Relationship between Chemical Structures and Functions of Tea Polysaccharides

        Feng Jin,Ling-Yan Jia,You-Ying Tu 한국차학회 2015 한국차학회지 Vol.- No.S

The worldwide consumption of tea is second only to water. Thus any health effects of drinking tea could have a significant impact on public health. Although tea has historically been thought to promote good health, research into the possible health benefits of tea is more recent. Tea polysaccharides sources show various important biological activities together with proteins and polynucleotides, such as anti-blood coagulation, anti-radiation, antioxidant, reducing blood sugar levels, hypoglycemic activities, anti-HIV, anti-cancer, cell-cell communication, cell adhesion and molecular recognition in the immune system, which are strongly affected by their chemical structures and chain conformations. In recent years, some tea polysaccharides sources have attracted much attention in the field of biochemistry and pharmacology. Observational studies have repeatedly shown that tea polysaccharides were mostly glycoconjugates in which a protein carries one or more carbohydrate chains covalently associated with a polypeptide backbone, usually some forms of via N- or O-linkages. It is interesting and important to elucidate the relation among chemical structures, chain conformations of tea polysaccharides and their biological activities. However, tea polysaccharides are usually composed of various monosaccharides linked with different glucosidic bonds. Some tea polysaccharides have hyperbranched structures. Moreover, tea polysaccharides often have high molecular weights, and tend to form aggregates in solution that can mask the behavior of individual macromolecules. In consequence, to characterize the chemical structures and chain conformations of polysaccharides is not an easy task. To make clear the chemical structures and chain conformations of tea polysaccharides is important to understand their biological activities. This article attempts to review the current development on structural and conformational characterization of some tea polysaccharides. In this paper, the various aspects of the investigation results of tea polysaccharides chemical structures in the recent decades were summarized. The chemical structures were analyzed by FTIR, NMR (one and two dimensions), CD and AFM, and so on.

      • Damage Location and Extent Identification of Transmission Tower Combining Flexibility Matrix and Signalterm Amplitude Vector

        Zhou Ling,Li Ying-tao,Chen Jin,Yang Chao-shan,Deng Zhi-ping 보안공학연구지원센터 2016 International Journal of Signal Processing, Image Vol.9 No.10

In order to locate damage posotion and quantify damage degree of transmission tower, the method of damage identification of transmission tower based on flexibility matrix and signalterm amplitude vector was proposed, by combining flexibility matrix method of damage identification and time-frequency analysis method of domain vibration signal. Firstly, the coefficient equation about modal parameters and damage parameters was established, according to the linear relationship between flexibility matrix elements and structure parameters. Then, by Wigner-Ville Distribution (WVD) signalterm analytical deduction of free vibration response of the damping structure, the responding function relation between signalterm amplitude and model parameters was founded. Finally, the coefficient equation was solved by substituting mode shape vector with signalterm amplitude vector, avoiding the structural modal parameters identification, the damage location and extent of transmission tower was detected once and for all. The numerical example analysis of single tower model and tower-line system shows that, the proposed method with good anti-noise performance can accurately detect the extent of single or multiple damage of current structure by a single measurement.

Structural Analysis of an Acidic Polysaccharide Isolated from White Tea

        Feng Jin,Ling-Yan Jia,You-Ying Tu 한국식품과학회 2015 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.24 No.5

A novel white tea polysaccharide (WTPS) was isolated from white tea. The structure and ingredients of WTPS were characterized using UV-vis, an amino acid analyzer, GC, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). WTPS was an acidic polysaccharide mainly composed of mannose (D-Man) and arabinose (L-Ara) with lesser amounts of glucose (D-Glc), rhamnose (L-Rha), and galactose (D-Gal) with molar ratios of 4.5:4.2: 2.2:1.1:1. Seventeen amino acids were confirmed as components of WTPS. The polysaccharide appeared to be homogenous with a weight average Mw of 2.9×104 Da based on gel permeation chromatography analysis. WTPS was identified as a hydrophilic polysaccharide consisting of monosaccharide and acidic heteropolysaccharid chains based on FTIR, NMR, and AFM analysis.

Field-responsive smart composite particle suspension: materials and rheology

        Zhang, Wen Ling,Liu, Ying Dan,Choi, Hyoung-Jin 한국유변학회 2012 Korea-Australia rheology journal Vol.24 No.3

Both electrorheological (ER) and magnetorheological (MR) fluids are known to be smart materials which can be rapidly and reversibly transformed from a fluid-like to a solid-like state within milliseconds by showing dramatic and tunable changes in their rheological properties under external electrical or magnetic field strength, respectively. Here, among various smart composite particles studied, recently developed core-shell structured polystyrene/graphene oxide composite based ER material as well as the dual-step functionally coated carbonyl iron composite based MR material are briefly reviewed along with their rheological characteristics under external fields.

      • Colorectal Cancer Mortality Characteristics and Predictions in China, 1991-2011

        Fang, Jia-Ying,Dong, Hong-Li,Sang, Xue-Jin,Xie, Bin,Wu, Ku-Sheng,Du, Pei-Ling,Xu, Zhen-Xi,Jia, Xiao-Yue,Lin, Kun Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.17

Background: To identify the epidemiological characteristics of colorectal cancer mortality in China during the period of 1991-2011, and forecast the future five-year trend. Materials and Methods: Mortality data for colorectal cancer in China from 1991 to 2011 was used to describe epidemiological characteristics in terms of age group, gender, and rural/urban residence. Trend surface analysis was performed to analyze the geographical distribution of colorectal cancer. Four models including curve estimation, time series modeling, gray modeling and joinpoint regression were applied to forecast the trends for the future five years. Results: Since 1991 the colorectal cancer mortality rate increased yearly, and our results showed that the trend would continue to increase in the ensuing 5 years. The mortality rate in males was higher than that of females and the rate in urban areas was higher than in rural areas. The mortality rate was relatively low for individuals less than 60 years of age, but increased dramatically afterwards. People living in the northeastern China provinces or in eastern China had a higher mortality rate for colorectal cancer than those living in middle or western China provinces. Conclusions: The steadily increasing mortality of colorectal cancer in China will become a substantial public health burden in the foreseeable future. For this increasing trend to be controlled, further efforts should concentrate on educating the general public to increase prevention and early detection by screening. More effective prevention and management strategies are needed in higher mortality areas (Eastern parts of China) and high-risk populations (60+ years old).

Graphene oxide coated core–shell structured polystyrene microspheres and their electrorheological characteristics under applied electric field

Zhang, Wen Ling,Liu, Ying Dan,Choi, Hyoung Jin Royal Society of Chemistry 2011 Journal of materials chemistry Vol.21 No.19

Core–shell structured polystyrene (PS)–graphene oxide (GO) microspherical particles were synthesized by adsorbing the GO sheets on the PS surface through a strong π–π stacking interaction. As core materials, monodispersed PS microspheres were prepared using a dispersion polymerization, while the shell part of GO was synthesized by a modified Hummers method. Morphology of the composite particles was studied by both scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, while their structure and chemical components were examined via X-ray diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, respectively. All the data confirmed the coexistence of PS and GO with the expected core–shell structure of the composite. In addition, for the study on the electroresponsive behavior, the composite was dispersed in silicone oil and its electrorheological (ER) characteristics were examined via both an optical microscope and a rotational rheometer which was equipped with a high voltage source. Without an electric field, it behaved like a fluid, however, when an external electric field is present, the particles became polarized and demonstrated typical chain-like ER structures.

Graphic Abstract

Core–shell structured polystyrene–graphene oxide (PS/GO) microspheres were synthesized via adsorbing GO sheets on the PS surface.
