A Profile of the 11 Functions of ‘That’ Used in Story Writing by English Proficiency Groups

The single word ‘that’ has amazing utility because it offers 11 different functions. This study investigated the 11 functions of that which students used implicitly when writing stories. The participants were 4 proficiency groups: 2 Korean elementary-school immersion groups, Korean students in a gifted program (6th-9th grades), and American junior-high-school students. Occurrences of that in the stories were classified into 11 functions, ranked in accordance with mean occurrences, and grouped into 2 larger categories: high-frequency (easier) vs. low-frequency (more difficult) functions. That functioned most often as an object clause or demonstrative pronoun, and least as a subject clause or complement clause. The high-frequency functions were used most often in the stories of the gifted Korean youths, indicating their enthusiasm and fluency. Low-frequency functions occurred most often in the writings of the American junior-high-school students. Low-frequency functions showed a small and gradual increase in the use as students’ proficiency rose. This study enhances educators’ understanding of the use of that functions in relation to implicit knowledge as manifest in spontaneous discourse and proficiency levels.

Fabrication and characterization of polyaniline coated carbon nanofiber for supercapacitor

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Polyaniline coated carbon nanofiber was fabricated using one-step vapor deposition polymerization technique. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra and transmission electron microscope (TEM) images indicated that uniform and ultrathin conducting polymer layers were formed on the carbon nanofiber surfaces regardless of the coating thickness. It was also confirmed that the thickness of polyaniline layer could be conveniently tuned by the feeding amount of monomer. The coating thickness was dependent on initiator/monomer ratio, the vacuum pressure of reaction chamber and polymerization temperature. Among them, the vacuum pressure was a major factor to control the coating thickness of polyaniline onto the carbon nanofiber surface. In addition, the electrochemical analysis demonstrated that polyaniline coated carbon nanofiber showed an improved performance as supercapacitor. The specific capacitance of polyaniline coated carbon nanofiber exhibited a maximum value of 264F/g when the thickness of polyaniline layer was ca. 20nm.</P>
One-Step Vapor Deposition Polymerization for Polymer Encapsulated Inorganic Nanoparticles

We demonstrated VDP methodology as a new strategy to fabricate the various inorganic colloid-vinyl polymer core-shell nanostructures. This conceptually new and simple process allowed the formation of the highly uniform PMMA shells on the silica and titania nanoparticle surfaces. The shell thickness could be controlled from ca. 2.5 to 40 ㎚ with changing the monomer/inorganic particle weight ratio. In addition, carbon capsules derived from the silica-PDVB nanoparticles realized the encapsulation and selective release property of pyrene in a different enviro㎚ent and can be applied as a novel nanohybrid material in optical and electronic devices. This novel approach might be expanded to allow the preparation of the various core-shell structures, which include metallic, inorganic, and polymer materials.

<P>Silica−titania hollow nanoparticles (HNPs) with uniform diameters of 25, 50, 75, 100, and 125 nm were fabricated by dissolution and redeposition method in order to evaluate size dependent cellular response. Surface-modified HNPs with cationic, anionic, and neutral functional group were prepared by silane treatment. We systematically investigated cellular internalization, toxicity, and innate immune response of HNPs in human breast cancer (SK-BR-3) and mouse alveolar macrophage (J774A.1) cells. Size- and surface functionality-dependent cellular uptake of HNPs was investigated by fluorescence labeling (fluorescein isothiocyanate), inductively coupled plasma-emission spectroscopy, and ultrastructural resolution using transmission electron microscopy. Viability, reactive oxygen species, and apoptosis/necrosis of HNP-treated J774A.1 revealed the size-dependent phenomenon. Innate immune response of HNP-treated macrophages was measured by three cytokines such as interleukin-1, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor α. Among the HNPs of different sizes, 50-nm HNPs demonstrated the highest toxic influence on macrophages. Among the HNPs with surface functionalities, cationic HNPs demonstrated the most toxic effect on J774A.1 and the highest uptake efficiency. The toxicity results of HNP-treated macrophages were consistent with the cellular internalization efficiency. A 7-year-old intact female Shih-Tzu with chylothorax was presented. Percutaneous popliteal computedtomographic lymphangiography was performed to evaluate the thoracic duct and seek any potential cause of chylothorax. Despite two attempts, visualization of the thoracic duct failed and perianal subcutaneous computed tomographiclymphangiography with injection of iodinated, nonionic water-soluble contrast medium (0.6 ml/kg) was performed. Asingle branch of intact thoracic duct and dilated and tortuous lymphatics were detected. It was diagnosed as idiopathicchylothorax. Perianal subcutaneous lymphangiography is considered a less-invasive, easy and reliable method tovisualize lymphatics in patients with chylothorax.
