        Effect of Babassu Mesocarp As a Food Supplement During Resistance Training

        The population widely uses babassu mesocarp (Attalea speciosa) as food and medicine. This study evaluated the use of babassu mesocarp as a food supplement during resistance training (RT). Male Swiss mice, 60 days old (weight 35–40 g), were divided into four groups (n = 8): control, untreated and untrained; babassu (babassu aqueous extract [BAE]), treated orally with aqueous extract of babassu mesocarp (25 mg/kg), five times a week, for 8 weeks; training (RT), submitted to RT consisting of stair climbing with progressive loads; and resistance training treated with babassu aqueous extract (RTBAE): RT and treatment with BAE. After 8 weeks, we analyzed the biochemistry of serum, the immunological, and histological parameters. The RT group showed maximum strength after the second week. A reduction in body weight, retroperitoneal and interstitial fat deposits, and activated helper T lymphocytes (TCD4+ CD69+) occurred in RT and RTBAE groups. The RTBAE group showed increased levels of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and macrophage and helper T lymphocyte count, whereas a reduction occurred in triglyceride levels and the total number of lymphocytes. Supplementation with BAE always reduced cholesterol and the population of activated macrophages but increased activated B lymphocytes and interleukin-6 levels. The combination of supplementation and RT resulted in a decreased production of tumor necrosis factor-α. We propose the use of babassu mesocarp as a food supplement during exercise because of its immunomodulatory effect on lymphocyte and macrophage populations and cytokine production. The additional impact on the control of cholesterol and triglyceride levels suggests its use, particularly for the treatment of dyslipidemias.

        Mass Separation and in vitro Immunological Activity of Membranefractionated Polysaccharides from Fruiting Body and Mycelium of Agaricus subrufescens

        Membrane technology has been applied to separate polysaccharides from Agaricus subrufescens (ASPs). The membrane-retained fractions and unfractionated preparations have been tested for in vitro immunological activity. Both the microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF1) membranes were able to separate high-molecular weight polysaccharides from fruiting body (ASP-FB) and submerge-fermented mycelium (ASP-SmF) extracts. All fractions showed immunostimulatory effects on RAW 264.7macrophages, measured by TNF-α, iNOs gene expression,and NO production. In contrast, antibody and proliferation levels in B lymphoblastoid SKW 6.4 cells were significantly increased after treatment with ASP-FB, but did not with ASP-SmF preparations. The ASPs- and LPS-induced stimulation could be differentiated by the finding that polymyxin B, a specific inhibitor of LPS, did not significantly affect the immunoactivating response and proliferation activity of ASPs on macrophages and B cells, respectively. Furthermore, the ASP-FB treatment was unable to induce IL-6 production by B cells unlike LPS activation, sustaining distinct signaling pathways for ASP-FB and LPS. The overall results provided additional information about the action of ASPs on the immune system and support the membrane method to separate and concentrate highmolecular weight ASPs for immunopharmacological and biotechnological applications.

        Systemic and local effects of doxycycline and low-intensity laser treatment on periodontitis in rats

        Purpose: This study evaluated the systemic and local effects of doxycycline (DOX) and lowintensity laser (LIL) treatment as adjuvants to scaling and root planing (SRP) in the treatment of experimental periodontitis in rats. Methods: The sample consisted of 180 male rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus, Wistar), of which 30 did not receive induction of periodontal disease (negative control [NC] group) and 150 received induction of periodontal disease in the lower first molar. After 7 days, the ligature was removed, and the animals were divided into the following groups: NT (no treatment), SRP (SRP), DOX (SRP and DOX irrigation), LIL (SRP and laser irradiation), and DOX+LIL (SRP, DOX, and LIL). The animals were euthanized at 7, 15, and 30 days; thereafter, biochemical, radiographic, histological, and immunohistochemical analyses were performed. Results: In the intragroup analysis, lower concentrations of α-1-glycoprotein acid (α-1-Ga) and complement 3 (C3) were observed in the DOX+LIL group than in all other groups at all time points, as well as lower levels of complement 4 (C4) at 15 and 30 days (P<0.001). Less bone loss was observed in the DOX, LIL, and DOX+LIL groups than in the NC and SRP groups at all time points (P<0.001). There was a smaller number of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP)-positive cells in the DOX+LIL group than in the other groups at all time points (P<0.001). Positive correlations were observed between the systemic levels of α-1-Ga, C3, and C4 and the number of TRAP-positive cells. Conclusions: The combination of DOX with LIL as SRP adjuvants was effective both systemically and locally for the treatment of experimental periodontitis in rats.

        The Public Housing and Residential Differentiations

        China is stilling still facing high speed of urbanization and an increasing gap between high housing prices and relative low family incomes especially for the poor household. The public housing projects that are expected to provide the equality accessibility to good condition housing are encouraged, rapidly planned and built since 2010. Wuhan is the earliest city in China that began to provide public housings. Around 12 million square meters affordable housings were built during the period from 1994 to 2009. Providing public and affordable housing is considered as the processes that ‘pursued social reforms’ and solve the problems of social equity in distribution of resources, opportunities and change the living condition of the people on poverty. However, the efficiency of afford housing in decreasing residential segregation is controversial. The author summary 79 public housing projects completed in the year of 2013 and 2014 in Wuhan, their location, size, accessibility to the commercial centers and schools are discussed. We concluded that the most of public housing projects only changed the geography of poverty and displaced poor people into the new concentrated areas. The spatial concentration of large-scale public housing and long distance from social services and facilities are two main reasons lead to escape of middle-income families and, residential differences and segregation of poor people. The families with low income also face the problem in choosing location of their houses because of the large scale housing projects limited the variety housing locations within a certain period of validity of house buying qualifications.

        The Environmental Justice in Ecological Immigration A Case Study of Sanjiangyuan Area

        Recently, there is an increasing criticism both inside and outside China toward the eco-migration projects. The author focuses on the eco-migration of Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve as a case study as it is one of the main eco-migration projects. At the end of 2010, government invested 4.47 billion CNY in eco-migration and relocated the immigration 55773 people in 10733 units. Benefits of eco-migration is obvious, however, it needs to be recognized that in the aspect of environment justice, it is unfair to sacrifice a group of people in the process of environmental protection because costs and benefits result from the environmental protection have to share among the people without discrimination. Local herdsmen received extra disadvantages in their level of material possessions, social and cultural values and the social inclusion after eco-migration project. As a part of the eco-social system established within several centuries, the local herdsmen are not only threateners to local ecology system, but also the guardians to the natural environment through religion and habits last for generations. The social and cultural values, traditional religion and Nomadic living habits, as important as the environment, are need to be cherished and protected.

        Anxiolytic-Like Effects of Chrysanthemum indicum Aqueous Extract in Mice: Possible Involvement of GABAA Receptors and 5-HT1A Receptors

        Chrysanthemum indicum Linne is an ancient herbal medicine used to treat bone and muscle deterioration, ocular infl ammation, headache, and anxiety in Korea, China, and Japan. Furthermore, tea derived from Chrysanthemum indicum Linne has been used to treat anxiety by facilitating relaxation and curing insomnia. However, no reports exist on the anxiolytic-like effects of Chrysanthemum indicum Linne water extract (CWE) in mice. In the present study, we investigated the anxiolytic-like effects of CWE using the elevated plus-maze (EPM) test in mice. CWE, at a dose of 500 mg/kg (p.o.), signifi cantly increased the time spent in the open arms of the EPM compared to a vehicle-injected control group. Moreover, the effect of CWE (500 mg/kg) was blocked by bicuculline (a selective GABAA receptor antagonist) and WAY 100635 (a selective 5-HT1A receptor antagonist). Taken together, these fi ndings suggest that the anxiolytic-like effects of CWE might be mediated by the GABAA receptor and the 5-HT1A receptor.

        Association analysis and population structure of flowering-related traits in super sweet corn inbred lines with simple sequence repeat markers

        <P>This study assessed the genetic and phenotypic variation of 90 super sweet corn inbred lines and performed association analyses of six agronomical traits using 100 simple sequence repeats (SSR), ultimately detecting 590 alleles, with an average of 5.90 alleles per locus. The average genetic diversity and Polymorphism information content values were 0.54 and 0.50, respectively. Using population structure analysis, inbred lines were divided into three major groups and one admixed group. Association analysis was performed with a general linear model using a Q-matrix (Q GLM) and a mixed linear model using Q and K-matrices (Q + K MLM). Q GLM found 33 marker-trait associations involving 20 SSR markers that were associated with six agronomic traits. Q + K MLM identified four marker-trait associations involving three markers that were associated with traits of days of tasseling (DT) and days of silking (DS). Q GLM and Q + K MLM detected four significant marker-trait associations (SMTAs), with a level of significance of P < 0.01. In overlapping SMTAs, phi051 was associated with DT, umc1708 was associated with DS, and umc2341 was associated with two traits: DT and DS. The detection of loci associated with traits in this study may provide greater opportunities to improve quality by marker-assisted selection (MAS). Finally, these results will be helpful for breeders in choosing parental lines for crossing combinations as well as markers for using MAS in super sweet corn breeding programs in Korea.</P>
