Function of Lysine-148 in dTDP-D-Glucose 4,6-dehydratase from Streptomyces antibioticus Tu99

dTDP-D-glucose 4,6-dehydratase (TDPDH) catalyzes the conversion of dTDP-D-glucose to dTDP-4-keto-6-deoxy-D-glucose, and requires NAD+ as a coenzyme for its catalytic activity. The dTDP-D-glucose 4,6-dehydratase from Streptomyces antibioticus Tu99 tightly binds NAD+ [19]. In order to determine the role of lysine-148 in the NAD+ binding, the lysine of the dTDP-D-glucose 4,6-dehydratase from Streptomyces antibioticus Tu99 was mutated to various amino acids by site-directed mutagenesis. The catalytic activity of the four mutated enzymes of TDPDH did not recover after addition of NAD+. However, the activity of K159A, the mutated enzyme of UDP-D-glucose 4-epimerase (UDPE), recovered after the addition of NAD+ [15]. Although dTDP-glucose 4,6-dehydratase, and UDP-galactose (glucose) 4-epimerase are members of the short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase SDR family and the lysine-148 of TDPDH was highly conserved as in UDPE (Lys-l59), the function of the lysine-148 of TDPDH was different from that of UDPE. The mutated enzymes showed that the lysine-l48 of the dTDP-D-glucose 4,6-dehydratase played no role in the NAD+ binding. Accordingly, it is suggested that the lysine-l48 of the dTDP-D-glucose 4,6-dehydratase is involved in the folding of TDPDH.
Factors Associated with Attending the National Cancer Screening Program for Liver Cancer in Korea

Background and Aims: The National Cancer Screening Program (NCSP) for liver cancer was initiated in 2003 in Korea. The objective of this study was to evaluate the participation rate of the program and to provide preliminary information on its results based on data collected by the NCSP in 2009. Methods: The target population of the NCSP for liver cancer in 2009 was comprised of 373,590 adults aged ${\geq}40$ years at high risk for liver cancer. Participation rates and positivity rates were assessed in this population. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the factors associated with participation in the NCSP for liver cancer. Results: The overall participation rate was 37.9% and 1,126 participants were positive at screening. The highest participation rates were observed in women, those in their 60s, National Health Insurance beneficiaries, and individuals positive for hepatitis B surface antigen. Positivity rates for men, those in their 70s, Medical Aid Program recipients and individuals with liver cirrhosis were the highest in the respective categories of gender, age, health insurance type, and risk factor for liver cancer. Conclusions: The participation rates of the NCSP for liver cancer are still low, despite the fact that the program targets a high-risk group much smaller than the general population. Efforts to facilitate participation and to reduce disparities in liver cancer screening among Korean men and women are needed. These results provide essential data for evidence-based strategies for liver cancer control in Korea.
Dorsal Short-Segment Fixation for Unstable Thoracolumbar Junction Fractures

Objective : This study is to evaluate the efficacy of dorsal short-segment fixation in unstable thoracolumbar junction fractures. Methods : The cases of 20 patients who underwent dorsal short-segment fixation were reviewed retrospectively. Clinical outcomes were analysed using Sonntag's pain level, work status, and neurological scale according to the modified Frankel classification. Radiological outcomes were analysed using Mumford's anterior body compression[%], canal compromise ratio, and Cobb's kyphotic angle. Results : At the latest clinical follow-up [average=14.6 months]. there were 19 [95.0%] in group I and 1 patient [5.0%] in II in pain level. The postoperative work status were 17 [85.0%] in group I, 2 patients [10.0%] in II, and 1 patient [5.0%] in V. Surgery brought to improve the neurologic status. In success group [19 cases, 95%], the average canal compromise ratio was reduced from 0.57 [${\pm}0.07$] to 0.05 [${\pm}0.08$] [P<005], the average anterior body compression [%] was reduced from 41% [${\pm}17$] to 18% [${\pm}14$] [P<0.05], and the average preoperative kyphotic angle was $20.0^{\circ}$ [${\pm}9.0$], and corrected to $5.7^{\circ}$ [${\pm}7.1$] postoperatively, and progressed to $7.8^{\circ}$ [${\pm}6.2$] at the latest follow-up. There was a case of implantation failure in an elderly osteoporotic patient. Conclusion : Although there are limitations in the patient number and follow-up period, the present study favors dorsal short-segment fixation for selective cases in unstable thoracolumbar junction fractures.
Desmoplastic Fibroma of the Skull

Desmoplastic fibromas are rare intraosseous bone tumors. They are benign but locally aggressive and frequently found in the long bones and mandible. We report radiographic and histopathologic finding of a case desmoplastic fibroma involving right temporal skull bone. A 53-year-old woman presented at our hospital complaining of continuous right side headaches for a year. Simple skull X-ray film showed $3{\times}2.5cm$ lytic lesion with mild sclerotic margin on right temporal area. A large craniectomy 1cm lateral to margin was fashioned. The resected mass showed encapsulated mass colored white gray. Histologic diagnosis was compatible with that of a the desmoplastic fibroma. There was no evidence of recurrence during the 15months of follow-up period.
방향족 폴리에스터 폴리올을 이용한 폴리우레탄 분산체의 합성과 특성에 관한 연구

Aromatic polyurethane dispersions were synthesized with dimethylolpropionic acid (DMPA), isophorone diisocyanate(IPDI), and aromatic polyester polyol, prepared chemical reaction of esterification and polycondensation, The structures of these polyurethanes were characterized by FT0IR, H-NMR, and the properties were measured with DSC, TGA. Increase aromatic polyol contents made of unplasticized polyurethane dispersions. As the aromatic structures in polyurethane dispersions introduced, glass transition temperature(T_(g)) and thermal stability increased. In this polyurethane dispersions increased with DMPA concentrations, particle size decreased and dispersible stability increased and T_(g) increased over 50℃.
