The thermal stabilities and formation kinetics of K[Nb1/3Te2/3]2O4.8 phase in K2O-Nb2O5-TeO2 glasses were investigated. The activation energies for crystallization and grain growth of the K[Nb1/3Te2/3]2O4.8 phase from original glasses were determined from the results of XRD and DTA data. Transparent 15K2O-15Nb2O5-70TeO2 glass-ceramics have a cubic structure basically, but the cubic structure is very slightly distorted. The activation energy for grain growth of the K[Nb1/3Te2/3]2O4.8 phase in 15K2O-15Nb2O5-70TeO2 glass was 33.5 kJ/mol. The energy required for the phase transformation from 15K2O-15Nb2O5- 70TeO2 glass to K[Nb1/3Te2/3]2O4.8 was 253.6 kJ/mol. The study on the formation kinetics of transparent glass-ceramics with SHG should have a large impact for the development of nonlinear optical materials.
Mapping of Quantitative Trait Loci Affecting Growth Traits in a Japanese Native Chicken Cross

The Hinai-dori is a breed of chicken native to Akita Prefecture, Japan. An $F_2$ resource population produced by crossing low- and high-growth lines of the Hinai-dori breed was analyzed to detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) for growth traits. Highly significant QTLs for body weight at 10 and 14 weeks of age and average daily gain between 4 and 10 weeks and between 10 and 14 weeks of age were accordingly mapped in a common region between ADL0198 and ABR0287 on chromosome 1 and between MCW0240 and ABR0622 on chromosome 4, respectively. A significant QTL for body weight at 4 weeks of age and a significant QTL for average daily gain between 0 and 4 weeks of age were mapped for the first time to the same region flanking ABR0204 and ABR0284 on chromosome 1. These QTLs are good candidates for application in the development of marker-assisted selection strategies for increasing growth efficiencies in the Hinai-dori breed and native breeds of chickens in Asia.
THE GROWTH RATE OF RANDOM BALANCING SEQUENCE

In the present paper, a random sequence is defined by the binary recurrence Zn+1 = AαZn - qZn-1, where α is a random variable which assumes the values +1 and -1 with probability 1=2 each where A is a positive integer and q is a non-zero integer. Furthermore by taking A = 6 and q = 1, the random balancing case has been defined and the remaining cases for A and q have been further tackled. Apart from that an elementary proof regarding the bounds of the expected value for the absolute value of the n-th term in the random balancing sequence has been provided. Moreover, the bounds for the variance of the absolute value of the n-th term has also been obtained. Furthermore, the growth rate of the random sequence has been graphically depicted.

<P>Glasses based on the system of Y2O3-BaO-Nb2O5-B2O3, corresponding to the pseudo-binary 64Ba(1 - x)Y(2x/3)Nb(2)O(6)-B2O3 with x = 0.1-0.5, were prepared, and their thermal properties, electronic polarizabilities, optical basicities, and crystallization behavior were clarified. The glasses showed the glass transition temperature of 602-610 degrees C, crystallization peak temperature of 686-676 degrees C, and refractive index of 1.967-2.007. All the glasses showed the bulk crystallization behavior, providing Ba1 - xY2x/3Nb2O6 nanocrystals with a tetragonal tungsten bronze structure. It was found from high resolution transmission electron microscope observations that the morphology of Ba1 - xY2x/3Nb2O6 nanocrystals is ellipsoidal and their average particle size is in the range of 20-40 nm. The glass-ceramics with Ba1 - xY2x/3Nb2O6 nanocrystals showed high dielectric constants (frequency: 1 kHz) of similar to 90 at room temperature and a ferroelectric nature. Highly oriented Ba1 - xY2x/3Nb2O6 crystal lines were patterned by laser (continuous wave Yb:YVO4 fiber laser with a wavelength of 1080 nm) irradiation with the condition of a laser power of 1.9 W and a laser scanning speed of 4 pm/s and with the laser focal position of 20 mu m beneath from the surface in 2NiO-1.1Y(2)O(3)-29.8BaO-33.1Nb(2)O(5)-36B(2)O(3) glass. Oxidative stress is important for the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a chronic disease that ranges from hepatic steatosis to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2-Kelch-like ECH associated protein 1 (Nrf2-Keap1) pathway is essential for cytoprotection against oxidative stress. In this study, we found that oxidative stress or inflammatory biomarkers and TUNEL positive cells were markedly increased in NASH patients compared to normal or simple steatosis. In addition, we identified that the hepatic mRNA levels of Nrf2 target genes such as Nqo-1 and GSTA-1 were significantly increased in NASH patients. Ezetimibe, a drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, improves NAFLD and alleviates oxidative stress. However, the precise mechanism of its antioxidant function remains largely unknown. We now demonstrate that ezetimibe activates Nrf2-Keap1 pathway which was dependent of autophagy adaptor protein p62, without causing cytotoxicity. Ezetimibe activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which in turn phosphorylates p62 (p-S351) via their direct interaction. Correspondingly, Ezetimibe protected liver cells from saturated fatty acid-induced apoptotic cell death through p62-dependent Nrf2 activation. Furthermore, its role as an Nrf2 activator was supported by methione- and choline- deficient (MCD) diet-induced NASH mouse model, showing that ezetimibe decreased the susceptibility of the liver to oxidative injury. These data demonstrate that the molecular mechanisms underlying ezetimibe's antioxidant role in the pathogenesis of NASH.
