Comparison between Siderophores Production by Fungi Isolated from Heavy Metals Polluted and Rhizosphere Soils

        Khalid A. Hussein,Jin Ho Joo 한국토양비료학회 2012 한국토양비료학회지 Vol.45 No.5

Although siderophores are induced primarily in response to iron deficiency, soil and other ecological factors can affect on this process. This study was to evaluate the production of siderophores by different fungal species isolated from heavy metal contaminated and uncontaminated soils. More than thirty fungal strains were isolated from heavy metal contaminated and rhizosphere uncontaminated soils. Chrome azurol sulfonate (CAS) was used for both quantitative and qualitative evaluation of siderophores production. No significant correlations were observed between the tested variables such as ultraviolet (UV) irradiation method and CAS-agar plate and heavy metal concentration in both soils. The production of siderophores in rhizosphere fungi was higher than those isolated from the contaminated soil; however, the difference was not significant. The siderophore production (%) by fungi isolated from heavy metal contaminated soil using UV irradiation method was positively correlated with the qualitative values using CAS-plate method (P 〈0.05). Pearson correlation test indicated a positive correlation between the quantitative and qualitative methods of detection for fungi isolated from rhizosphere and also those isolated from heavy metal contaminated soil.

Isolation and Detection of Genes Responsible for Pyoverdines Biosynthesis in Pseudomonas putida KNUK9

        Khalid A. Hussein,Jin Ho Joo 한국토양비료학회 2015 한국토양비료학회지 Vol.48 No.2

Pyoverdines (PVDs) are organic compounds produced by the fluorescent Pseudomonads under iron starvation conditions. Among the isolated rhizosphere pseudomonads strains, P. putida KNUK9 showed the highest production of PVDs and its production reached to 62.81% siderophores units. DNA isolation, ligation, PCR amplification, and transformation using E. coli DH5α cells were carried out for preparing the strong pyoverdine producer strains. We detected seven genes playing the fundamental roles in the pyoverdine metabolism in Pseudomonads. According to data and analysis obtained from the study, we deduced that the strain P. putida KNUK9 contains the essential genes required for pyoverdine biosynthesis.

The Impact of Preoperative Antithrombotic Therapy on the Risks for Thrombo-ischemic Events and Bleeding among Patients Undergoing Elective Spine Surgery

        Khalid Syed I.,Mirpuri Pranav,Chilakapati Sai,Kwak Angelika,Mitchell Devon,Adogwa Owoicho,Mehta Ankit I. 대한척추외과학회 2023 Asian Spine Journal Vol.17 No.6

Study Design: Retrospective matched analysis.Purpose: To evaluate the effect of antithrombotic drug therapy on the rates of thrombo-ischemic or bleeding events 90 days following elective spine surgery.Overview of Literature: Thrombo-ischemic and bleeding complications in patients undergoing spine surgery are major causes of morbidity. Many patients who pursue elective spine surgery are concurrently receiving antithrombotic therapy for unrelated conditions; however, at this time, the effects of preoperative antithrombotic use on postoperative bleeding and thrombosis are unclear. Methods: Using an all-payer claims database, patients who underwent elective cervical and lumbar spine interventions between January 1, 2010, and June 30, 2018, were identified. Individuals were categorized into groups taking and not taking antithrombotics. A 1:1 analysis was constructed based on comorbidities found to be independently associated with bleeding or ischemic complications using logistic regression models. The primary outcomes were the rates of thrombo-ischemic events and bleeding complications. Results: A total of 660,866 patients were eligible for inclusion. Following the matching procedure, 56,476 patient records were analyzed, with 28,238 in each group. The antithrombotic agent group had significantly greater odds of developing any 90-day thromboischemic event after surgery: deep vein thrombosis (odds ratio [OR], 3.61; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.06–4.25), pulmonary embolism (OR, 3.93; 95% CI, 3.34–4.62), myocardial infarction (OR, 6.20; 95% CI, 5.69–6.76), and ischemic stroke (OR, 3.76; 95% CI, 3.31–4.27). In addition, the antithrombotic agent group had an increased likelihood of experiencing hematoma (OR, 1.54; 95% CI, 1.35–1.76) and need for transfusion (OR, 2.61; 95% CI, 2.29–2.96).Conclusions: Patients taking antithrombotic medications before elective surgery of the cervical and lumbar spine had increased risks of both ischemic and bleeding events. Spine surgeons should carefully consider these implications when appraising patients for surgery, given the lack of guidelines on perioperative management of antithrombotic agents.

Study of Drop-on-Demand Printing Through Multi-Step Pulse Voltage

Khalid Rahman,Arshad Khan,Nguyen Minh Nam,최경현,김동수 한국정밀공학회 2011 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.12 No.4

This paper presents study of the Electrohydrodynamic Drop-on-Demand (DOD) phenomena by applying the multi-step pulse voltage. The multi-step voltage was generated through the high voltage power source connected with pulse generator. A DOD phenomenon was observed with the help of high speed camera. For study purpose the experiments were performed on ethanol by changing the operating parameters such as multi-step pulsed voltage, frequency of applied pulsed voltage and flow-rate. For DOD printing purpose conductive ink is used and patterns were made on the glass substrate and analyzed on different operating conditions. The minimum droplet diameter of approximately 40μm at 325Hz frequency was achieved on the glass substrate. The printed pattern exhibited the linear ohmic behavior and pattern material is characterized through XRD. This study will help in better understanding of the Electrohydrodynamic DOD phenomena for the printing purpose.

The Universality and Cultural Specificity of Emotions through a Comparative Semantic Analysis of Emotion Terms in English and MA

Khalid Elasri,Abdelhakim Boubekri 세종대학교 언어연구소 2020 Journal of Universal Language Vol.21 No.2

Johnson-Laird & Oatley’s analysis of emotion terms in English reveals that these terms are organised in a semantic field encompassing categories that denote generic emotions, basicemotions, emotional relations, caused emotions, causatives, emotional goals, and complex emotions. All the emotions are based on five modes: happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and disgust. This approach, termed ‘a theory of communication’, served a communicative function both within the brain and within social groups. However, whether this theory is applicable to all languages remains unspecified, that is, whether emotions of all languages are organized across these five modes, thereby rendering these modes universal, is not yet clear. Therefore, the present study attempts to assess the universality of this theory by investigating the emotion lexicon of Moroccan Arabic (MA) through a corpus including examples given by 29 native speakers of this language. A semantic analysis of the emotion terms shows that they are organized in the same categories found in the English language. Nevertheless, the highest category in MA consists of causative emotions, indicating that, unlike English, emotions in MA arise as relational phenomena, embedded in social situations.

Assessment of Construction Project Contractor Selection Success Factors considering Their Interconnections

        Khalid K. Naji,Murat Gunduz,Mohammad H. Falamarzi 대한토목학회 2022 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.26 No.9

Clients frequently utilize tendering to select contractors in the building business. The goal of this research is to identify, assess, and rank the critical elements in evaluating contact bids for the best-value procurement technique. There is a need to better assess the importance of factors in evaluation of tenders using their linkages between them. It differs from previous studies in considering the connections between these factors, facilitating a robust ranking and tendering evaluation. This study is unique in that it is the first to use an analytical network process (ANP) model to rank evaluation elements while taking into account their interdependencies to the best of authors’ knowledge. This study included a literature review, a survey of construction industry specialists, and the application of the ANP as a ranking method for the variables. According to our research, there are 31 criteria that are critical to the success and performance of construction projects. Technical, financial, and qualification variables are divided into three groups, with the ANP model indicating that financial aspects are the most relevant. The findings of the study demonstrated that financial stability was ranked first, followed by offered price, proposed delivery date, experience with similar projects, past history, qualifications of engineers and technical staff, warranty and after sales services. The last five factors included level of innovation, use of new technologies, staff training plans, environmental considerations, and the number of liquid assets. When evaluating their interdependencies and the effects they have on other factors, the ANP ranking revealed that several elements previously thought to be inconsequential are in fact significant.

Is There Anything Special with Intra-Arab Foreign Direct Investment?

( Khalid Sekkat ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 2014 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.29 No.1

The determinants of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows to Arab countries particularly vary depending on what the source country is, i.e., Arab or non-Arab countries. Estimation is conducted on a separate sample for source countries but with the same set of determinants. We found that intra-Arab FDI is much higher than what can be deduced from current empirical models. More strikingly, the determinants of Arab FDI inflows are influenced by the supplier. Human capital, quality of institutions, infrastructure and openness hardly affect intra-Arab inflows while they normally affect non-Arab inflows. Two possible explanations are proposed. One is that a large share of intra Arab FDI is provided by government or related entities which obey specific regional strategic considerations. The other is that cultural similarity allows Arab investors to use informal socio-cultural networks, and thus to be less sensitive to socalled FDI fundamental determinants than non-Arab investors.
