        Following-up changes in red blood cell deformability and membrane stability in the presence of PTFE graft implanted into the femoral artery in a canine model

        It is known that a moderate mechanical stress can even improve the red blood cells’ (RBC) micro-rheologicalcharacteristics, however, a more significant stress causes deterioration in the deformability. In thisstudy, we aimed to investigate the effect of the presence of artificial graft on the RBC deformability andmembrane stability in beagles. In the Control group only anesthesia was induced and in the postoperative(p.o.) period blood samplings were carried out. In the Grafted group under general anesthesia, the leftfemoral artery was isolated, from which a 3.5 cm segment was resected and a PTFE graft (O.D.: 3 mm)of equal in length was implanted into the gap. On the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 14th p.o. days blood was collectedthe cephalic veins and RBC deformability was determined ektacytometry (LoRRca MaxSis Osmoscan). Membrane stability test consisted of two deformability measurements before and after the cells werebeing exposed to mechanical stress (60 or 100 Pa for 300 seconds). Compared to the Control group andthe baseline values the red blood cell deformability showed significant deterioration on the 3rd, 5th andmainly on the 7th postoperative day after the graft implantation. The membrane stability of erythrocyterevealed marked inter-group difference on the 3rd, 5th and 7th day: in the Grafted group the deformabilitydecreased and during the membrane stability test smaller difference was observed between the statesbefore and after shearing. We concluded that the presence of a PTFE graft in the femoral artery maycause changes in RBC deformability in the first p.o. week. RBC membrane stability investigation showsa lower elongation index profile for the grafted group and a narrowed alteration in the deformabilitycurves due to mechanical stress.

        How the COVID-19 pandemic affected the severity and clinical presentation of diverticulitis

        Background/Aims: Single-institution studies showed that patients presented with more severe diverticulitis and underwent more emergency operations during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Therefore, we studied this trend using nationwide data from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database.Methods: Patients (n = 23,383) who underwent a colectomy for diverticulitis in 2018 (control year) and 2020 (pandemic year) were selected. We compared these groups for differences in disease severity, comorbidities, perioperative factors, and complications.Results: During the pandemic, colonic operations for diverticulitis decreased by 13.14%, but the rates of emergency operations (17.31% vs. 20.04%, <i>P</i>< 0.001) and cases with a known abscess/perforation (50.11% vs. 54.55%, <i>P</i>< 0.001) increased. Likewise, the prevalence of comorbidities, such as congestive heart failure, acute renal failure, systemic inflammatory response syndrome, and septic shock, were higher during the pandemic (<i>P</i>< 0.05). During this same period, significantly more patients were classified under American Society of Anesthesiologists classes 3, 4, and 5, suggesting their preoperative health states were more severe and life-threatening. Correspondingly, the average operation time was longer (<i>P</i>< 0.001) and complications, such as organ space surgical site infection, wound disruption, pneumonia, acute renal failure, septic shock, and myocardial infarction, increased (<i>P</i>< 0.05) during the pandemic.Conclusions: During the pandemic, surgical volume decreased, but the clinical presentation of diverticulitis became more severe. Due to resource reallocation and possibly patient fear of seeking medical attention, diverticulitis was likely underdiagnosed, and cases that would have been elective became emergent. This underscores the importance of monitoring patients at risk for diverticulitis and intervening when criteria for surgery are met.

      • The ethanol sensors made from α-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> decorated with multiwall carbon nanotubes

        Thin film ethanol sensors made from ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ decorated with multiwall carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs) were manufactured by the electron beam deposition method. The morphology of the decorated ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$/MWCNTs (25:1 weight ratios) nanocomposite powder was investigated using the scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. The thickness of thin films has been determined from ellipsometric measurements. The response of manufactured sensors was investigated at different temperatures of the sensor work body and concentration of gas vapors. Good response of prepared sensors to ethanol vapors already at work body temperature of $150^{\circ}C$ was shown.
