In order to differentiate the deficits of attention and cognitive function between schizophrenia and organic brain syndrome, the author tested simple visual reaction time and mini-mental state for 30 schizophrenics, 30 patients with organic brain syndrome and 30 controls who were matched for age and sex with the schizophrenic group. These patients hand been admitted to Neuropsychiatric ward of Chungnam National University Hospital and were selected by research criteria of Feighner et al. The data were statistically analysed and the results were obtained as follows. 1. Reaction time of the patients with organic brain syndrome was slower than that of the schizophrenics. And reaction time of the schizophrenics was slower than that of the controls. 2. The score of mini-mental state of the patients with organic brain syndrome was lower than that of the schizophrenics. And the score of mini-mental state of the schizophrenics was lower than that of the controls. 3. Both the organic brain syndrome and the control groups showed significant negative correlation between reaction time and score of mini-mental state but schizophrenic group didn't show the correlation.

This study was attempted to clarify the effects of the symptoms which determine the overall evel of disability after twelve months among various aspects of short-term prognosis in schizo phrenia. 100 Schizophrenic patients on Screening Schedule were applied Present State Examination, Psychological Impairment Rating Schedule, Scale for the Assessment of Negative symptoms and Diagnostic and Prognostic schedule. Overall level of disability after twelve months was classified in 3 groups as the group of improvement with less disability(56 patients), the group of no change(21 patients), and the group of deterioration with more disability(23 patients). To investigate differentiating components among 3 groups, the autlor selected 25 significant variables(p<0.005)with the X^2-test of independence and then tried factor analysis using SPSS/ PC+ based on the scores of each variable. The results of factor analysis were as follows. 1. In the group of improvement with less disability, 2 factors were extracted as lack of emotion factor and poverty of content of speech factor. In the group of no change, 3 factors were extracted as lack of emotion factor, lack of interest factor and poverty of content of speech factor. In the group of deterioration with more disability, 4 factors were extracted as lack of emotion and abnormal expression factor, lack of interpersonal relationship factor, lack of selfinterest factor and poverty of content of speech factor. 2. In the group of improvement with less disability, the contents of lack of emotion factor and poverty of content of speech factor were consistent with the contents of the factor extracted in the other 2 groups, but the severity of the symptoms was minimal and the symptoms of lack of interest or lack of interpersonal relationship were not revealed 3. In the group of no change, the contents of lack of emotion factor and poverty of content of speech factor were consistent with the contents of the factors extracted in the other 2 groups, but the severity of the symptoms was moderate and the contents of lack of interest was characteristic additional symptoms. 4. In the group of deterioration with more disability, the contents of lack emotion factor and poverty of content of speech factor were consistent with the contents of the factor extracted in the other 2 groups, but the severity of the symtoms was severe. The contents of lack of selfinterest factor were consistent with the contents of the factor extracted in the group of no change but the severity of the symptoms was severe. And the contents of lack of interpersonal relationship and abnormal expression were characteritsic additional symptoms.

In this study the effect of water extract of Viticis rotundifoliae Fructus(VRE) on the blood pressure of the rabbit was investigated. The results of the experiment are as follows. 1. VRE produced a fall of blood pressure, exhibiting dose-action curve in the rabbit. 2. The depressor effect of VRE was inhibited by atropine and chlorisondamine, potentiated by physostigmine, and then potentiated slightly by bethanidine. 3. Effect of VRE was not influenced by propranolol and cyproheptadin. The above results indicate that hypotension of VRE is produced by stimulation of parasympathetic nervous system induced centrally.

In order to investigate the effects of Coptis chenensis FRANCH(川黃連) extract solution on the blood pressure, experimental studies were performed on the blood pressure in normal rats, SHRs. The results were as follows. 1. Coptis chenensis FRANCH(川黃連) extract solution showed significantly effect of asing odecren the mean blood pressure in normal rats. 2. Coptis chenensis FRANCH(川黃連) extract solution showed significantly effect of decreasing on the systolic blood pressure in SHRs. 3. Coptis chenensis FRANCH(川黃連) extract solution was dilated on the isolated aorta in rabbits. 4. Coptis chenensis FRANCH(川黃連) extract solution showed significantly inhibitory effect of ACE in vitro. 5. The mechanism of the antihypertensive effect on Coptis chenensis FRANCH(川黃連) seems due to vasodilatation. According to the above results, it was recognized that Coptis chenensis FRANCH(川黃連) showed significantly antihypertensive effect in normal rats and SHRs. And the mechanism of the antihypertensive effect on Coptis chenensis FRANCH(川黃連) seems due to vasodilatation and ACE inhibition(in vitro).

Purpose: To retrospective analyze the type and frequency in ipsilateral knee ligament injury patient associated with the fracture of the femur. Materials and methods: from January 1998 to April 2002, the authors analyzed the patients who admitted Inje University Seoul Paik Hospital because of the fracture of the femur. The shaft fracture and subtrochanteric fracture were included in cases, but the fracture involved trochanter and the distal femur fracture were excluded from our cases. Their ages ranged from 10 to 80(average, 39). There were 47 males and 17 females. There were eleven subtrochanteric fracture and fifty three femur shaft fracture, we evaluated the cases by the physical exam, stress roentgenographic test and MRI at the time of initial visit, during fracture stabilization or during outpatient department follow-up, selectively. Result: The cases of the ipsilateral knee ligament injury associated with the femur fracture were 10 cases of the total 64 cases. There were one PCL injury of 11 subtrochanter fractures and 3 ACL injuries, 6 PCL injuries of 53 shaft fractures. There were 2 ligament injuries of 7 fractures between 11 and 20 years old. 5 of 19(26%) between 21 and 30.2 of 11(18%) between 31 and 40. There were no ligament injury associated with femur fracture below 10 and above 41 years old, the PCL injury associated with femur fracture occurred frequently than other ligament injuries, but it is not significant in the statistics. Colcusion: A high index of suspicion is needed for early diagnosis of ipsilateral knee cruciate ligament injury in a patient who has femur fracture.
Effects of the Chungshimbohyeol-tang on the Gene Expression in Atherosclerotic Lesions

The effects of the Chungshimbohyeol-tang on the expression of the MCP-1 and tissue factor genes which are important in the development of atherosclerotic lesions were investigated in the THP-1 human monocyte cell line using reverse transcription- polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Treatment of the THP-1 cells with LPS and the Chungshimbohyeol-tang for 18 hr decreased the expressions of both MCP-1 and tissue factor mRNA in a dose dependent manner. Since it has been reported that NF-kB and AP-1, nuclear transcription factors, are involved in the transcriptional regulation of the MCP-1 and tissue factor gene, effects of the Chungshimbohyeol-tang on the activities of NF-kB and AP-1 were examined using a transient transfection assay and electrophoretic mobility shift assay(EMSA). When the THP-1 cells were transiently transfected with the plasmid containing 3 copies of the NF-kB binding site and the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) gene, CAT activity was inhibited by the Chungshimbohyeol-tang. Treatment of the Chungshimbohyeol-tang inhibited protein/DNA binding of NF-kB to its cognate site as measured by EMSA. The Chungshimbohyeol-tang also inhibited AP-1 activation and its binding to DNA. Nuclear concentrations of NF-kB components and AP-1 proteins were also decreased by the treatment of the Chungshimbohyeol-tang. These results suggest that the Chungshimbohyeol-tang could prevent atherosclerosis through the down regulation of the MCP-1 and tissue factor gene expression which might be mediated by the inhibition of NF-kB and AP-1 activities and their binding to DNA.
