GazeVis: Interactive 3D Gaze Visualization for Contiguous Cross-Sectional Medical Images
Hyunjoo Song,Jihye Yun,Bohyoung Kim,Jinwook Seo IEEE Computer Society 2014 IEEE transactions on visualization and computer gr Vol.20 No.5

Gaze visualization has been used to understand the results from gaze tracking studies in a wide range of fields. In the medical field, diagnoses of medical images have been studied with gaze tracking technology to understand how radiologists read medical images. While prior work were mainly based on diagnosis with a single image, recent work focused on diagnosis with consecutive cross-sectional medical images acquired from preoperative computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In the diagnosis, radiologists scroll through a stack of images to get a 3D cognition of organs and lesions. Thus, it is important to understand radiologists' gaze patterns three dimensionally across such contiguous cross-sectional images. However, little has been done to visualize more complicated gaze patterns from the contiguous cross-sectional medical images. To address this problem, we present an interactive 3D gaze visualization tool, GazeVis, where InfoVis and SciVis techniques are harmonized to show the abstract gaze data along with a realistic 3D rendering of the visual stimuli (i.e., organs and lesions). We present case studies with 12 radiologists who use GazeVis to investigate gaze patterns of their colleagues with different levels of expertise, providing empirical evidences about the competence of our gaze visualization system.

We present an interactive visual analytics framework, GazeDx (abbr. of GazeDiagnosis), for the comparative analysis of gaze data from multiple readers examining volumetric images while integrating important contextual information with the gaze data. Gaze pattern comparison is essential to understanding how radiologists examine medical images, and to identifying factors influencing the examination. Most prior work depended upon comparisons with manually juxtaposed static images of gaze tracking results. Comparative gaze analysis with volumetric images is more challenging due to the additional cognitive load on 3D perception. A recent study proposed a visualization design based on direct volume rendering (DVR) for visualizing gaze patterns in volumetric images; however, effective and comprehensive gaze pattern comparison is still challenging due to a lack of interactive visualization tools for comparative gaze analysis. We take the challenge with GazeDx while integrating crucial contextual information such as pupil size and windowing into the analysis process for more in-depth and ecologically valid findings. Among the interactive visualization components in GazeDx, a context-embedded interactive scatterplot is especially designed to help users examine abstract gaze data in diverse contexts by embedding medical imaging representations well known to radiologists in it. We present the results from two case studies with two experienced radiologists, where they compared the gaze patterns of 14 radiologists reading two patients' volumetric CT images.

Vol.21 No.9
The accuracy and precision of video-based remote gaze trackers is affected by numerous factors (e.g. the head movement of the participant). However, it is challenging to control all factors that have an influence, and doing so (e.g., using a chin-rest to control geometry) could lead to losing the benefit of using gaze trackers, i.e., the ecological validity of their unobtrusive nature. We propose an adaptive zoom-based gaze tracking technique, ZoomTrack that addresses this problem by improving the resolution of the gaze tracking results. Our approach magnifies a region-of-interest (ROI) and retrieves gaze points at a higher resolution under two different zooming modes: only when the gaze reaches the ROI (temporary) or whenever a participant stares at the stimuli (omnipresent). We compared these against the base case without magnification in a user study. The results are then used to summarize the advantages and limitations of our technique.
VR 및 AR 환경에서의 시공간 데이터 시각화를 위한 동향 분석
송현주(Hyunjoo Song) 한국방송·미디어공학회 2018 방송공학회논문지 Vol.23 No.1
VR(Virtual Reality) and AR(Augmented Reality) devices are becoming more common, and the need for proper contents presentation techniques in such environments has been growing ever since the popularization of the devices. One of the contents is the spatio-temporal data, which has become more prominent since it could be both generated and consumed by a large number of ordinary users. In this work, the researcher analyzed the characteristics of spatio-temporal data as a source for visualization in VR and AR environment, and categorized prior visualization methods for such data, which were devised for traditional monitors. The researcher also reviewed the hardware specification of state-of-the-art devices, and examined the possibility of adopting the previous visualization approaches. This work is expected to contribute in designing spatio-temporal visualization for VR and AR environment by utilizing their unique characteristics.

The Korean Provincial Reconstruction Team(PRT) has been working in Parwan province, one of the 34 provinces, in Afghanistan since 1 July of 2010 for the establishment of stability, the reduction of poverty, the rebuilding of peace, and the development of economy in Afghan society. An advisory group has been sent with the Korean PRT to aid with the reconstruction of the Parwan province by consulting the Parwan government regarding policies and projects. Gender is one of the areas in the advisory group, along with governance, economy, agriculture, public health, and vocational training. By analyzing the status of Afghan women in Parwan province, a need for a gender strategic framework within the 5 areas mentioned above has arisen. The utmost needed policies and projects for women and girls is to ‘increase access to education’ and public health, followed by a capacity building in the 5 areas. In the projects of the Korean PRT, an emphasis should be given to access to education and health for women by the construction of girls’ secondary schools, female dormitories at university, female teacher training centers, community learning centers, and maternal & child health centers. Meanwhile, in the capacity building, teachers’ training, leadership training and VAW workshop should be considered in the projects to enhance the quality of the teachers, to promote women’s participation in community councils, and to raise awareness of the elimination of VAW.
