Application of Analytic Hierarchy Process for the Selection of Cotton Fibers

Majumdar Abhijit,Sarkar Bijan,Majumdar Prabal Kumar The Korean Fiber Society 2004 Fibers and polymers Vol.5 No.4

In many engineering applications, the final decision is based on the evaluation of a number of alternatives in terms of a number of criteria. This problem may become very intricate when the selection criteria are expressed in terms of different units or the pertinent data are difficult to be quantified. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is an effective way in dealing with such kind of complicated problems. Cotton fiber is selected or graded, in the spinning industries, based on several quality criteria. However, the existing selection or grading method based on Fiber quality Index (FqI) is rather crude and ambiguous. This paper presents a novel approach of cotton fiber selection using the AHP methodology of Multi Criteria Decision Making.

Neurobehavioural Changes and Brain Oxidative Stress Induced by Acute Exposure to GSM900 Mobile Phone Radiations in Zebrafish (Danio rerio)

        Abhijit Nirwane,Vinay Sridhar,Anuradha Majumdar 한국독성학회 2016 Toxicological Research Vol.32 No.2

The impact of mobile phone (MP) radiation on the brain is of specific interest to the scientific community and warrants investigations, as MP is held close to the head. Studies on humans and rodents revealed hazards MP radiation associated such as brain tumors, impairment in cognition, hearing etc. Melatonin (MT) is an important modulator of CNS functioning and is a neural antioxidant hormone. Zebrafish has emerged as a popular model organism for CNS studies. Herein, we evaluated the impact of GSM900MP (GSM900MP) radiation exposure daily for 1 hr for 14 days with the SAR of 1.34W/Kg on neurobehavioral and oxidative stress parameters in zebrafish. Our study revealed that, GSM900MP radiation exposure, significantly decreased time spent near social stimulus zone and increased total distance travelled, in social interaction test. In the novel tank dive test, the GSM900MP radiation exposure elicited anxiety as revealed by significantly increased time spent in bottom half; freezing bouts and duration and decreased distance travelled, average velocity, and number of entries to upper half of the tank. Exposed zebrafish spent less time in the novel arm of the Y-Maze, corroborating significant impairment in learning as compared to the control group. Exposure decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) activities whereas, increased levels of reduced glutathione (GSH) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) was encountered showing compromised antioxidant defense. Treatment with MT significantly reversed the above neurobehavioral and oxidative derangements induced by GSM900MP radiation exposure. This study traced GSM900MP radiation exposure induced neurobehavioral aberrations and alterations in brain oxidative status. Furthermore, MT proved to be a promising therapeutic candidate in ameliorating such outcomes in zebrafish.

New evidences of neurotoxicity of aroclor 1254 in mice brain: potential of coenzyme q10 in abating the detrimental outcomes

Majumdar, Anuradha,Nirwane, Abhijit,Kamble, Rahul The Korean Society of Environmental Toxicology 2014 환경독성보건학회지 Vol.29 No.-

Objectives The present subacute study was designed to evaluate the effect of coenzyme Q 10 (CoQ10) in the 28 days aroclor 1254 exposure induced oxidative stress in mice brain. Methods Biochemical estimations of brain lipid peroxidation (LPO), reduced glutathione (GSH), and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and acetyl cholinesterase (AChE), and histopathological investigations of brain tissue were carried out. Results Oral exposure of aroclor 1254 (5 mg/kg) led to significant decrease in levels of GSH, and activities of SOD, CAT, GPx, and AChE, and increase in LPO. These aberrations were restored by CoQ10 (10 mg/kg, intraperitoneal injection [IP]). This protection offered was comparable to that of L-deprenyl (1 mg/kg, IP) which served as a reference standard. Conclusions Aroclor 1254 exposure hampers the activities of various antioxidant enzymes and induces oxidative stress in the brains of Swiss albino mice. Supplementation of CoQ10 abrogates these deleterious effects of aroclor 1254. CoQ10 also apparently enhanced acetyl cholinesterase activity which reflects its influence on the cholinergic system.

Leveraging the Antibacterial Properties of Knitted Fabrics by Admixture of Polyester-Silver Nanocomposite Fibres

        Prakash Khude,Abhijit Majumdar,Bhupendra Singh Butola 한국섬유공학회 2018 Fibers and polymers Vol.19 No.7

Leveraging the antibacterial properties of polyester-cotton knitted fabrics has been attempted in this research by admixture of small proportion of polyester-silver nanocomposite fibres. Polyester-cotton (50:50) yarns were spun by mixing 10, 20 and 30 % (wt.%) polyester-silver nanocomposite fibres with normal polyester fibres so that overall proportion of polyester fibre becomes 50 %. The proportion of cotton fibre was constant (50 %) in all the yarns. Three parameters, namely blend proportion (wt.%) of nanocomposite fibres, yarn count and knitting machine gauge were varied, each at three levels, for producing 27 knitted fabrics. Polyester-cotton knitted fabrics prepared from polyester-silver nanocomposite fibres showed equally good antibacterial activity (65-99 %) against both S. aureus and E. coli bacteria. Antibacterial properties were enhanced with the increase in the proportion of polyester-silver nanocomposite fibres, yarn coarseness and increased compactness of knitted fabrics. Yarn count and blend proportion of nanocomposite fibre were found to have very dominant influence in determining the antibacterial properties of knitted fabrics.

Comparative Study of P-aramid Based Soft and Stiff Composite Panels for Protective Application

        Rupayan Roy,Abhijit Majumdar,Bhupendra Singh Butola 한국섬유공학회 2019 Fibers and polymers Vol.20 No.2

In this research work, the authors investigated the impact behaviour of Kevlar based flexible and stiff composites. These composites were prepared by using natural rubber latex (NR) and epoxy resin respectively as matrix and p-aramid (Kevlar 129) fabric as reinforcement. For flexible composites, the ratio of reinforcement and matrix was 90:10, and for stiff composites, the ratio was 40:60. In both the cases, two layers of Kevlar fabric were used. Stitched fabric panels consisting of two layers of Kevlar were used as control. It was observed that the flexible composites exhibited 2.8 times higher puncture force whereas for stiff composites the value was 6.6 times in comparison to only stitched panels. In terms of impact energy absorption, flexible composites showed 73 % higher value as compared to the stitched panels whereas for stiff composites, 86 % reduction was witnessed.

Graphene Reinforced Multiphase Shear Thickening Fluid for Augmenting Low Velocity Ballistic Resistance

        Unsanhame Mawkhlieng,Abhijit Majumdar,Debarati Bhattacharjee 한국섬유공학회 2021 Fibers and polymers Vol.22 No.1

The impact resistance of panels made from p-aramid (Kevlar®) fabrics was improved by treating them withmultiphase shear thickening fluids (STF) containing only 0.2 %, 0.4 % and 0.6 % graphene nanoplatelets. The multiphaseSTFs showed enhanced peak viscosity than their pure counterpart, signifying better shear thickening. The yarn pull-out forceincreased (25 %) in multiphase STF treated fabrics as compared to that of pure STF treated fabrics. The dynamic impactresistance also improved (6.5 % to 19.7 %) in multiphase STF treated fabrics. Finally, multiphase STF treated fabric panelsdemonstrated superior ballistic resistance, against low velocity ballistic impact (165±10 m/s) in terms of either energyabsorption or number of bullets stopped.

Tuning the Frictional Properties of Carbon Fabrics Using Boron Carbide Particles

Selim Gürgen,Abhijit Majumdar 한국섬유공학회 2019 Fibers and polymers Vol.20 No.4

In recent years, researches have made many efforts to improve the frictional properties of high performance fabricsby using different methods such as applying natural rubber latex, developing metal oxide nano-rods and treating with shearthickening fluids. Even though these methods have provided beneficial results for enhanced frictional behavior, they exhibitsome drawbacks in terms of flexibility, stability and ease of application. For this reason, an attempt has been made in thisresearch to tune the frictional properties of carbon fabric through a simple process such as coating the fabric with boroncarbide particles in polyethylene glycol medium. The surface friction as well as yarn-to-yarn friction were evaluated and itwas found that the presence of only polyethylene glycol (PEG) or the mixture of PEG/boron carbide enhances the surfacefriction and yarn-to-yarn friction in the fabric. In addition, the role of boron carbide concentration used in the treatmentprocess was investigated. It was found that the friction in carbon fabric can be controlled by altering the amount of boroncarbide particles used in the treatment process.

Multi-objective Optimisation of Antibacterial Activity and Comfort of Knitted Fabrics Made from Polyester-Silver Nanocomposite Fibres

        Prakash Khude,Abhijit Majumdar,Bhupendra Singh Butola,Rajib Bhattacharyya 한국섬유공학회 2023 Fibers and polymers Vol.24 No.9

Textile materials have long been recognised as media supporting the growth of microorganisms. For various applications including sports apparel, textile materials should have an optimum level of antibacterial activity without deteriorating the clothing comfort. This study deals with the multi-objective optimisation of antibacterial activity and comfort of knitted fabrics made from polyester-silver nanocomposite fibres using the desirability function approach. Comfort properties such as air permeability and moisture vapour transmission along with antibacterial activity have been considered to determine the ‘overall desirability’. Blend proportion of the polyester-silver nanocomposite fibre (%), yarn count (Ne), knitting machine gauge (inch-1) and type of fabric (100% polyester or polyester-cotton blend) have been considered as the four independent variables. The optimum desirability was found to be 0.64 which is acceptable. To validate the results of optimisation, a new fabric sample was prepared with the optimum combination of input parameters. The validation sample showed good agreement with the optimised values of antibacterial activity and comfort properties.
