient visible light absorption, has been scarcely investigated. Visible light accounts for 45% of solar energy (as compared to only 5% of UV light) reaching the Earth’s surface. Due to its high efficiency in absorbing visible radiation, BiVO4 can, therefore, be a promising material to replace TiO2. Here we demonstrate the synthesis of phosphate doped visible-light-active BiVO4 by a microwave hydrothermal method as a promising alternative to TiO2. Subsequently, we investigated its photocatalytic activity for the removal of p-amino salicylic acid and ibuprofen, two cases of major pharmaceutical waste, as well as disinfection of multi-drug resistance <I>Staphylococcus aureus</I> bacteria. In addition, the biofilm elimination efficiency of the undoped and phosphate doped BiVO4 was studied by crystal violet staining method. A 70% reduction in the biofilm biomass by phosphate doped BiVO4 was obtained. Also, a 4.1log reduction in the viable cells count was observed within 180 min when <I>Staphylococcus aureus</I> was irradiated with visible light mixed in phosphate doped BiVO4 powder. Under similar irradiation conditions, the degradation efficiency for p-amino salicylic acid and ibuprofen are 81% and 80% respectively, a 40% enhancement as compared to undoped BiVO4. First principle density functional theory calculations show that charge transfer from P to O in the doping site of the BiVO4 is responsible for the enhanced photocatalytic activity.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Phosphate doped BiVO4 photocatalyst was prepared by a facile microwave-hydrothermal process. </LI> <LI> The catalyst was highly efficient for the degradation of the ibuprofen and p-amino salicylic acid. </LI> <LI> Effective inactivation of <I>S. aureus</I> bacteria under visible light was observed. </LI> <LI> Substantial inhibition of biofilm formation was observed in the presence of the photocatalyst. </LI> <LI> Underlying mechanism has been proposed through the DFT Calculation. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
