Anisotropic Magnetization and Charge Density Wave in a Na0.78CoO2 Single Crystal

        이종수,J. B. Peng,S. M. Lee,C. T. Lin 한국물리학회 2008 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.52 No.2

Single crystals of γ-Na0.78CoO2 were grown using the floating zone method. The static magnetic susceptibility M/H(T) of Na0.78CoO2 showed significant anisotropic behavior for different crystal orientations of H ∥ (ab) and H ∥ (c). While (M/H)ab(T) for a magnetic field H= 1 T in an ab-plane followed the Curie-Weiss law at high temperatures (T ≥ 100 K), (M/H)c(T) for H ∥ c-axis deviated from Curie-Weiss behavior, which may be understood by using phonon localization from strong electron-phonon coupling. The impurity spin-1/2 effect, dressed by spin fluctuation, was significant at low temperatures (T ≤ 30 K) for both field orientations of H ∥ (ab) and H ∥ (c). The electrical resistivity ρ(T) of Na0.78CoO2 showed a clear metallic character down to 16 K, with a weak increase in the resistivity ρ(T) at low temperatures T ≤ 16 K). The gap-like behavior of ρ(T) was insensitive to applied magnetic fields up to 7 T, which indicates a non-degenerate charge gap. The electrical conductivity σ(T) followed the density wave behavior with a small energy gap (0.64 meV) at low temperatures. We discussed the electrical resistivity ρ(T)$ and the anisotropic M/H(T) behavior of Na0.78CoO2 in terms of the charge density wave and a strong electron-phonon interaction. THE TAIWANESE-AMERICAN OCCULTATION SURVEY PROJECT STELLAR VARIABILITY. II. DETECTION OF 15 VARIABLE STARS

        Mondal, S.,Lin, C. C.,Chen, W. P.,Zhang, Z.-W.,Alcock, C.,Axelrod, T.,Bianco, F. B.,Byun, Y.-I.,Coehlo, N. K.,Cook, K. H.,Dave, R.,Kim, D.-W.,King, S.-K.,Lee, T.,Lehner, M. J.,Lin, H.-C.,Marshall, S. American Institute of Physics 2010 The Astronomical journal Vol.139 No.5

<P>The Taiwanese-American Occultation Survey (TAOS) project has collected more than a billion photometric measurements since 2005 January. These sky survey data—covering timescales from a fraction of a second to a few hundred days—are a useful source to study stellar variability. A total of 167 star fields, mostly along the ecliptic plane, have been selected for photometric monitoring with the TAOS telescopes. This paper presents our initial analysis of a search for periodic variable stars from the time-series TAOS data on one particular TAOS field, No. 151 (R.A. = 17h30m6<img entity='fs' SRC='http://ej.iop.org/icons/Entities/fs.gif' ALT='fs' ALIGN='BASELINE' />7, decl. = 27°17'30'', J2000), which had been observed over 47 epochs in 2005. A total of 81 candidate variables are identified in the 3 deg2 field, with magnitudes in the range 8 < R < 16. On the basis of the periodicity and shape of the light curves, 29 variables, 15 of which were previously unknown, are classified as RR Lyrae, Cepheid, δ Scuti, SX Phonencis, semi-regular, and eclipsing binaries.</P>

Optical Investigations of Non-polar m-plane InGaN/GaN Multiple Quantum Wells Grown on LiAlO2 (100) by Using MOVPE

        D. R. Hang,Mitch M. C. Chou,J. L. Lin,M. Heuken 한국물리학회 2009 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.55 No.1

We investigate the optical properties of m-plane InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) grown on LiAlO2 substrates by using metal organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE). Polarizationdependent photoluminescence (PL) measurements have been employed to study the optical emission characteristics. We demonstrate that the PL emission has a large polarization anisotropy, which can be attributed to the anisotropic in-plane strain. The degree of polarization is studied as a function of temperature, and the dependence can be explained by using the modified band structure model. The energy splitting of the two uppermost valence bands is obtained from polarized PL spectroscopy and is in good agreement with the activation energy deduced from the Arrhenius relationship. From the excitation-dependent PL measurements, we found the optical emission not to be influenced by the polarization-induced electric field. Our results are important for the design and the fabrication of non-polar InGaN/GaN MQW polarization-sensitive optical devices We investigate the optical properties of m-plane InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) grown on LiAlO2 substrates by using metal organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE). SEARCHES FOR MILLISECOND PULSAR CANDIDATES AMONG THE UNIDENTIFIED<i>FERMI</i>OBJECTS

        Hui, C. Y.,Park, S. M.,Hu, C. P.,Lin, L. C. C.,Li, K. L.,Kong, A. K. H.,Tam, P. H. T.,Takata, J.,Cheng, K. S.,Jin, Ruolan,Yen, T.-C.,Kim, Chunglee IOP Publishing 2015 The Astrophysical journal Vol.809 No.1

<P>Here we report the results of searching millisecond pulsar (MSP) candidates from the Fermi LAT second source catalog (2FGL). Seven unassociated gamma-ray sources in this catalog are identified as promising MSP candidates based on their gamma-ray properties. Through the X-ray analysis, we have detected possible X-ray counterparts, localized to an arcsecond accuracy. We have systematically estimated their X-ray fluxes and compared them with the corresponding gamma-ray fluxes. The X-ray to gamma-ray flux ratios for 2FGL J1653.6-0159 and 2FGL J1946.4-5402 are comparable with the typical value for pulsars. For 2FGL J1625.2-0020, 2FGL J1653.6-0159, and 2FGL J1946.4-5402, their candidate X-ray counterparts are bright enough to perform a detailed spectral and temporal analysis to discriminate their thermal/non-thermal nature and search for the periodic signal. We have also searched for possible optical/IR counterparts at the X-ray positions. For the optical/IR source coincident with the brightest X-ray object associated with 2FGL J1120.0-2204, its spectral energy distribution is comparable with a late-type star. Evidence for the variability has also been found by examining its optical light curve. All the aforementioned 2FGL sources resemble a pulsar in one or more aspects, making them promising targets for follow-up investigations.</P>

      • DISCOVERY OF AN ULTRACOMPACT GAMMA-RAY MILLISECOND PULSAR BINARY CANDIDATE

        Kong, Albert K. H.,Jin, Ruolan,Yen, T.-C.,Hu, C.-P.,Hui, C. Y.,Tam, P. H. T.,Takata, J.,Lin, L. C. C.,Cheng, K. S.,Park, S. M.,Kim, C. L. IOP Publishing 2014 ASTROPHYSICAL JOURNAL LETTERS - Vol.794 No.2

<P>We report multi-wavelength observations of the unidentified Fermi object 2FGL J1653.6-0159. With the help of high-resolution X-ray observations, we have identified an X-ray and optical counterpart to 2FGL J1653.6-0159. The source exhibits a periodic modulation of 75 minutes in the optical and possibly also in the X-ray. We suggest that 2FGL J1653.6-0159 is a compact binary system with an orbital period of 75 minutes. Combining the gamma-ray and X-ray properties, 2FGL J1653.6-0159 is potentially a black-widow-/redback-type gamma-ray millisecond pulsar (MSP). The optical and X-ray light curve profiles show that the companion is mildly heated by the high-energy emission and that the X-rays are from intrabinary shock. Although no radio pulsation has yet been detected, we estimated that the spin period of the MSP is similar to 2 ms based on a theoretical model. If pulsation can be confirmed in the future, 2FGL J1653.6-0159 will become the first ultracompact rotation-powered MSP.</P>

      • EXPLORING THE X-RAY AND gamma-RAY PROPERTIES OF THE REDBACK MILLISECOND PULSAR PSR J1723-2837

        Hui, C. Y.,Tam, P. H. T.,Takata, J.,Kong, A. K. H.,Cheng, K. S.,Wu, J. H. K.,Lin, L. C. C.,Wu, E. M. H. University of Chicago Press for the American Astro 2014 ASTROPHYSICAL JOURNAL LETTERS - Vol.781 No.1

We have investigated the X-ray and gamma-ray properties of the redback millisecond pulsar PSR J1723-2837 with XMM-Newton, Chandra, and Fermi. We have discovered the X-ray orbital modulation of this binary system with a minimum that coincides with the phases of radio eclipse. The X-ray emission is clearly non-thermal in nature, which can be described well by a simple power law with a photon index of similar to 1.2. The phase-averaged luminosity is similar to 9 x 10(31) erg s(-1) in 0.3-10 keV, which consumes similar to 0.2% of the spin-down power. We have detected the gamma-ray emission in 0.1-300 GeV from this system at a significance of similar to 6 sigma for the first time. The gamma-rays in this energy range consume similar to 2% of the spin-down power and can be modeled by a power law with a photon index of similar to 2.6. We discuss the high energy properties of the new redback in the context of an intrabinary shock model.

SURFACE PROCESSING OF TOOLS AND COMPONENTS BY MEVVA SOURCE ION IMPLANTATION

        Lin, W.L.,Sang, J.M.,Ding, X.J.,Yuan, X.M.,Xu, J.,Zhang, H.X.,Zhang, X.J. The Korean Vacuum Society 1995 Applied Science and Convergence Technology Vol.4 No.s2

Direct implantation of metallic ion species has been employed in surface processing of industrial components and tools with very encouraging improvements in recent years. In spite of high technicla effectiveness, this new surface processing technique has not been extensively accepted by industries mainly because of high cost(capital and operating) compared with other competitive surface processing techniques. High current and large implantation area with eliminating the mass analyzer and the beam-scanning unit make metal vapor vacuum are(MEVVA)source ion implantation versatile, simple and cheap to operate and well suited to commercial surface processing. In this paper, the recent development of MEVVA source ion implantation technique ar Beijing Normal University has been reviewed and the results of production trials of several industrial components and tools implanted by MEVVA source ion implantation have been presented and discussed.

Factors Affecting the Incidence of Angel Wing in White Roman Geese: Stocking Density and Genetic Selection

        Lin, M.J.,Chang, S.C.,Lin, T.Y.,Cheng, Y.S.,Lee, Y.P.,Fan, Y.K. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2016 Animal Bioscience Vol.29 No.6

The present study investigated stocking density and genetic lines, factors that may alter the severity and incidence of angel wing (AW), in White Roman geese. Geese (n = 384) from two genetically selected lines (normal- winged line, NL, and angel-winged line, AL, respectively) and one commercial line (CL) were raised in four pens. Following common commercial practice, low-stocking-density (LD), medium-stocking-density, and high-stocking-density treatments were respectively administered to 24, 32, and 40 geese per pen at 0 to 3 weeks ($1.92m^2/pen$) and 4 to 6 weeks ($13.2m^2/pen$) of age and to 24, 30, and 36 geese at 7 to 14 weeks ($20.0m^2/pen$) of age. The results revealed that stocking density mainly affected body weight gain in geese younger than 4 weeks, and that geese subjected to LD had a high body weight at 2 weeks of age. However, the effect of stocking density on the severity score of AW (SSAW) and incidence of AW (IAW) did not differ significantly among the treatments. Differences were observed among the genetic stocks; that is, SSAW and IAW were significantly higher in AL than in NL and CL. Genetic selection generally aggravates AW, complicating its elimination. To effectively reduce IAW, stocking density, a suspected causal factor, should be lower than that presently applied commercially.
