Vol.20 No.3

By exploring the concept of fairness and impartiality in press coverage, the study aims to suggest the measurement model based on the levels of journalistic objectivism (i.e., truth and balance) and subjectivism (i.e., factionalism, subjectivity and advocate). According to the results of the survey, journalists are more likely to put stress on objectivistic than subjectivistic approaches regardless of their affiliations and personal characteristics. However, Journalists who work in liberal media are more likely to agree on journalistic tendencies of factional news reports and suggest subjective views on issues. Taking into account affiliations of journalists, they evaluate that their news organizations lay much less stress on truth and balance of news reports, while more stress on factionalism and subjectivity of news reports. The results of the paired t-tests show that news organizations affiliated with journalists have the higher mean value of factionalism and the lower mean value of factionalism and the lower mean value of advocate than they have. It is also concluded that journalists’ personal characteristics are not significant in the five dimensions. Journalists evaluate the fundamental reason for partial news reports as political interests of news organizations affiliated with them, followed by external relations and internal relations.

Vol.49 No.1

Convergence in Journalism stirred the discussion about integrated newsroom to satisfy cross-media circumstance. Integrated newsroom can be the internal resource convergence in the news production system to maximize the capacity of limited numbers of reporters. Meanwhile, as audience's participation grow in the culture of media convergence, there is the external resource convergence to view audiences as a external resource and to get them engaged in the news production process. This study examined the integrated newsroom as a strategy of resource allocation in terms of journalism quality. Also, it dealt with the discussion to develop audience resource to create the new relationship between news organizations and audiences. Collaboration between news media and audience in the process of news production and distribution, which can be considered the external resource convergence, has the potential to add the new values associated with the factors of participatory journalism. This study explored the literature that contains both internal-external resources in order to take a balanced perspective and to gain a conceptual understanding of journalism convergence.

International Students’ Socialization and Social Support

Vol.24 No.2

A number of studies have examined the socialization of students, but few have focused on international students, who account for an increasingly large portion of the student body world wide. By considering large population of Chinese international students, this study examines Chinese students’ socialization in school and social support in South Korea and explores how their socialization and social support are influenced by their use of social networking sites (SNSs), the representative new media among young individuals. For this, we interviewed 10 Chinese students enrolled at Konkuk University (South Korea) to obtain qualitative data on how these students socialized in their new education environment and what social support they received in the country. The interview results indicate a low level of socialization for most of the interviewees. Their personal communities were generally limited to Chinese friends and classmates, and they engaged in no personal communication with their professors or Korean classmates. Most of the interviewees received support only from Chinese friends, although a few had some Korean friends who could provide them some support. We examined their SNS use and its effects on their socialization and social support. Most of the interviewees found SNSs to be useful for facilitating relationships with Chinese friends or classmates as well as for receiving emotional or cognitive support. In addition, their personality traits had considerable influence on their socialization and social support. Some interviewees wanted to make more Korean friends, whereas others did not consider them to be important. Some were stressed when they could not clearly express themselves or be integrated into the new society, whereas others were satisfied playing computer games at home by themselves.
