In this paper an elastic-plastic response has been developed to predict the pull-out behaviour of various hooked end fibres embedded in normal–high strength concretes. An elastic-plastic moment expression has been proposed to represent the partially plastic hinge formed during pull-out. The proposed formula has been incorporated into a frictional pulley force analysis in order to predict the applied loading at each stage of pull-out. This prediction accounts for the variation of geometrical and tensile properties of the fibres as well as concrete strength. The proposed model is validated against experimental pull-out results of various hooked end fibres.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Improving the efficiency of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for use in commercial fuel cells has been the subject of diverse synthetic research activities. However, due to their inferior catalytic performance and dispensability, there are still limitations to achieving breakthroughs regarding ORR catalytic activity using carbon nanomaterials, despite their high electron-transfer and mass-transport properties. In this study, we mimicked nature by using a biomineralization approach for controlling the growth of inorganic materials and demonstrated improved ORR values. The designed peptide, Hexcoil-Ala, is able to supramolecular assembly on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), leading to SWNTs that are well dispersed in aqueous solution. In order to direct gold nanoparticle (AuNP) nucleation sites, we substitute two residues in Hexcoil-Ala with cysteine to provide the mutated peptide, HexCoil-Ala-2Cys. This peptide affords a sophisticated, size-controlled, and well-dispersed arrangement of AuNPs. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy studies confirmed the homogeneously well-aligned distribution of nanosized AuNPs on the HexCoil-Ala-2Cys structure, along the direction of SWNT axis. The (AuNPs/P-SWNT) composite in water provides dispersed and stable metallic nanoparticles of electrostatically modified Au through synergistic effects involving the peptide. Consequently, this catalyst exhibits improved ORR performance compared to bulk gold and even, in case of number of electrons (<I>n</I>) transferred, higher than the number of Pt/C. X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopies reveal the details of the electronic interactions among the components of the AuNP/P-SWNT composite, and how they facilitate the four-electron reaction pathway. This study provides valuable information for the optimization of catalyst synthesis and precise particle-size control, leading to stable, water-dispersive composites, with improved electronic properties for enhanced ORR performance in fuel cells.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We used designed peptide to direct nucleation sites of gold nanoparticles. </LI> <LI> The designed peptide offers size-controlled and well-dispersed arrangement of AuNPs. </LI> <LI> Also, the superstructure of AuNPs was modified electrostatistically by the peptide. </LI> <LI> It exhibits improved ORR performance with higher number of electrons(<I>n</I>) transferred. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>In this present work, we describe improved electrocatalytic reaction of directly gold nanoparticle assembled superstructures using the programmed supramolecular protein assembly.</P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Backgrounds/Aims: Associating Liver Partition and Portal Vein Ligation for Staged Hepatectomy (ALPPS) has generated controversy due to high morbidity and mortality. We present our series of patients with 30-40% parenchymal transection and minimal hilar dissection. Methods: Patients who had partial ALPPS between April 2015 and April 2016 were included. Patients with colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) had their future liver remnants (FLR) cleared with metastasectomies. The liver was divided along the future line of transection to 30-40%, right portal vein was stapled and divided without extensive hilar dissection, with minimal handling of right liver, which was not mobilised. We preserved the middle hepatic vein. Data were collected prospectively for hypertrophy of the FLR, morbidity and mortality. Results: Among the 8 patients (age 25-68) investigated, one patient with cholangiocarcinoma had portal vein embolization prior to partial ALPPS. All patients completed two stages with adequate FLR hypertrophy at a median of 28 days. No mortality was found. The median length of stay after stages 1 and 2 was 9 and 9.6 days, respectively. The median increase in FLR was 38%. Conclusions: A limited transection of 30-40%, minimal hilar dissection and longer wait between stages yielded adequate FLR hypertrophy with low morbidity and no mortality.

Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) is a useful technique for measuring the elastic properties of materials. In this study, two experimental approaches for performing RUS are experimentally analyzed and compared: 1) contact transduction using piezoelectric transducers (PZT) and 2) laser transduction using pulse laser excitation and laser interferometric detection. A single Zircaloy sample cut from a nuclear pressure tube was used for this study. By virtue of the non-contact nature, the quality factor, Q, for laser RUS is shown to be higher than the contact RUS. In addition, the probe beam for laser-RUS can be scanned to form a 2D image of each vibrational mode, which in turn enables unique mode identification. These defining characteristics of laser-RUS enable straightforward discrimination of closely spaced resonant modes and provide key advantages for improving the resolution of resonant ultrasound spectroscopy.

Data packet disorder is inevitable in discrete-time networked control systems, which however has been ignored in most literature to date. This work investigates the cause and the negative effects of data packet disorder in discrete-time networked control systems, and a compensation scheme is proposed to deal with these negative effects. This analysis shows that most existing works in the related areas have assumed unrealistic characteristics of the communication network and thus further improvements within this new framework are necessary. For this purpose the closed-loop system with the use of the proposed compensation scheme is mathematically modeled as a Markov jump systems, and stochastic stability and stabilization results are then obtained. Numerical examples illustrate the negative effects caused by data packet disorder and also the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
