      • Female Breast Cancer Incidence and Mortality in Mexico, 2000-2010

Anaya-Ruiz, Maricruz,Vallejo-Ruiz, Veronica,Flores-Mendoza, Lilian,Perez-Santos, Martin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.3

The objective of this study was to investigate the recent incidence and mortality trends for breast cancer in Mexican females. Data between 2000 and 2010 from the Department of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health, and International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) were analyzed. Age-standardized rates (ASRs) and annual percent changes (APCs) were calculated. The absolute incidence and mortality rates of breast cancer increased: 3,726 and 4,615 in 2000 to 8,545 and 4,966 in 2010, respectively. Incidence increased over time in all age groups tested, the 60-64 age group had the highest ASR (57.4 per 100,000 women in 2010), while the 20-44 age group had the lowest ASR (12.3 in 2010). The results show that incidence of breast cancer has increased in Mexico during last one decade, especially among older women, while the downturn observed in mortality mainly reflects improved survival as a result of earlier diagnosis and better cancer treatment.

Effect of Solidification Path and Contraction on the Cracking Susceptibility of Carbon Peritectic Steels

Martin Herrera Trejo,Eddy Alfaro Lopez,Jose Jorge Ruiz Mondragon,Manuel de Jesus Castro Roman,Hugo Solis Tovar 대한금속·재료학회 2010 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.16 No.5

The solidification path and contraction generated during the solidification of three carbon steels were studied. Two of the carbon steels were of hypo-peritectic chemical composition, with 0.11 % C and 0.15 % C, while one of the carbon steels were hyper-peritectic with 0.16 % C. The steels with 0.11 % C and 0.16 % C solidified as expected due to their chemical composition. In contrast, the chemically hypo-peritectic steel with 0.15 % C solidified as hyper-peritectic steel, which was associated with the microsegregation of Mn. For the steel exhibiting a hypo-peritectic solidification path, peritectic transformation occurred at solid fraction values higher than 0.9, where it was assumed that the contraction generated in the mushy shell cannot be fed by the liquid. However, for steels exhibiting a hyper-peritectic solidification path, peritectic transformation began at solid fraction values lower than 0.9, where the contraction generated by the peritectic transformation was partly fed by the liquid. Hence, the highest cracking susceptibility was associated with the hypo-peritectic solidification mode.

Conclusions: The above results show that global research in the field of gene therapy for breast cancer is increasing and the main participants in this field are USA and Canada in North America, China, Japan and South Korea in Asia, and England, Germany, and Italy in Europe. Also, this article demonstrates the usefulness of bibliometrics to address key evaluation questions and define future areas of research.

      • miR-153 Silencing Induces Apoptosis in the MDA-MB-231 Breast Cancer Cell Line

Anaya-Ruiz, Maricruz,Cebada, Jorge,Delgado-Lopez, Guadalupe,Sanchez-Vazquez, Maria Luisa,Perez-Santos, Jose Luis Martin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.5

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, non-coding RNAs (18-25 nucleotides) that post-transcriptionally modulate gene expression by negatively regulating the stability or translational efficiency of their target mRNAs. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the in vitro effects of miR-153 inhibition in the breast carcinoma cell line MDA-MB-231. Forty-eight hours after MDA-MB-231 cells were transfected with the miR-153 inhibitor, an MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay was utilized to determine the effects of miR-153 on cell viability. Flow cytometry analysis and assessment of caspase 3/7 activity were adopted to determine whether miR-153 affects the proliferation rates and apoptosis levels of MDA-MB-231 cells. Our results showed that silencing of miR-153 significantly inhibited growth when compared to controls at 48 hours, reducing proliferation by 37.6%, and inducing apoptosis. Further studies are necessary to corroborate our findings and examine the potential use of this microRNA in future diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.

      • miR-485 Acts as a Tumor Suppressor by Inhibiting Cell Growth and Migration in Breast Carcinoma T47D Cells

Anaya-Ruiz, Maricruz,Bandala, Cindy,Perez-Santos, Jose Luis Martin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.6

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, non-coding RNAs (18-25 nucleotides) that post-transcriptionally modulate gene expression by negatively regulating the stability or translational efficiency of their target mRNAs. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the in vitro effects of miR-485 mimics in breast carcinoma T47D cells. Forty-eight hours after T47D cells were transfected with miR-485 mimics, an MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay was utilized to determine the effects on cell viability. Colony formation and cell migration assays were adopted to determine whether miR-485 affects the proliferation rates and cell migration of breast carcinoma T47D cells. Our results showed that ectopic expression of miR-485 resulted in a significant decrease in cell growth, cell colony formation, and cell migration. These findings suggest that miR-485 might play an important role in breast cancer by suppressing cell proliferation and migration.

"Beach Lifeguards' Sun Exposure and Sun Protection in Spain"

de Troya Martin, Magdalena,Sanchez, Nuria Blazquez,Garcia Harana, Cristina,Leiva, Ma Carmen Alarcon,Arjona, Jose Aguilera,Ruiz, Francisco Rivas,de Galvez Aranda, Ma Victoria Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute 2021 Safety and health at work Vol.12 No.2

Background: Sunburn is the main avoidable cause of skin cancer. Beach lifeguards spend many hours exposed to the effects of solar radiation during their work day, precisely at times of the year when levels of solar irradiation are highest. The aim of this study is to quantify the risk to beach lifeguards of sun exposure. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in the Western Costa del Sol, southern Spain, during the summer of 2018. The research subjects were recruited during a skin cancer prevention course for beach lifeguards. All participants were invited to complete a questionnaire on their habits, attitudes, and knowledge related to sun exposure. In addition, ten were specially monitored using personal dosimeters for three consecutive days, and the results were recorded in a photoprotection diary. A descriptive analysis (mean and standard deviation for the quantitative variables) was performed, and inter-group differences were evaluated using the Mann-Whitney U test. Results: Two hundred fifteen lifeguards completed the questionnaire, and 109 met the criteria for inclusion in this analysis. The mean age was 23.8 years (SD: 5.1), 78.0% were male, 71.5% were phototype III or IV (Fitzpatrick's phototype), and 77.1% had experienced at least one painful sunburn during the previous summer. The mean daily personal ultraviolet exposure per day, the minimal erythema dose, and the standard erythema dose, in J/m2, were 634.7 [standard deviation (SD): 356.2], 2.5 (SD: 1.4) and 6.35 (SD: 3.6), respectively. Conclusion: Beach lifeguards receive very high doses of solar radiation during the work day and experience correspondingly high rates of sunburn. Intervention strategies to modify their sun exposure behavior and working environment are necessary to reduce the risk of skin cancer for these workers and to promote early diagnosis of the disease.

        G. Blazquez,M.A. Martin-Lara,E. Dionisio-Ruiz,G. Tenorio,M. Calero 한국공업화학회 2011 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.17 No.6

Olive stone (OS) and pine bark (PB) were used as effective biosorbents for the removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. The biosorbents were characterized by elemental analysis, potentiometric titrations, surface area and pore size distribution and FTIR analyses. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out as a function of pH, particle size, biosorbent dosage, contact time and initial copper concentration. Equilibrium data agreed well with Langmuir isotherm. The kinetics data fitted well into the pseudosecond-order model with correlation coefficient greater than 0.99. Finally, dynamic biosorption studies were carried out using a packed bed column and the main column parameters were determined.

      • Poster Session : PS 0153 ; Diabetes : Basal-Bolus Insulin Regimens and a Discharge-Strategy in Hospitalized Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Can Improve and Maintaining Control Glucemic During Several Years

( Pedro Reales Figueroa ),( Yasser Hessein Abdou ),( Maria Martin Toledano Lucas ),( Ibrahim Hamad ),( Adrian Ruiz Fernandez ),( Juan Velasco Franco ),( Marta Salas Cabanas ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

Aims: Current guidelines recommend the use of a basal-bolus insulin regimen in hospitalized patients with hyperglycemia or type 2 DM. In addition a simple strategy facilitating the reconciliation of medication on discharge can improve glycemic control post-discharge. With our study we want to test whether this better glycemic control is maintained over time. Methods: Our study is a prospective and observational study during routine clinical practice. It has been held in an Department of Internal Medicine during hospitalization, with follow-up visit at 3 months after discharge and followed up for 3 years. Study patients (30) were treated with a regimen of basal-bolus insulin during hospitalization and an adjustment of their antidiabetic treatment at discharge. As a control group we included patients(30) hospitalized with similar characteristics, treated with other regimen of insulin or oral antidiabetic agents and to which either no treatment adjustment is recommended at discharge. A follow-up to all patients at 3 months after discharge and again after 3 years I realize. Results: Comparing the study group with the control group we found no differences in baseline HbA1c (8,52%±0,81 vs 8,61%±0.72; p:0,652), age (67,7±3,76 vs 67,8±3,71; p:0,86), sex (16 male vs 17 mal) and BMI (30,33±1,62 Kg/m2 vs 30,41±1,63 Kg/m2). Compared with baseline, the HbA1c at 3 months after discharge is lowe r(7,51%±0.81 vs 8,52%±0,81;p:0,001) and 3 years after discharge also remains lower(7,81%±0,81vs8,52%±0,81; p:0,013). Compared with control subjects, patients included in study have lower HbA1c at 3 months after discharge (7,51%±0,81 vs 8,71% ± 0,81:p:0,004) and lower HbA1c at 3 years after discharge (7,81%±0,81 vs 8,91%±0,81; p:0,002). Conclusion: This study confi rm that protocols to manage hyperglycemia with basal-bolus insulin regimens are also feasible and effective in routine clinical practice, and demonstrate that a simple strategy facilitating the reconciliation of medication on discharge can improve glycemic control post-discharge, that remains after 3 years or follow.
