Application of Analytic Hierarchy Process for the Selection of Cotton Fibers

Majumdar Abhijit,Sarkar Bijan,Majumdar Prabal Kumar The Korean Fiber Society 2004 Fibers and polymers Vol.5 No.4

In many engineering applications, the final decision is based on the evaluation of a number of alternatives in terms of a number of criteria. This problem may become very intricate when the selection criteria are expressed in terms of different units or the pertinent data are difficult to be quantified. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is an effective way in dealing with such kind of complicated problems. Cotton fiber is selected or graded, in the spinning industries, based on several quality criteria. However, the existing selection or grading method based on Fiber quality Index (FqI) is rather crude and ambiguous. This paper presents a novel approach of cotton fiber selection using the AHP methodology of Multi Criteria Decision Making.

The birth professionals : Emerging practices of birthing in contemporary India

        Sreya Majumdar,Anindita Majumdar 이화여자대학교 한국여성연구원 2021 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.27 No.4

In this paper, we define what we understand by birth professionals and examine how they have emerged in India in response to existing obstetric and gynecological practices. The focus here is on the emerging category of the “birth professional,” as we look back into how professional midwifery, doulas, childbirth educators and lactation consultants have come to define “newer” birthing options for women, with the corresponding decline of traditional midwifery in India. Finally, the paper uses ethnographic field data on professional midwives and doulas, to define what birth professionalism represents in India through case studies.

Damage assessment of beams from changes in natural frequencies using ant colony optimization

        Majumdar, Aditi,De, Ambar,Maity, Damodar,Maiti, Dipak Kumar Techno-Press 2013 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.45 No.3

A numerical method is presented here to detect and assess structural damages from changes in natural frequencies using Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm. It is possible to formulate the inverse problem in terms of optimization and then to utilize a solution technique employing ACO to assess the damage/damages of structures using natural frequencies. The laboratory tested data has been used to verify the proposed algorithm. The study indicates the potentiality of the developed code to solve a wide range of inverse identification problems in a systematic manner. The developed code is used to assess damages of beam like structures using a first few natural frequencies. The outcomes of the simulated results show that the developed method can detect and estimate the amount of damages with satisfactory precision.

IoT for Promoting Agriculture 4.0: a Review from the Perspective of Weather Monitoring, Yield Prediction, Security of WSN Protocols, and Hardware Cost Analysis

        Majumdar Parijata,Mitra Sanjoy,Bhattacharya Diptendu 한국농업기계학회 2021 바이오시스템공학 Vol.46 No.4

Purpose The main focus is to concisely cover contemporary methods of IoT-oriented agriculture automation using weather monitoring. In this article, IoT components, communication protocols, data analysis and prediction methods are studied to reveal scientific and commercial perspectives like security vulnerabilities of communication protocols, cost of IoT hardware, data repository comparison, and dependency analysis of weather parameters. Reasons for striving towards Agriculture 4.0 are discussed to outline challenges for researchers to adjust irrigation schedules as per non-linear weather changes for developing an economically viable, real-time monitoring method. Methods Weather monitoring using IoT technologies for data processing and storage are extensively surveyed. Besides, we also reviewed how these approaches are enhanced using Agriculture 4.0 for different crops. Results Extensive survey reveals shortcomings of existing approaches and shows that temperature and humidity are most commonly monitored in IoT technologies. Cost analysis shows minimum cost incurred for hardware is 1–10$ for machine learning and edge computing and 10–20$ for cloud computing. Conclusions Cost analysis helps to identify cheaper sensors and micro-controllers for prediction of weather changes. Weather parameters that were given least importance in existing literature needs consideration to understand how its non-linearity impacts the accuracy of irrigation schedule prediction to maximize soil fertility and crop yield.

New evidences of neurotoxicity of aroclor 1254 in mice brain: potential of coenzyme q10 in abating the detrimental outcomes

Majumdar, Anuradha,Nirwane, Abhijit,Kamble, Rahul The Korean Society of Environmental Toxicology 2014 환경독성보건학회지 Vol.29 No.-

Objectives The present subacute study was designed to evaluate the effect of coenzyme Q 10 (CoQ10) in the 28 days aroclor 1254 exposure induced oxidative stress in mice brain. Methods Biochemical estimations of brain lipid peroxidation (LPO), reduced glutathione (GSH), and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and acetyl cholinesterase (AChE), and histopathological investigations of brain tissue were carried out. Results Oral exposure of aroclor 1254 (5 mg/kg) led to significant decrease in levels of GSH, and activities of SOD, CAT, GPx, and AChE, and increase in LPO. These aberrations were restored by CoQ10 (10 mg/kg, intraperitoneal injection [IP]). This protection offered was comparable to that of L-deprenyl (1 mg/kg, IP) which served as a reference standard. Conclusions Aroclor 1254 exposure hampers the activities of various antioxidant enzymes and induces oxidative stress in the brains of Swiss albino mice. Supplementation of CoQ10 abrogates these deleterious effects of aroclor 1254. CoQ10 also apparently enhanced acetyl cholinesterase activity which reflects its influence on the cholinergic system.

      • Climate change mitigation information disclosure of oil & gas sector in India: A perception analysis

        Majumdar, Kishore Kanti,Arora, Suneel,Pahuja, Shuchi Techno-Press 2021 Advances in environmental research Vol.10 No.2

Greenhouse gas (GHG) information of business activities disclosed in corporate annual reports lack consistency in content due to variability of perceptions on environmental issues among company executives. Prior studies examined factors affecting environmental disclosures by comparing different firm characteristics, but no reference of executives' perceptions on climate change disclosures was identified in the existing literature. This study aimed at investigating perceptions of executives from 26 listed oil and gas (O&G) companies on climate change mitigation (CCM) information disclosures in annual reports. A questionnaire was constructed referring to the sustainability reporting framework of International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association (IPIECA) to receive responses from executives of the sample O&G companies. The study revealed that the executives of O&G companies across different value chains perceived materiality for disclosure for all the four climate change indicators- GHG emission, energy use, renewable energy, and flared gases. Significant differences in mean scores of CCM information disclosures existed within four groups of executives holding different positions as well as executives who had different levels of knowledge about annual reports. This study puts forward that climate change mitigation disclosures in annual reports gets affected by level of positions held by executives in their respective companies and their level of knowledge of annual report.
