Improving Deep CNN-Based Radar Target Classification Performance by Applying a Denoise Filter
Nguyen Van-Tra,Vu Chi-Thanh,Doan Van Sang 한국전자파학회 2024 Journal of Electromagnetic Engineering and Science Vol.24 No.2
This paper presents a novel method for removing noise from range-Doppler images by using a filter prior to conducting target classification using a deep neural network. Specifically, Kuan, Frost, and Lee filters are employed to eliminate speckle noise components from radar data images. Furthermore, a neural network that combines residual and inception blocks (RINet) is proposed. The RINet model is trained and tested on the RAD-DAR dataset—a collection of range-Doppler feature maps. The analysis results show that the application of a Lee filter with a window size of 7 in the RAD-DAR dataset demonstrates the most improvement in the model’s classification performance. On applying this noise filter to the dataset, the RINet model successfully classified radar targets, exhibiting a 4.51% increase in accuracy and a 14.07% decrease in loss compared to the classification results achieved for the original data. Furthermore, a comparison of the RINet model with the noise filtering solution with five other networks was conducted, the results of which show that the proposed model significantly outperforms the others.

TonB systems actively transport iron-bound substrates across the outer membranes of Gram-negative bacteria. Vibrio vulnificus CMCP6, which causes fatal septicemia and necrotizing wound infections, possesses three active TonB systems. It is not known why V. vulnificus CMCP6 has maintained three TonB systems throughout its evolution. The TonB1 and TonB2 systems are relatively well characterized, while the pathophysiological function of the TonB3 system is still elusive. A reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) study showed that the tonB1 and tonB2 genes are preferentially induced in vivo, whereas tonB3 is persistently transcribed, albeit at low expression levels, under both in vitro and in vivo conditions. The goal of the present study was to elucidate the raison d'etre of these three TonB systems. In contrast to previous studies, we constructed in-frame single-, double-, and triple-deletion mutants of the entire structural genes in TonB loci, and the changes in various virulence-related phenotypes were evaluated. Surprisingly, only the tonB123 mutant exhibited a significant delay in killing eukaryotic cells, which was complemented in trans with any TonB operon. Very interestingly, we discovered that flagellum biogenesis was defective in the tonB123 mutant. The loss of flagellation contributed to severe defects in motility and adhesion of the mutant. Because of the difficulty of making contact with host cells, the mutant manifested defective RtxA1 toxin production, which resulted in impaired invasiveness, delayed cytotoxicity, and decreased lethality for mice. Taken together, these results indicate that a series of virulence defects in all three TonB systems of V. vulnificus CMCP6 coordinately complement each other for iron assimilation and full virulence expression by ensuring flagellar biogenesis.

Graphite oxide (GrO), as a superb platform with highly dense arrays of atoms and abundantfunctionalities, can increase dispersive forces within metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), which providesa feasible strategy to control physicochemical properties of MOFs. In this study, a series of hybrid GrO/MIL-101(Cr) (GrO@MCr) nanocomposites were readily prepared via hydrothermal synthesis. Theprepared composites were applied to remove methyl orange (MO) and reactive blue 198 (RB198) asorganic pollutants from an aqueous solution. The surface area of GrO@MCr composite increased from2980 to 3540 m2 g 1 with increasing GrO loading amount from 0 to 6.0 wt.%. The highest adsorptioncapacities of MO (235 mg g 1) and RB198 (175 mg g 1) were obtained at 25 C and pH = 5.5 using 6 wt.%GrO loaded GrO@MCr composite; these values were 2.3 and 1.97 times higher than that of pristine MIL-101(Cr). The reusability and stability analyses showed that the sorption capacities of MO and RB198 ontothe fabricated GrO@MCr decreased to 89% and 86%, respectively, afterfive adsorption–desorption cycles. Moreover, the adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms were studied in detail to investigate theadsorption mechanism.
Osteopontin contributes to late-onset asthma phenotypes in adult asthma patients
Hoang Kim Tu Trinh,Thuy Van Thao Nguyen,Seo-Hee Kim,Thi Bich Tra Cao,Quoc Quang Luu,김승현,박해심 생화학분자생물학회 2020 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.52 No.-
Patients with late-onset asthma (LOA) have poor clinical outcomes. Osteopontin (OPN) is associated with airway inflammation and remodeling. To investigate the role of OPN in LOA compared to early-onset asthma (EOA), serum OPN levels were compared between 131 adult asthma patients (48 LOA and 83 EOA patients) and 226 healthy controls (HCs). BALB/c mice were sensitized with ovalbumin with/without polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (poly(I:C)) from week 6 (A6 mice) or week 12 (A12 mice) after birth. Airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), cell counts, histology, and Spp1 expression were assessed. The levels of OPN, transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1), chitinase 3-like 1 (CH3L1), and interleukin (IL) 5 were measured by ELISA. The expression of Smad3 phosphorylation and tissue transglutaminase 2 (TGM2) was evaluated by Western blot. The serum OPN levels were significantly higher in asthma patients than in HCs and in LOA patients than in those with EOA (P < 0.05) and were positively correlated with serum TGF-β1 and CH3L1 (r = 0.174, r = 0.264; P < 0.05). A12 mice showed elevated AHR with increased levels of OPN/TGF-β1/IL-5 in BALF and Spp1 compared to A6 mice. Poly(I:C) induced remarkable TGF-β1, CH3L1, Th2 cytokine, and OPN levels in BALF and the expression of phosphorylated Smad3, TGM2, and Spp1 in the lungs. OPN triggered TGF-β1/Smad3 signaling in the lungs, which was suppressed by dexamethasone and anti-IL5 antibody. In conclusion, aging and exposure to viral infections may induce OPN release and consequently modulate inflammation and TGF-β1/ Smad3-related remodeling, contributing to the development of LOA.

Shigella sonnei is a human-adapted pathogen that is emerging globally as the dominant agent of bacterial dysentery. To investigate local establishment, we sequenced the genomes of 263 Vietnamese S. sonnei isolated over 15 y. Our data show that S. sonnei was introduced into Vietnam in the 1980s and has undergone localized clonal expansion, punctuated by genomic fixation events through periodic selective sweeps. We uncover geographical spread, spatially restricted frontier populations, and convergent evolution through local gene pool sampling. This work provides a unique, high-resolution insight into the microevolution of a pioneering human pathogen during its establishment in a new host population.
