Fluctuation in the plasma needs to be measured for studying the improvement of the plasma confinement by the formation of the plasma confinement potential. A newly constructed multichannel microwave interferometer and ultrashort-pulse reflectometry were used for measuring the line integrated plasma density profile and density fluctuation profile in a few plasma shots. The first results of density and density fluctuation measurements in the central cell of the tandem mirror GAMMA 10 are described by using the multi-channel interferometer and ultrashort-pulse reflectometry.
Stable Haptic Display Based on Coupling Impedance for Internal and External Forces

This paper discusses haptic display for grasping a virtual object by two fingers. Much research has been done on fundamental analysis for stability of haptic display. But it is difficult to apply the results immediately to grasping situations by two fingers, since the studies usually deal with a single device and a single object and the fingertip force in grasping situations has two components, internal and external components. The conventional methods, which specify the coupling impedance at each contact point separately, have no other alternative but to specify the impedance for the sum of the internal and external components. So even if only the impedance for the external force should be changed, the impedance for the internal force is also changed at the same time. In this paper, a new method, in which the coupling impedance is specified separately for the internal and external forces, is proposed and the stability of the proposed method is discussed using passivity analysis for 1 -DOF(Degree-Of-Freedom) system. Finally, some experiments are performed to study the effects of the proposed method.
Development of a Portable Motor Vehicle for Personal Transportation

This paper presents a personal motor vehicle (PMV). The PMV has been developed under three design concepts. (1) It must be able to be used as a baggage and passenger conveyance system. (2) It must be lightweight and portable. (3) It must be easily controllable by the rider. The PMV consists of two wheels, a differential gear and a base. The speed of the PMV is controlled according to the foot pressure that is measured by two force sensors. Using the PMV, passenger riding and luggage conveyance experiments are conducted on flat and rough terrain, and the effectiveness of its mechanism and control system is confirmed.

The number of diabetes mellitus and borderline diabetes cases is increasing and poses a serious problem worldwide. Plants of the genus Salacia are known to have α-glucosidase inhibitory activity and to lower postprandial hyperglycemia. Two randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of Salacia chinensis extract. Study 1 was a single-dose crossover study of 150, 300, or 600 mg of Salacia extract or placebo to determine the dose dependency of the effect on postprandial hyperglycemia. The duration of the washout period between each experimental day was a minimum of 6 days. Study 2 was a 12-week, multiple-dose, parallel-group study to evaluate the effects of 600 mg/day of Salacia extract on blood glucose parameters. In Study 1, Salacia induced significant dose-dependent suppression of postprandial blood glucose, insulin, and their incremental area under the curve values. The dose of 600 mg appeared to have the most significant effect. In Study 2, Salacia significantly improved several blood glucose-related parameters, such as hemoglobin A1c, and glucose tolerance after glucose challenge. These results suggest that S. chinensis extract may have beneficial effects in patients with diabetes.

Ceramides (Cer) and glucosylceramides (GlcCer) play an important role in moisturizing the epidermis. Dietary GlcCer has been reported to improve transepidermal water loss (TEWL). However, the effect of GlcCer on epidermal Cer and GlcCer has not been well established. Therefore, we prepared a GlcCer-rich fraction (GCFr) from rice and evaluated its effect on TEWL and epidermal Cer and GlcCer in mice. In addition, we examined the effect of GlcCer (d18:2) contained in GCFr on the changes in Cer and GlcCer in a human epidermal equivalent. Oral dosing of GCFr (3 and 10 mg/[kg·day]) improved TEWL treated with sodium dodecyl sulfate. In the skin, epidermal Cer 1 was increased, and GlcCer (esterified ω-hydroxy fatty acid and sphingosine [EOS]) and a complex mixture of GlcCer (NS), (NP), and (C24,26-AS), known as GlcCer A/B were decreased by the GCFr. These changes were accompanied with the enhancement of glucosylceramide synthase (GCSase) and glucocerebrosidase expression. On the other hand, GlcCer (d18:2) increased Cer 1, Cer 2, GlcCer (EOS), and GlcCer A/B in a human epidermal equivalent accompanied with expression of GCSase and epidermal maturation markers. These results suggest that oral dosing of rice-derived GlcCer can compensate for epidermal loss of Cer by enhancing epidermal GlcCer metabolism. Rice-derived GlcCer may improve epidermal water loss and barrier function.
Tumor necrosis factor-α converting enzyme is a key mediator of abdominal aortic aneurysm development

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P><B>Objective</B></P><P>Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α is known to be elevated in plasma and the aorta in abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) patients. We sought to clarify the role of TNF-α converting enzyme (Tace), which cleaves the transmembrane precursor of TNF-α, in AAA development.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>We obtained aortic sample of AAA during surgical operation to assess the histological features and protein expression of human AAA. AAA was induced in mice with temporal systemic deletion of Tace by the inducible Mx-1 Cre transgene (TaceMx1) and in wild-type littermates (CON) by periaortic application of CaCl<SUB>2</SUB> (AAA/TaceMx1, AAA/CON).</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Tace expression was increased in human AAA samples as compared with normal aorta. Six weeks postoperatively, aortic diameter in AAA/TaceMx1 was decreased than in AAA/CON in association with attenuated TNF-α expression and extracellular matrix disruption. Increased activities of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 and MMP-2, numbers of Mac-2-positive macrophages, CD3-positive T lymphocytes and CD31-positive vessels in periaortic tissues, mRNA expression of CD68, monocyte chemotactic protein-1, TNF-α, vascular endothelial growth factor-A, p47 and glutathione peroxidases, and protein expression of phospho-c-Jun N-terminal kinase in AAA were all attenuated by Tace deletion. Protein expression of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 was upregulated by Tace deletion in sham-operated mice. TGF-β1 expression was further increased in AAA/TaceMx1.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Tace was overexpressed in the aortic wall in human and experimental AAA. Temporal systemic deletion of Tace prevented AAA development in association with attenuating inflammation, oxidative stress, neoangiogenesis and extracellular matrix disruption, suggesting a crucial role of Tace in AAA development.</P>
