Black ginseng is derived from a repeated steaming/drying process; however, the black ginseng manufacturing process is not well established. To determine the steaming and drying optimum conditions for producing high levels of biologically active substances such as acidic polysaccharides, ginsenoside Rg3, and polyphenols and low levels of benzopyrene, response surface methodology was used with temperature and time as independent variables. As steaming temperature/time increased, acid polysaccharide, polyphenol, and benzopyrene content increased; ginsenoside Rg3 levels increased with steaming time at temperatures ${\geq}100^{\circ}C$. As drying temperature/time increased, ginsenoside Rg3, benzopyrene, and acidic polysaccharide content also increased. These substances showed a nonlinear canonical form, whereas the phenolic component showed a linear canonical form. Optimum conditions were determined to be steaming at $113.04^{\circ}C$ for 18 h and drying at $100^{\circ}C$ for 8.03 h, resulting in 0.75 mg/g ginsenoside Rg3, 13.72 mg% acidic polysaccharide, 0.26 ppb benzopyrene, and 3.24 mg% polyphenol.

Background: We investigated the current characteristics of a thin-film Ag electrode on a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond. The CVD diamond is widely recognized as a radiation detection material because of its high tolerance against high radiation, stable response to various dose rates, and good sensitivity. Additionally, thin-film Ag has been widely used as an electrode with high electrical conductivity. Materials and Methods: Considering these properties, the thin-film Ag electrode was deposited onto CVD diamonds with varied deposition thicknesses (${\fallingdotseq}50/98/152/257nm$); subsequently, the surface thickness, surface roughness, leakage current, and photo-current were characterized. Results and Discussion: The leakage current was found to be very low, and the photo-current output signal was observed as stable for a deposited film thickness of 98 nm; at this thickness, a uniform and constant surface roughness of the deposited thin-film Ag electrode were obtained. Conclusion: We found that a CVD diamond radiation detector with a thin-film Ag electrode deposition thickness close to 100 nm exhibited minimal leakage current and yielded a highly stable output signal.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to validate the effectiveness of the newly designed (new) ultrasound device by comparing it with conventional (old) device through electromyography (EMG) signals, grip force and task time. Background: The prevalence rate of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) among sonographers is approximately four times higher that that of normal people. The awkward posture and over-exertion of upper extremities are the main risk factors for WMSDs. To reduce these risk factors, ergonomic designs such as adjustable control panels and transducer stations have been introduced for new ultrasound device. Method: A total of 10 obstetricians were participated in this study. To compare the scan stress between two devices (old and new), two types of experiments were performed: (1) Scanning task was carried out to measure muscle activity and grip force during scanning operations. (2) Positioning task was performed to quantify the load while obstetricians were moving the devices. Results: The new device showed significantly less muscle activities and grip forces than old device in scanning task. The task time of the new device was significantly shorter than that of the old one. Conclusion: Overall, the performance of the new device was evaluated more positive than that of old device. Application: Methods and findings of this study could be used to evaluate existing and newly developed ultrasound devices.
