Use of Amplatz® canine duct occluder for closing a patent ductus arteriosus in a small-sized dog

A 2-year-old intact female pomeranian dog presented dyspnea, labored breathing, cough, exercise intolerance, machinery heart murmur, and precordial thrill. A left-to-right patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) was diagnosed based on two-dimensional echocardiography, thoracic radiography, electrocardiography, and blood work. An angiography was performed to accurately evaluate the size and shape of the duct. An interventional approach for transcatheterial occlusion of the PDA was achieved using an Amplatz® Canine Duct Occluder (ACDO), which is a commercially available ductal occluding device. Due to the limited size of the dog’s femoral artery, a device smaller [125% of minimal ductal diameter (MDD); recommended size: 150~200% of MDD] than recommended was mounted. After placement of the ACDO, precordial thrill and continuous heart murmur disappeared, and the patient was discharged the next day after stabilization with O2 supply. Upon follow up examination, dyspnea, labored breathing, cough, exercise intolerance, and cardiomegaly were improved with no complications after the procedure. The ACDO was well maintained in position. This case represents successful clinical application of the Amplatz® Canine Duct Occluder to achieve closure of a PDA using a slightly smaller device than the recommended size.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Mesoporous nickel and cobalt hydroxide composites are directly grown onto 3D macro-porous Ni foam as a binder-free electrode for supercapacitors by using the successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method. This method is the cheapest and simplest among several deposition processes for supercapacitor applications. An as-obtained porous NiCo(OH)<SUB>2</SUB> electrode exhibits a remarkable specific capacity (1113.6 mAh g<SUP>−1</SUP> at a current density of 3 A g<SUP>−1</SUP>) and excellent cycling stability (85.62% capacity retention after 5000 cycles). Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor assembled with NiCo(OH)<SUB>2</SUB> as a positive electrode and graphene as a negative electrode shows a high energy density of 20.07 W h kg<SUP>−1</SUP> at a power density of 2302.73 W kg<SUP>−1</SUP> and excellent cycling stability (76.46% retention after 5000 cycles). Re-description of Sea Spider Cilunculus armatus (Pycnogonida: Ammotheidae) from Korea

The sea spider genus Cilunculus Loman, 1908 comprises 33 species having short chelifores, separate lateral processes, and a hood structure on the cephalic segment. A pycnogonid species, Cilunculus armatus (Böhm, 1879), was collected from Baekdo Island and Chujado Island, Korea. This species is characterized by having a hood structure on the cephalic segment, separate lateral processes, a low ocular tubercle without eyes, and 3-segmented chelifores. In the examined material, chela shape, arrangement of compound spines on strigilis, and number of heel spines at propodus were different from the previous literatures. Here, we examined C. armatus collected in Korean waters and provided illustrations and pictures in detail.

Compact feature hashing for machine learning based malware detection

Machine learning can detect variant malware files that can evade signature-based detection. Feature hashing is used to convert features into a fixed-length vector. In this paper, we study the appropriate vector size for feature hashing for a large dataset of malware files. Through exhaustive experiments on more than 280,000 real malware and benign files, we find for the first time that the default vector size of current feature hashing practices is unnecessarily large. We experimentally explore the appropriate vector size, which not only reduces memory space by 70% but also increases the detection accuracy, compared with the state-of-the-art scheme.
