Globalization and the Scrambling Process of Catching Up in Mexico
Clemente Ruiz Duran 서울대학교 경제연구소 2019 Seoul journal of economics Vol.32 No.1
In the last 50 years, Mexico’s manufacturing growth has been fostered, although its competitiveness has relied on the low wage paradigm. In this article, the country’s immersion in globalization is analyzed, thereby departing from the effects derived by the oil crisis that forced the country to leave the trap of natural resources to generate productive value chains through the economic opening boosted by the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and subsequently, by the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Such economic opening allowed the development of global value chains through original equipment manufacturing in the automotive, electronics, pharmaceutical, and medical devices industries. However, this process has been characterized by low investment coefficients and scarce innovation compared with Korea, Malaysia and China, due to the lack of an institutional framework that could have promoted innovation to allow the country to overcome the middle-income trap.

Uriel Clemente-Gutierrez,German Esteban Sanchez Morales,Paulina Moctezuma Velazquez,Alexandra Rueda de Leon Aguirr,Jesus Morales Maza,Ismael Dominguez-Rosado,Heriberto Medina-Franco 한국간담췌외과학회 2019 Annals of hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery Vol.23 No.3
Backgrounds/Aims: The frequency of acute cholecystitis reported in neutropenic patients is between 0.4-1.65%. Clinical manifestations differ from general population as well as clinical approach, diagnosis and treatment. The aim of this work is to describe clinical characteristics, diagnostic approach, and outcomes of patients with hematological diseases that presented with neutropenia and fever associated with acute cholecystitis in a tertiary referral hospital. Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients with diagnosis of neutropenia and fever associated with acute cholecystitis in the period between January 2000 and January 2017. Quantitative variables were analyzed with mean and standard deviation, and qualitative variables with frequency and percentage. Results: During the study period, 2007 patients presented with neutropenia and fever. Twelve of them (0.59%) had associated acute cholecystitis. The most common hematologic disease among these patients was lymphoblastic leukemia. Acute acalculous cholecystitis was diagnosed in 6 cases (50%). Eleven patients (91.6%) had a severe presentation and cholecystostomy was performed in 9 (75%) cases. The main cause of mortality was septic shock (33.3%). Conclusions: Treatment of acute cholecystitis in patients with neutropenia must be individualized. Cholecystostomy should be considered as a bridge therapy for an interval cholecystectomy.
Automatic Tools of Match Analysis: Inspecting Soccer Team`s Dispersion
( Filipe Manuel Clemente ),( Micael Santos Couceiro ),( Fernando Manuel Lourenco Martins ),( Ajit Korgaokar ) 한국스포츠정책과학원(구 한국스포츠개발원) 2012 International Journal of Applied Sports Sciences Vol.24 No.2
The contracting-expanding soccer teams` relationship is one of the most important dynamic behaviors of the game. Therefore, a soccer game was analyzed using the centroid and stretch index method, while recording the team`s ball possession status (with or without ball possession). The correlation test suggest an inverse relationship between opposing teams (r (1508)=- 0.054) during all game. When considering ball possession by the teams, the results of the stretch index confirm that there are statistical differences with a small effect between the moments with and without possession of the ball for team B (F(1; 1506)=22.777; p-value≤0.001; =0.015; Power=0.998). Therefore, it was possible to confirm that the contracting -expanding relationship is an intrinsic behaviour of a soccer game in relation to ball possession.
Guanxi in Chinese Commerce: Informal Enforcement in Spanish Philippines
Tina S. Clemente 서울대학교 경제연구소 2013 Seoul journal of economics Vol.26 No.2
How did Chinese merchants remedy opportunism in a prevailing scenario of weak state enforcement during the Spanish period in the Philippines? The paper attempts to analyze 19th century historical accounts in elucidating how the utilization of guanxi sanctions provides useful insights in addressing the gap between state enforcement and property rights violation. These sanctions constitute informal enforcement among Chinese merchants based on personalistic ties. With credible enforcement, Chinese principals could manage networks that facilitated merchandize trade throughout the Philippines. By the 19th century, Chinese networks consisting of Chinese merchants and agents became crucial in large scale wholesale and retail trade.
Tina S. Clemente 경남대학교 극동문제연구소 2020 ASIAN PERSPECTIVE Vol.44 No.2
The article considers how Korean historical drama can enrich the discourse of development and change. The study interrogates Cold War legacies in development thinking in the Philippines entrenched by US education and pop culture and contextualizes Korean drama, a representation of counter- dominant cultural flows, within cultural flows in Asia, the reception of the dramas in Asia, and patronage and influence in the Philippines. Focusing on the historical genre of Korean drama in particular, a cultural negotiation of Cold War influenced-development perspectives in the Philippines is problematized. Unpacking the complex content in Korean historical drama through intertextual analysis provokes a critical elucidation of notions of development and change and underscores interdiscursive utility for the development discourse in the Philippines.
Monitoring a steel building using GPS sensors
Fabio Casciati,Clemente Fuggini 국제구조공학회 2011 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.7 No.5
To assess the performance of a structure requires the measurement of global and relative displacements at critical points across the structure. They should be obtained in real time and in all weather condition. A Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) could satisfy the last two requirements. The American Global Position System (GPS) provides long term acquisitions with sampling rates sufficient to track the displacement of long period structures. The accuracy is of the order of sub-centimetres. The steel building which hosts the authors’ laboratory is the reference case-study within this paper. First a comparison of data collected by GPS sensor units with data recorded by tri-axial accelerometers is carried out when dynamic vibrations are induced in the structure by movements of the internal bridge-crane. The elaborations from the GPS position readings are then compared with the results obtained by a Finite Element (FE) numerical simulation. The purposes are: i) to realize a refinement of the structural parameters which characterize the building and ii) to outline a suitable way for processing GPS data toward structural monitoring.
Combining GPS and accelerometers’ records to capture torsional response of cylindrical tower
Raed J. AlSaleh,Clemente Fuggini 국제구조공학회 2020 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.25 No.1
Researchers up to date have introduced several Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) techniques with varying advantages and drawbacks for each. Satellite positioning systems (GPS, GLONASS and GALILEO) based techniques proved to be promising, especially for high natural period structures. Particularly, the GPS has proved sufficient performance and reasonable accuracy in tracking real time dynamic displacements of flexible structures independent of atmospheric conditions, temperature variations and visibility of the monitored object. Tall structures are particularly sensitive to oscillations produced by different sources of dynamic actions; such as typhoons. Wind forces induce in the structure both longitudinal and perpendicular displacements with respect to the wind direction, resulting in torsional effects, which are usually more complex to be detected. To efficiently track the horizontal rotations of the in-plane sections of such flexible structures, two main issues have to be considered: a suitable sensor topology (i.e., location, installation, and combination of sensors), and the methodology used to process the data recorded by sensors. This paper reports the contributions of the measurements recorded from dual frequency GPS receivers and uni-axial accelerometers in a full-scale experimental campaign. The Canton tower in Guangzhou-China is the case study of this research, which is instrumented with a long-term structural health monitoring system deploying both accelerometers and GPS receivers. The elaboration of combining the obtained rather long records provided by these two types of sensors in detecting the torsional behavior of the tower under ambient vibration condition and during strong wind events is discussed in this paper. Results confirmed the reliability of GPS receivers in obtaining the dynamic characteristics of the system, and its ability to capture the torsional response of the tower when used alone or when they are combined with accelerometers integrated data.
Undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma of the liver in adult patient
Sanchez-Morales German Esteban,Clemente-Gutierrez Uriel Emili,Alvarez-Bautista Francisco Emm,Santes-Jasso Oscar,Carpinteyro-Espin Paulina,Mercado Miguel Angel 한국간담췌외과학회 2018 Annals of hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery Vol.22 No.3
Primary sarcomas of the liver are unusual neoplasms developing in adults. They constitute a heterogeneous group of neoplasms including undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma. Patients usually present with an abdominal mass and abdominal pain. Case 1: A 53-year-old woman presented with abdominal pain. Computed tomography showed an occupying mass in the right lobule and an intra-auricular multi-lobulated mass suggestive of a secondary deposit. Biopsy of the hepatic lesion revealed undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma. Despite radiotherapy and supportive measures, her overall status progressively worsened until cardiac arrest. Case 2: A 41-year-old woman presented with hepatomegaly. Abdominal imaging showed cystic lesions in the right hepatic lobule with multiple septae. The patient underwent extended right hepatectomy and a histopathological study reported high-grade undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma. Two years after surgery, a new cystic lesion in the surgical site was recorded and chemotherapy was scheduled. The lesion remained stable for three years when disease progression was observed and second-line chemotherapy was initiated. Although undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma of the liver has poor prognosis, early diagnosis is essential to increase the chances of survival. Currently, surgical resection and chemotherapy are the primary treatment modalities.
