Christopher Eng is a legal officer with the Insolvency and Public Trustee's Office in Singapore. He had practiced for a number of years in insolvency law in Singapore's largest law firm, M/s Rajah & Tahn. He is involved in a number of law reform initiatives including the Omnibus Insolvency Bill. He is also an associate lecturer at PSB Academy of Singapore. He has won the Bronze Award in 2005 at the prestigious International Institute of Insolvency for his outstanding research work in cross-border insolvency.

무선 신체 영역 네트워크 (WBAN)는 블루투스 활성화 장치 및 PDA와 같은 작고 가벼운 무선 시스템 의 출현 에 의해 가능하게 되었다. 안테나 는 WBAN 시스템의 필수적인 부분입니다 및 기술적 요구 사항과 물리적 제약 여러 가지 에, 자신의 디자인 및 배치 의 주의 깊은 고려 가 필요하다. 의류 의 일부 는 건강 관리 응용 프로그램 에서 추적 및 네비게이션 등의 통신 기능을 제공하기 위해 본 논문 은 착용 할 수 있는 안테나 의 디자인을 제안하고 있다. 착용 할 수 있는 안테나의 기판은 착용 할 수 있도록 하기 위해서 경량, 낮은 유지 보수, 눈에 거슬리지 않는 작은 크기로 만들도록 섬유 재료로 만든다 본 논문은 안테나 디자인 WBAN 요구 사항을 만족 하는지 확인하기 위해 섬유/기판의 유형을 포함하여 착용 할 수 있는 안테나에 대한 다른 매개 변수의 영향을 조사한다. 안테나의특성 및 동작은 무선 표준 기술 및 시스템 요구 사항에 의해 설정된 사양 을 준수 할 필요가 있다. 이것은 다양한 유닛의 송신 및 수신 주파수 대역을 적절하게 선택 될 필요가 있다는 것을 의미한다. 인체에 노출 될 수 있는 힘의 레벨에 제한이 있기 때문에, 안테나 등의 RF 시스템의 구성 요소는 이러한 제한을 충족하도록 설계 되어야한다. 직접 전력 전송 에 영향을 미치는 안테나 이득, 안전 지침 내에 전력 레벨 을 보장 하는 중요한 매개 변수이고 설계에 가장 중요하다. WBAN 안테나 및 장치와 인체 사이의 전자기 상호 작용은 또한 탐색 할 것이다

Image-guided radiation therapy in lymphoma management

Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) is a process of incorporating imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Positron emission tomography (PET), and ultrasound (US) during radiation therapy (RT) to improve treatment accuracy. It allows real-time or near real-time visualization of anatomical information to ensure that the target is in its position as planned. In addition, changes in tumor volume and location due to organ motion during treatment can be also compensated. IGRT has been gaining popularity and acceptance rapidly in RT over the past 10 years, and many published data have been reported on prostate, bladder, head and neck, and gastrointestinal cancers. However, the role of IGRT in lymphoma management is not well defined as there are only very limited published data currently available. The scope of this paper is to review the current use of IGRT in the management of lymphoma. The technical and clinical aspects of IGRT, lymphoma imaging studies, the current role of IGRT in lymphoma management and future directions will be discussed.

Endogenous Structural Breaks and Real Exchange Rate Stationarity in Asia: Empirics and Theory

This paper reconsiders real exchange rate stationarity for six East Asian countries using Lee and Strazicich (2001, 2003)’s minimum Lagrangian Multiplier (LM) unit root test that accounts for two endogenously determined structural breaks. The result is mixed. We thus set up an open-economy New Keynesian model to understand the factors that cause trend breaks and to infer the mechanism that characterizes the nonstationary real exchange rates. We find that nominal depreciation rate, inflation differentials, and interest rate differentials are the sources of breaks. The strength of each source in changing the path of the real exchange rate is influenced by nominal rigidities and monetary policy reaction functions. Most interestingly, we show how a successfully implemented inflation-targeting monetary policy in conjunction with an endogenous currency risk premium can be the potential culprit that results in nonstationary real exchange rates.

Drug-herb interactions: Mechanisms involved and clinical implications of five commonly and traditionally used herbs

Herbal remedies are commonly used by patients worldwide. Because these herbal preparations share the same metabolic and transport proteins with prescribed medicines, the potential for a drug-herb interaction is substantial and is an issue of significant concern. This review paper summarizes drug-herb interactions involving inhibition or induction of cytochrome P450 enzymes, drug transporters as well as modulation of drug pharmacodynamics. An increasing number of in vitro and animal studies, case reports and clinical trials evaluating such interactions have been reported, and implications of these studies are discussed in this review. The most commonly implicated drugs in the interaction include anticoagulants, antiplatelets, immunosuppressants, anti-neoplastics, protease inhibitors, and some antidepressants. Pharmacokinetic and/or pharmacodynamic interactions of five commonly used herbal remedies (danshen, garlic, Ginkgo biloba, ginseng, and St John’s wort) with these drugs are presented, with focus of discussion being the potentials for interaction, their mechanisms and clinical implications. There is a necessity for adequate pharmacovigilance to be carried out in minimizing unanticipated but often preventable drug-herb interactions.

Improving Grammatical Accuracy in Thai Learners' Writing : Comparing Direct and Indirect Written Corrective Feedback

Written corrective feedback (WCF) is widely used to point students to the grammatical errors in their written work and help reduce them. This paper reports a quasi-experimental study that compared the effectiveness of direct and indirect teacher WCF in a Thai context. One hundred and twenty Thai students at two public universities in southern Thailand were assigned to write argumentative essays within a treatment period; each treatment had 60 students. The feedback was given by four ESL/EFL lecturers at the two universities. Grammatical aspects focused on were tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, singular/plural nouns, prepositions and adjectives/adverbs. Means for the number of errors were obtained at three points, namely, pretest, immediate posttest and delayed posttest. The findings revealed that time and WCF type as main effects showed differentiated results on all six grammatical aspects. Interaction effects between time and WCF were found for tenses and subject-verb agreement. For between-subjects effects, indirect WCF was more effective than direct WCF. For within-subjects effects, generally the differences in the mean values were significant between pretest and delayed posttest, but not between pretest and immediate posttest. These findings have implications for writing instruction and research in an ESL/EFL tertiary context.

Characteristics of Synthesized Red Cells Using Bovine Hemoglobin as Oxygen Carrier

The encapsulation of the purified bovine hemoglobin with phospholipids obtained from egg yolk was performed using a rotary vacuum evaporator. The prepared Hb-containing liposome (hemosome)had good properties as artificial red blood cell. The shape and size of the hemosomes were measured by a phase contrast microscope and image analyzer. The function of the hemosome as oxygen carrier was tested by measuring oxygen saturation curve with blood gas analyzer and infusing it into rats. The prepared hemosome was 1.184+0.423㎛ in diameter and round in shape. P_50 value of the hemosome solution was 28 mmHg. The synthesized red cells seem to function as oxygen carrier, because the severely bled rats were porlonged in their life by transfusion of the hemosome solution containing bovine hemoglobin.

Inventing a Moral Crisis and the Singapore State

This paper examines how the Singapore State views its citizenry as suffering from a moral crisis and the policies that it adopts in an attempt to avert this perceived crisis. There are four main areas where moral degeneration has supposedly occurred and all are linked to Singapore women. The main issues of state concern are: the failure of graduate women to marry; the single mother syndrome; Singapore women marrying Caucasian (known as the Pinkerton syndrome); and a decline in family values, reflected in the dilution of filial piety. This paper argues that the anxiety of the state in treating such social issues as moral crises reflects its desire to legitimize its position as an upholder of the ethical and moral basis of Singapore society.
