        Hyaluronic acid reduces inflammation and crevicular fluid IL-1β concentrations in peri-implantitis: a randomized controlled clinical trial

        Purpose: This study investigated the effects of hyaluronic acid (HA) on peri-implant clinical variables and crevicular concentrations of the proinflammatory biomarkers interleukin (IL)-1β and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in patients with peri-implantitis. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted in peri-implantitis patients. Patients were randomized to receive a 0.8% HA gel (test group), an excipient-based gel (control group 1), or no gel (control group 2). Clinical periodontal variables and marginal bone loss after 0, 45, and 90 days of treatment were assessed. IL-1β and TNF-α levels in crevicular fluid were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays at baseline and after 45 days of treatment. Clustering analysis was performed, considering the possibility of multiple implants in a single patient. Results: Sixty-one patients with 100 dental implants were assigned to the test group, control group 1, or control group 2. Probing pocket depth (PPD) was significantly lower in the test group than in both control groups at 45 days (control 1: 95% CI, -1.66, -0.40 mm; control 2: 95% CI, -1.07, -0.01 mm) and 90 days (control 1: 95% CI, -1.72, -0.54 mm; control 2: 95% CI, -1.13, -0.15 mm). There was a trend towards less bleeding on probing in the test group than in control group 2 at 90 days (P=0.07). Implants with a PPD ≥5 mm showed higher levels of IL-1β in the control group 2 at 45 days than in the test group (P=0.04). Conclusions: This study demonstrates for the first time that the topical application of a HA gel in the peri-implant pocket and around implants with peri-implantitis may reduce inflammation and crevicular fluid IL-1β levels.

        Un siglo de humor en La columna periodistica de autores gallegos: hacia una columna Ludica de autor y personaje

        El proposito de este articulo es analizar el humor como recurso estilistico, retorico y narrativo (es decir, literario) en la columna periodistica. Para ello, se ha seleccionado a cuatro autores gallegos que cubren un periodo temporal cercano a un siglo, el transcurrido desde principios del siglo XX hasta la actualidad: Julio Camba, Ricardo Outeirino, Wenceslao Fernandez Florez y Manuel Jabois. Mas en concreto, el presente trabajo pretende examinar los resortes empleados por estos autores para presentar a sus lectores informacion, analisis y opinion en clave humoristica, asi como los diferentes grados de protagonismo del autor como personaje. Se procura definir, al mismo tiempo, la evolucion general experimentada por el genero proteico denominado columna (desde un esquema basico facilmente reconocible: informacion-opinion-humor) y su tendencia actual hacia lo que se propone denominar columna ludica, que otorga al humor relevancia definitiva y encuentra especificidad, ademas, en la presentacion indisimulada de su autor como personaje protagonista. Para todo ello, se opta por una aproximacion teorica transversal y eclectica, integradora, articulada en torno a ideas, conceptos y propuestas para el analisis proporcionados por la teoria de los generos literarios y de los generos periodisticos, la narratologia, la retorica y el analisis del discurso.

      • Expression of the <i>Ciona intestinalis</i> Alternative Oxidase (AOX) in <i>Drosophila</i> Complements Defects in Mitochondrial Oxidative Phosphorylation

        <P><B>Summary</B></P><P>Defects in mitochondrial OXPHOS are associated with diverse and mostly intractable human disorders. The single-subunit alternative oxidase (AOX) found in many eukaryotes, but not in arthropods or vertebrates, offers a potential bypass of the OXPHOS cytochrome chain under conditions of pathological OXPHOS inhibition. We have engineered <I>Ciona intestinalis</I> AOX for conditional expression in <I>Drosophila melanogaster.</I> Ubiquitous AOX expression produced no detrimental phenotype in wild-type flies. However, mitochondrial suspensions from AOX-expressing flies exhibited a significant cyanide-resistant substrate oxidation, and the flies were partially resistant to both cyanide and antimycin. AOX expression was able to complement the semilethality of partial knockdown of both <I>cyclope</I> (COXVIc) and the complex IV assembly factor <I>Surf1</I>. It also rescued the locomotor defect and excess mitochondrial ROS production of flies mutated in <I>dj-1</I>β, a <I>Drosophila</I> homolog of the human Parkinson's disease gene <I>DJ1</I>. AOX appears to offer promise as a wide-spectrum therapeutic tool in OXPHOS disorders.</P>

        Explaining the Drift Behavior of Caffeine and Glucosamine After Addition of Ethyl Lactate in the Buffer Gas of an Ion Mobility Spectrometer

        Protonated caffeine ($CH^+$) and glucosamine ($GH^+$) overlapped in an analysis with ion mobility spectrometryquadrupole mass spectrometry. Ethyl lactate vapor (L) at different concentrations from 0 to 22 mmol $m^{-3}$ was added as a buffer gas modifier to separate these signals. The drift times of $CH^+$ and $GH^+$ increased with L concentration. The drift time increase was associated to clustering equilibria of $CH^+$ and $GH^+$ with one molecule of L and the equilibrium of $GH^+$ was more displaced to the formation of $GLH^+$ than that of $GLH^+$. $GH^+$ clustered more to L than $CH^+$ because $GLH^+$ formed more stable hydrogen bonds (26.30 kcal/mol) than $GLH^+$ (24.66 kcal/mol) and the positive charge in $GH^+$ was more sterically accessible than in $CH^+$. The aim of this work was to use theoretical calculations to guide the selection of a buffer gas modifier for IMS separations of two compounds that overlap in the mobility spectra and predict this separation, simplifying that empirical process.

        Upregulation of duck interleukin-17A during Riemerella anatipestifer infection

        <P>Although IL-17 cytokines play critical roles in host defense immunity, dysregulated expression of these cytokines is associated with inflammation and autoimmune diseases. Riemerella anatipestifer is the most important infectious bacterium in the duck industry. Interestingly, not all avian species are equally susceptible to R. anatipestifer infection. This paper reports the first description of mortality rate, bacterial burden, and expression profiles of immune-related genes between ducks and chickens infected with R. anatipestifer. Ducks exhibited increased susceptibility to R. anatipestifer infection compared to chickens, as determined by mortality rate and bacterial burden. Comparative expression analyses of immune-related genes in R. anatipestifer-infected tissues obtained from both species revealed that TLR3, TLR7, IL-2, IL-4, and IFN-gamma transcript levels were higher in chickens, whereas TLR4 and IL-17A transcript levels were higher in ducks. Marked increases in expression of IL-17A and IL-6, but not TGF-beta, were associated with Th17 cell differentiation in duck splenic lymphocytes, but not in chicken splenic lymphocytes, stimulated with R. anatipestifer. Moreover, upregulation of IL-1 beta, IL-6, and IL-17A mRNA expressions, but not TGF-beta, was confirmed in the liver and spleen of ducks infected with R. anatipestifer, indicating that IL-17A is strongly associated with Riemerella infection in ducks.         Permanent Magnet Temperature Estimation in PM Synchronous Motors Using Low-Cost Hall Effect Sensors

        <P>Knowledge of the permanent magnet (PM) temperature in PM synchronous machines (PMSMs) is of great importance both for control and monitoring purposes. Increase in PM temperature during motor operation can degrade the magnetic flux strength and consequently the machine's torque production capability, and can also cause irreversible demagnetization of the PM. Direct measurement of the PM temperature is not viable in practice due to both cost and reliability issues. Indirect PM temperature estimation methods recently studied require knowledge of thermal or electrical model parameters or can have undesired effects on motor operation. In this paper, the feasibility of using low-cost Hall-effect sensors for PM temperature estimation is investigated. Hall sensors are present for detecting the initial position of the rotor in majority of PMSM applications for which incremental encoders are used for control. The proposed method can, therefore, be implemented with low or no additional cost. Experimental results on two interior PMSMs show that the method is capable of providing noninvasive estimation of the PM temperature without a priori motor parameter information for monitoring and protection against excessive increase in temperature.</P>

        Downregulation of inflammatory cytokines by berberine attenuates <i>Riemerella anatipestifer</i> infection in ducks

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P> <I>Riemerella anatipestifer,</I> an important infectious bacterium affecting the duck industry, has 5–75% mortality, depending on strain virulence. We previously demonstrated that proinflammatory cytokines are involved in inflammation during, and regulating susceptibility to, <I>R. anatipestifer</I> infection. We investigated the effects of the anti-inflammatory compound berberine in duck splenic lymphocytes stimulated with killed <I>R. anatipestifer,</I> and in <I>R. anatipestifer-</I>infected ducks. IL-17A, IL-17F, and IL-1β transcripts were downregulated, and IFN-γ and IL-10 transcripts enhanced, in berberine-treated stimulated splenic lymphocytes, compared to stimulated untreated splenic lymphocytes. Similarly, IL-17A, IL-17F, IL-6, and IL-1β expressions were significantly reduced, and IFN-γ and IL-10 expressions significantly upregulated, in spleens and livers of <I>R. anatipestifer-</I>infected berberine-treated ducks, compared to infected untreated birds. Moreover, infected and treated birds showed increased survival rates and significantly decreased bacterial burdens compared to infected untreated birds, confirming that inflammatory cytokines are strongly associated with <I>R. anatipestifer</I> infection in ducks.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> <I>R. anatipestifer</I> infection is ameliorated by inflammatory cytokine suppression. </LI> <LI> Expression levels of IL-17A, IL-17F, IL-1β or IL-6 mRNA were significantly reduced by berberine treatment. </LI> <LI> Expression of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 was enhanced <I>in vitro</I> and <I>in vivo.</I> </LI> <LI> Berberine-treated infected ducks had lower mortality rate and bacterial load. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Understanding Current Issues in Research and Education in Science and Technology: A Framework of Knowledge and Action Sharing between Universities and Science and Technology Parks

        Humanity is experiencing a very fast-paced technological evolution. As technological systems evolve exponentially, societies are becoming more global and are starting to have impacts beyond their geographic demarcations. This implies that, the actions of a person who is across the ocean from where we live could have significant impacts on our everyday lives. This article explores the complexity of globalization, identifies a number of global issues, and looks at the University and the Science and Technology Parks as potential sources of human capital to tackle current and forthcoming global challenges, ranging from new energy sources to potable water distributions. The article focuses on current efforts that are taking place across universities and science and technology parks around the world. We propose a new methodology whereby interdisciplinary work can inform the development of multidisciplinary approaches to solve some of the most complex global issues such as cyber security and educating the next generations of global leaders, providing them them with the necessary skills to be successful in a globally distributed workforce.
