      • The Interannual Variations of the Summer Monsoon Onset over the South China Sea

        Interannual variations of the summer monsoon onset over the South China Sea (SCS) have been studied using data from over seventeen years (1979-1995) of NMC global analysis and of Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) observed with NOAA polar-orbitting satellites. It was found that the summer monsoon onset in the SCS occurs abruptly with a sudden change of zonal wind direction from easterly to westerly and an exploding development of deep convection in the whole SCS region in the middle of May. Based on the criteria defined in this paper for the SCS summer monsoon onset, the average onset date over the SCS from 1979 to 1995 is around the fourth pentad of May. The airflow and general circulation over the SCS changes dramatically after the onset. The ridge of the subtropical high in the western Pacific in the lower troposphere weakens and retreats eastward from the SCS region with an establishment of westerly winds over the whole region. During the SCS monsoon onset, the most direct impact in the vicinity of the SCS are the equatorial westerlies in the Bay of Bengai through their eastward extension and northward movement. An indirect influence on the SCS onset is also caused by the enhancement of the Somali cross-equatorial flow and the vanishing Arabian High over the sea; the latter may be a signal for the SCS onset. There are quite significant interannual variations in the SCS onset. In the years of a delayed onset, the most profound feature is that the easterly winds stay longer in the SCS than on average. Deep convection activities are suppressed. The direct cause is the abnormal existence of the western Pacific subtropical high over the SCS region. Moreover, compared to the average, the equatorial westerlies in the Bay of Bengal are also weaker in the years of a delayed onset. No significant changes for the crossequatorial flow at 105°E are observed for these years. It has also been found that the interannual variations of the SCS onset are closely related with the ENSO events. In the years of a delay, the Walker circulation is weaker, and the sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the western Pacific are negative.

      • A Queueing Model for Node-disjoint Multipath Routing in Cluster-based Hierarchical Multimedia Sensor Networks

        Node-disjoint multiple routing is an effective mechanism for delivering rich multimedia in wireless multimedia sensor networks. And congestion is one of main problem must be addressed in routing scheme. Considering routing paths established are of non-interference and node-disjoint, each routing path can be viewed as a node. And then a queueing network model is introduced to abstract multiple type multimedia packets delivery process through node-disjoint routing paths in cluster based wireless multimedia sensor networks. At cluster header, QoS-aware traffic schedule scheme is adopted to dispatch packets of different priorities. The scheme consists of receiving buffer queue, traffic packets dispatching service based on generalized Erlang distribution, and priority-based sending buffer queue. Then we model the optimal decision control process of multipath routing in congestion state. Finally, we simulate the proposed queueing network model with trust-based load balancing scheme. And the results reveal that our proposed model is more suitable for node-disjoint multiple paths to deliver rich multimedia information, such as video and images.

        Effects of Temperature, Illumination, and Sodium Ascorbate on Browning of Green Tea Infusion

        Browning of tea infusion is an obstructive factor influencing shelf life of ready-to-drink green tea. Effects of temperature and illumination on the browning of green tea infusion were investigated. It was shown that both elevated temperature and illumination led to the browning of green tea infusion, but temperature had greater effect on infusion color and level of catechins than illumination. The levels of unoxidized catechins such as (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg), (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC), (-)-epicatechin gallate (ECg), (-)-epicatechin (EC), and total catechins remaining in the tea infusion were significantly correlated to color parameters of the tea infusion. Sodium ascorbate inhibited the infusion browning by suppressing the oxidation of tea catechins and it is considered to be a more suitable preservative for prolonging shelf life of ready-to-drink green tea than ascorbic acid because it has less effect on tea taste. The effects of temperature and illumination on the epimerization of catechins were also discussed.

        Technical and Clinical Aspects of Diagnostic Single-Balloon Enteroscopy in the First Decade of Use: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

        Background/Aims: Single-balloon enteroscopy (SBE) has been widely used in diagnosing small bowel disease. We conducted this study to systematically appraise its technical and clinical performance. Methods: Studies on SBE published by September 2018 were systematically searched. Technical and clinical performance data were collected and analyzed with descriptive or meta-analysis methods. Results: In total, 54 articles incorporating 4,592 patients (6,036 procedures) were included. Regarding technical parameters, the pooled insertion depths (IDs) for anterograde and retrograde SBE were 209.2 cm and 98.1 cm, respectively. The pooled retrograde ID in Asian countries was significantly greater than that in Western countries (129.0 cm vs 81.1 cm, p<0.001). The pooled anterograde and retrograde procedure times were 57.6 minutes and 65.1 minutes, respectively. The total enteroscopy rate was 21.9%, with no significant difference between Asian and Western countries. Clinically, the pooled diagnostic yield of SBE was 62.3%. Obscure gastrointestinal bleeding (OGIB) was the most common indication (50.0%), with a diagnostic yield of 59.5%. Vascular lesions were the most common findings in Western OGIB patients (76.9%) but not in Asian ones (31.0%). The rates of severe and mild adverse events were 0.5% and 2.5%, respectively. Conclusions: SBE is technically efficient and is clinically effective and safe, but total enteroscopy is relatively difficult to achieve with this technique. Etiologies of OGIB in Asian countries differ from those in Western countries. (Gut Liver 2021;15:262-272)

      • Phase II Trial of Loubo<sup>®</sup> (Lobaplatin) and Pemetrexed for Patients with Metastatic Breast Cancer not Responding to Anthracycline or Taxanes

        Purpose: This phase II study was undertaken to determine the efficacy and safety of Loubo$^{(R)}$ (Lobaplatin) in combination with pemetrexed in treating patients with metastatic breast cancer who failed to respond to anthracycline or taxanes. Patients and Methods: Metastatic breast cancer cases who had previously received an anthracycline and a taxane in either adjuvant or metastatic settings, were enrolled. All patients were recruited from Jiangsu Cancer Hospital and Research Institute, and were treated with Loubo$^{(R)}$ (Lobaplatin) 35 $mg/m^2$ (intravenous; on day 1) and pemetrexed 500 $mg/m^2$ (intravenous; on day 1) every 21 days. Efficacy and side effects were evaluated after at least two cycles of chemotherapy. Results: All eligible 19 patients completed at least 2 cycles of chemotherapy with pemetrexed and lobaplatin, and were evaluable. Overall, 3 (15.8%) patients achieved partial response, 11 (57.9%) stable disease, 5 (26.3%) progression of disease, with no complete remission. Response rate was 15.8%, disease control rate was 42.1%. The median survival time was 10.3 months. Neutrophil suppression occurred in 36.8% of patients who had grade 2 toxicity, and 26.3% had grade 3, 26.4% had grade 4. Thrombocytopenia was encountered as follows: 21.1% grade 2, 15.8% grade 3 and 5.5% grade 4. Incidences of anemia were 10.5% in grade 2, 5.3% grade 3 and 0% grade 4. Only 5.3% of patients required packed red blood cell transfusion. Grade 3 digestive tract toxicity occurred in 5.5% of patients. Other toxicities included elevated transaminase,oral mucositis and skin rashes. Conclusions: The regimen of lobaplatin and pemetrexed is modestly active in metastatic breast cancer patients who failed anthracycline or taxanes, and the toxicity profile suggesting that the doses of chemotherapy should be further modified.

      • Association Between VDR Polymorphisms and Breast Cancer: An Updated and Comparative Meta-analysis of Crude and Adjusted Odd Ratios

        There is a lot of debate on the relationship between vitamin D receptor polymorphisms and risk of breast cancer. Herein, we quantitatively analyzed the published case-control studies on this relationship by meta-analysis, performing a bibliographic search from Pubmed and CNKI up to July 31, 2013. The included case-control studies for Fok1, Bsm1, Taq1, Apa1, Cdx2 and Poly-A were 16, 19, 20, 10, 4, 6, respectively. Crude and adjusted odd ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated to present and compare the strength of any associations. The results of combined analyses indicated that Fok1, Bsm1, Apa1, Cdx2 and Poly-A were not significantly associated with the risk of breast cancer. In contrast, the tt genotype of Taq1 was a modest risk factor for breast cancer development (tt vs. TT: OR = 1.21, 95% CI: 1.01-1.44). To further confirm the above results, adjusted effects for the six polymorphisms were pooled based on adjusted ORs reported in the original studies. Adjusted ORs of Fok1, Apa1, Cdx2 and Poly-A were similar to the crude ORs. However, Bsm1 and Taq1 showed inconsistent results. For Bsm1, OR for BB vs. bb was 0.85, 95% CI: 0.74-0.98; for Taq1, OR for tt vs. TT was 1.03, 95% CI: 0.92-1.15, and not associated with risk. Subgroup analyses for crude ORs showed some association between Bsm1, Taq1 and breast cancer in Caucasians only, but for adjusted ORs, no associations were found. This meta-analysis suggests that the roles that Fok1, Apa1, Cdx2 and Poly-A polymorphisms play in breast cancer risk are negligible, with Bsm1 and Taq1 as possible exceptions. To be conservative, we still assumed that they may play a modest role in determining breast cancer risk. Further studies are needed to validate our findings.

        Easy and Fast Synthesis of Pd-MWCNT/TiO<sub>2</sub> by the Sol-Gel Method and its Recyclic Photodegradation of Rhodamine B

        Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) modified with Pd and $TiO_2$ composite catalysts were synthesized by the sol-gel method followed by solvothermal treatment at low temperature. The chemical composition and surface structure were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Photocatalytic recycle degradation experiments were carried out under both UV and visible light irradiation in the presence of MWCNT/$TiO_2$ and Pd-MWCNT/$TiO_2$ composites. As expected, the nanosized Pd-MWCNT/$TiO_2$ photocatalysts had enhanced activity over the non Pd treated MWCNT/$TiO_2$ material in the degradation of a rhodamine B (Rh.B) solution. An increase in photocatalytic activity was observed and attributed to an increase in the photo-absorption effect by MWCNTs and the cooperative effect of Pd and $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. According to the recycled results, the as-prepared Pd-MWCNT/$TiO_2$ sample had a good effect on it.

        Myricetin Protects Against Cytokine-Induced Cell Death in RIN-m5f β Cells

        Cytokine-induced cell death is recognized as a major cause of progressive β-cell loss. Tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interleukin 1β (IL-1β), and interferon γ (IFN-γ) in combination trigger a series of events that lead to β-cell death. In the past few decades, the use of myricetin as an anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective agent has gained much attention. The present study focused on the protective roles of myricetin against cytokine-induced cell death in insulin-secreting RIN-m5f β cells. The results showed that myricetin (especially at concentrations of 10 μM and 20 μM) increased cell viability and decreased cell apoptosis induced by the cytokine mixture of TNF-α (10 ng/mL), IL-1β (5 ng/mL), and IFN-γ (1000 IU/mL) for 3 days. Moreover, the cytokines increased the total and p65 subunit levels of nuclear factor κB, decreased inhibitor κB α levels, stimulated the accumulation of nitric oxide, increased cytochrome c release from mitochondria, and induced reactive oxygen species generation; myricetin (especially at the concentration of 20 μM) abolished all of these parameters. These results suggest that myricetin might have therapeutic value for preventing β-cell death.
