Epidemiological Characteristics of Norovirus Outbreaks in Shenyang from 2017 to 2021

        Qi Ying,Dong Xinxin,Cheng Xiaowei,Xu Han,Wang Jin,Wang Bing,Chen Ye,Sun Baijun,Zhang Linlin,Yao Yan 한국미생물학회 2023 The journal of microbiology Vol.61 No.4

Norovirus is one of the leading causes of acute gastroenteritis outbreaks worldwide. This study aimed to identify the epidemiological characteristics of norovirus outbreaks and to provide evidence for public health entities. Specimens and epidemiological survey data were collected to determine if there were differences in the attack rate of norovirus in terms of the year, season, transmission route, exposure setting, and region and to determine whether there were relationships between the reporting interval, the number of illnesses in a single outbreak and the duration of the outbreak. Norovirus outbreaks were reported throughout the year, with seasonal characteristics (i.e., high rates in spring and winter). Among all regions in Shenyang with the exception of Huanggu and Liaozhong, norovirus outbreaks had been reported, and the primary genotype was GII.2[P16]. Vomiting was the most common symptom. The main places of occurrence were childcare institutions and schools. The person-to-person route was the main transmission route. The median duration of norovirus was 3 days (IQR [interquartile range]: 2–6 days), the median reporting interval was 2 days (IQR: 1–4 days), the median number of illnesses in a single outbreak was 16 (IQR: 10–25); there was a positive correlation between these parameters. Norovirus surveillance and genotyping studies still need to be further strengthened to increase knowledge regarding the pathogens and their variant characteristics, to better characterize the patterns of norovirus outbreaks and to provide information for outbreak prevention. Norovirus outbreaks should be detected, reported and handled early. Public health entities and the government should develop corresponding measures for different seasons, transmission routes, exposure settings, and regions.

Early Plasma Circulating Tumor DNA as a Potential Biomarker of Disease Recurrence in Non-metastatic Prostate Cancer

        Xiaochen Fei,Xinxing Du,Yiming Gong,Jiazhou Liu,Liancheng Fan,Jiayi Wang,Yanqing Wang,Yinjie Zhu,Jiahua Pan,Baijun Dong,Wei Xue 대한암학회 2023 Cancer Research and Treatment Vol.55 No.3

Purpose In non-metastatic prostate cancer (nmPCa) setting, it is important to early identify the patients at risk of biochemical recurrence (BCR) for immediate postoperative intervention. Our study aimed to evaluate the potential clinical utility of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) for predicting disease recurrence.Materials and Methods This real-world observational study evaluated 161 cases of nmPCa undergoing next-generation sequencing at our institution. A total of 139 ctDNA samples and 31 biopsied tumor tissue underwent genomic profiling. The study endpoint was BCR after radical prostatectomy. Relationships between the ctDNA status and the biochemical progression-free survival (bPFS) were analyzed by log-rank test and multivariate Cox regression. Results Of 161 enrolled patients, 19 (11.8%) harbored deleterious alterations in NCOR2, followed by BRCA2 (3.7%), ATR (2.5%), and CDK12 (2.5%). Of available pre-operative blood samples (n=139), ctDNA was detectable in 91 (65.5%). Until last follow-up, 56 of 68 patients (85.3%) with detectable ctDNA had achieved BCR, whereas only eight of 39 patients (20.5%) with undetectable ctDNA had achieved BCR. Patients who had undetectable ctDNA experienced significantly longer bPFS compared with those who had detectable ctDNA (not available vs. 8.2 months; hazard ratio, 0.14; p < 0.01). Pre-operative ctDNA status was a significant prognostic factor of disease recurrence. Conclusion Pre-operative ctDNA detection could identify patients at high risk of recurrence and has the potential to inform immediate postoperative interventions, but these approaches remain to be validated in prospective studies. ctDNA studies can provide insights into accurate monitoring and precise treatment rather than simply following routine clinical care.

The effects of ENSO under negative AO phase on spring dust activity over northern China: an observational investigation

        Lee, Yun Gon,Kim, Jhoon,Ho, Chang‐,Hoi,An, Soon‐,Il,Cho, Hi‐,Ku,Mao, Rui,Tian, Baijun,Wu, Dong,Lee, Jae N.,Kalashnikova, Olga,Choi, Yunsoo,Yeh, Sang‐,Wook John Wiley Sons, Ltd 2015 International journal of climatology Vol.35 No.6

ABSTRACT

The effects of El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) under negative Arctic Oscillation (AO) phase on the Asian dust activity are investigated for springs of the period 1961–2002. The spring dust index (DI) describing the monthly frequencies of three types of dust events (e.g. dust storm, blowing dust, and floating dust) exhibits a significant increase in the years of negative AO phase (hereafter AO−) and El Niño, compared with that in the years of AO− and La Niña. Averaged over all observation stations, the spring DI (49.7) during the El Niño/AO− years is higher by 11.4% or 29.8% than that (38.3) during the La Niña/AO− years. We suggest possible physical mechanism that the anomalous large‐scale environments associated with AO− and El Niño are more effective to provide favourable conditions to enhance Asian dust activity. During the El Niño/AO− years, meridional gradients of pressure and temperature over the dust source regions are significantly enhanced by decreasing the geopotential height and warming air temperature that originated from the north and south of source regions, respectively, under the influence of AO− and El Niño. These also intensify the zonal wind shear and atmospheric baroclinicity, thereby producing enhanced cyclogenesis and dust occurrences over the major source regions. At the same time, dust transport paths with the stronger westerly winds are developed by the combined constraints of anomalous cyclone over the Siberia and the Mongolia and anomalous anticyclone over the western North Pacific, and thus strengthen dust transport to the downwind regions.
