      • Experimental shear strengthening of GFRC beams without stirrups using innovative techniques

        Marwa Hany,Mohamed H. Makhlouf,Gamal Ismail,Ahmed S. Debaiky 국제구조공학회 2022 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.83 No.4

Eighteen (18) (120×300×2200 mm) beams were prepared and tested to evaluate the shear strength of Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) beams with no shear reinforcement, and evaluate the effectiveness of various innovative strengthening systems to increase the shear capacity of the GFRC beams. The test variables are the amount of discrete glass fiber (0.0, 0.6, and 1.2% by volume of concrete) and the type of longitudinal reinforcement bars (steel or GFRP), the strengthening systems (externally bonded (EB) sheet, side near-surface mounted (SNSM) bars, or the two together), strengthening material (GFRP or steel) links, different configurations of NSM GFRP bars (side bonded links, full wrapped stirrups, side C-shaped stirrups, and side bent bars), link spacing, link inclination angle, and the number of bent bars. The experimental results showed that adding the discrete glass fiber to the concrete by 0.6%, and 1.2% enhanced the shear strength by 18.5% and 28%, respectively in addition to enhancing the ductility. The results testified the efficiency of different strengthening systems, where it is enhanced the shear capacity by a ratio of 28.4% to 120%, and that is a significant improvement. Providing SNSM bent bars with strips as a new strengthening technique exhibited better shear performance in terms of crack propagation, and improved shear capacity and ductility compared to other strengthening techniques. Based on the experimental shear behavior, an analytical study, which allows the estimation of the shear capacity of the strengthened beams, was proposed, the results of the experimental and analytical study were comparable by a ratio of 0.91 to 1.15.

Monitoring and Characterization of Insecticido Resistance in the Cotton Leafworm, Spodoptera littoraiis (Boisd.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Elghar Gamal E. Abo,Elbermawy Zeinab A.,Yousef Adel G.,Elhady Hany K. Abd Korean Society of Applied Entomology 2005 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.8 No.4

Resistance to several classes of insecticides was diagnosed in the cotton leafworm (CLW), Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.), from cotton fields in the Nile Delta Egypt through 2002-2004 seasons. Two types of laboratory bioassays were used for the detection of insecticide resistance. Leaf-dip larval bioassay and discriminating concentration ($LC_{99}$ for susceptible laboratory strain) technique revealed the presence of resistance to insecticides tested. Both larval and adult stages showed relatively similar response to most insecticides tested. However, the glass vial-discriminating concentration technique is particularly more useful when resistance is related to the target-site insensitivity rather than to increased metabolism. The pattern of reversion of resistance to five insecticides was determined in two field strains that have been released from continuous insecticide application and then reared under laboratory conditions for 6-8 generations in the absence of insecticide pressure. It was considered that losing of resistance to cypermethrin in both resistant field strains seemed to be quicker than other insecticides tested, in which resistance ratios decreased from 47.7-fold ($F_o$- parents) to 17.8- fold ($F_6$ generation) in MNF- strain, and from 38.5-fold ($F_o$-parents) to 10.7-fold ($F_6$ generation) in KFR-strain. On the other hand, biochemical assays indicated that both MNF- and KFR-field strains, expressed higher levels of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity by 13.2- and 8.4-times, respectively, than that of the susceptible strain. AChE activity was sharply decreased to 1.01- and 1.92- times in MNF- and KFR-strains, respectively, compared to that of susceptible strain, following insect rearing for six successive generations without insecticide pressure. Esterases activity was also decreased 2.02-times ($F_o$) to 1.41 ($F_6$) in KFR-strain and from 2.0-times ($F_o$) to 1.21-times ($F_6$) in KFR-strain, compared to that of susceptible strain. On the other hand, analysis of esterases by native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) confirmed the association between esterases activity and resistance to insecticides tested in both field strains.

Impacts of the calcination temperature on the structural and radiation shielding properties of the NASICON compound synthesized from zircon minerals

        Alhindawy Islam G.,Gamal Hany,Almuqrin Aljawhara.H.,Sayyed M.I.,Mahmoud K.A. 한국원자력학회 2023 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.55 No.5

The present work aims to fabricate Na1þxZr2SixP3-xO12 compound at various calcination temperatures based on the zircon mineral. The fabricated compound was calcinated at 250, 500, and 1000C. The effect of calcination temperature on the structure, crystal phase, and radiation shielding properties was studied for the fabricated compound. The X-ray diffraction diffractometer demonstrates that, the monoclinic crystal phase appeared at a calcination temperature of 250C and 500C is totally transformed to a highsymmetry hexagonal crystal phase under a calcination temperature of 1000C. The radiation shielding capacity was also qualified for the fabricated compounds using the Monte Carlo N-Particle transport code in the g-photons energy interval between 15keV and 122keV. The impacts of calcination temperature on the g-ray shielding behavior were clarified in the present study, where the linear attenuation coefficient was enhanced by 218% at energy of 122keV, when the calcination temperature increased from 250 to 1000C, respectively

Phytochemical investigation of Ficus pandurataHance (Moraceae) fruits has led to the isolation of two newtriterpenoids, ficupanduratin A [1b-hydroxy-3b-acetoxy-11a-methoxy-urs-12-ene] (11) and ficupanduratin B [21ahydroxy-3b-acetoxy-11a-methoxy-urs-12-ene] (17), alongwith 20 known compounds: a-amyrin acetate (1), a-amyrin(2), 3b-acetoxy-20-taraxasten-22-one (3), 3b-acetoxy-11amethoxy-olean-12-ene (4), 3b-acetoxy-11a-methoxy-12-ursene (5), 11-oxo-a-amyrin acetate (6), 11-oxo-b-amyrinacetate (7), palmitic acid (8), stigmast-4,22-diene-3,6-dione(9), stigmast-4-ene-3,6-dione (10), stigmasterol (12), b-sitosterol(13), stigmast-22-ene-3,6-dione (14), stigmastane-3,6-dione (15), 3b,21b-dihydroxy-11a-methoxy-olean-12-ene (16), 3b-hydroxy-11a-methoxyurs-12-ene (18), 6-hydroxystigmast-4,22-diene-3-one (19), 6-hydroxystigmast-4-ene-3-one (20), 11a,21a-dihydroxy-3b-acetoxy-urs-12-ene(21), and b-sitosterol-3-O-b-D-glucopyranoside (22). Compound21 is reported for the first time from a natural source. The structures of the 20 compounds were elucidated on thebasis of IR, 1D (1H and 13C), 2D (1H–1H COSY, HSQC,HMBC and NOESY) NMR and MS spectroscopic data, inaddition to comparison with literature data. The isolatedcompounds were evaluated for their anti-microbial, antimalarial,anti-leishmanial, and cytotoxic activities. In addition, their radioligand displacement affinity on opioid andcannabinoid receptors was assessed. Compounds 4, 11, and15 exhibited good affinity towards the CB2 receptor, withdisplacement values of 69.7, 62.5 and 86.5 %, respectively. Furthermore, the binding mode of the active compounds inthe active site of the CB2 cannabinoid receptors was investigatedthrough molecular modelling.
