<P>A facile approach was employed for the preparation of stable luminescent nanocomposites of CdS quantum dots (QDs) and polyacrylamide (PAM) through the cross coupling chemistry. Initially, CdS QDs were synthesized in a well controlled manner using 3-mercaptopropionic acid as a capping agent. Then, carboxylic acid groups on CdS QDs were chemically incorporated into PAM matrices with the assistance of 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimide hydrochloride and N-hydroxysulfosuccinimide coupling agents. FT-IR analysis was used to investigate the chemical incorporation of CdS QDs in PAM matrices via the covalent protocol. The XPS elemental mapping studies further suggested the formation of CdS-PAM nanocomposites. FE-SEM and TEM images were engaged to study the morphologies, and distribution of CdS QDs in the PAM networks. The physical structure of the CdS-PAM nanocomposites was investigated by XRD analysis. Thermal stability of the nanocomposites was observed to be enhanced in compare to PAM as evidenced from TGA data. The UV-vis and photoluminescence studies of the CdS-PAM nanocomposites suggested their promising optical applications.</P>

<P>Forkhead box (FOX) proteins are multifaceted transcription factors that are significantly implicated in cancer, with various critical roles in biological processes. Herein, we provide an overview of several key members of the FOXA, FOXC, FOXM1, FOXO and FOXP subfamilies. Important pathophysiological processes of FOX transcription factors at multiple levels in a context-dependent manner are discussed. We also specifically summarize some major aspects of FOX transcription factors in association with cancer research such as drug resistance, tumor growth, genomic alterations or drivers of initiation. Finally, we suggest that targeting FOX proteins may be a potential therapeutic strategy to combat cancer.</P>

<P>ZnO nanoparticles were covalently wrapped by polystyrene (PS) through surface thiol-lactam initiated radical polymerization using the grafting from approach. The surface of ZnO nanoparticles was initially modified by 3-mercapto propyltrimethoxysilane to afford thiol functionalized ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-SH). The controlled radical polymerization of styrene (St) was subsequently accomplished by using an initiating system of ZnO-SH and butyrolactam. FT-IR, XPS, XRD, TGA, DSC, TEM and DLS were employed to investigate the chemical structure, morphology, thermal properties, the size and size distribution of nanocomposites. The dispersibility of ZnO nanoparticles was observed to be significantly improved upon functionalization by PS brushes. The controlled nature of the surface initiated thiol-lactam aided polymerization of St from the ZnO nanoparticles surface was confirmed by GPC analysis.</P>

This paper demonstrates a systematic study of the synthesis and characterization of the hybrid of Mg-Al layer double hydroxides (LDHs), poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), and terbium ions (Tb3+). The hybrid LDH-g-PCL-Tb3+-1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) was prepared by the combination of ring opening polymerization (ROP), click chemistry, and coordination chemistry. First, LDHs with a molar ratio of Mg/Al=2 were prepared by the co-precipitation method, which was subsequently functionalized with (3-chloropropyl) trimethoxysilane in order to introduce azide groups through the reaction of chlorine with sodium azide. Meanwhile, the acetylene functionalized PCL was prepared by ROP of ε-CL, followed by esterification of the hydroxyl groups using succinic anhydride. The click reaction of alkyne-PCL and N3-LDHs successfully afforded LDH-g-PCL, which was coordinated with Tb3+ ions in the presence of Phen. The structure and properties of the nanohybrids were investigated by FT-IR, XPS, EDS, SEM, and TGA analyses. The data indicate the coordination of Tb3+ ions with LDH-g-PCL nanohybrids. The content of Tb3+ ions in the LDH-g-PCL-Tb3+-Phen complex was calculated to be 8.7% (w/w). The LDH-g-PCL-Tb3+-Phen complexes showed four emission bands with high fluorescence intensity centered at 489nm (5D4→7F6), 546nm (5D4→7F5), 586nm (5D4→7F4) and 623nm (5D4→7F3) with excitation at 328nm (3F6→5G6). The stability of LDH-g-PCL-Tb3+-Phen complexes under UV irradiation was high, and no leaching effect was observed.

Estuarine sediments are frequently polluted with hydrocarbons from fuel spills and industrial wastes. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are components of these contaminants that tend to accumulate in the sediment due to their low aqueous solubility, low volatility, and high affinity for particulate matter. The toxic, recalcitrant, mutagenic, and carcinogenic nature of these compounds may require aggressive treatment to remediate polluted sites effectively. In petroleum-contaminated sediments near a petrochemical industry in Gwangyang Bay, Korea, in situ PAH concentrations ranged from 10 to 2,900 ${\mu}g/kg$ dry sediment. To enhance the biodegradation rate of PAHs under anaerobic conditions, sediment samples were amended with biostimulating agents alone or in combination: nitrogen and phosphorus in the form of slow-release fertilizer (SRF), lactate, yeast extract (YE), and Tween 80. When added to the sediment individually, all tested agents enhanced the degradation of PAHs, including naphthalene, acenaphthene, anthracene, fluorene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, chrysene, and benzo [a] pyrene. Moreover, the combination of SRF, Tween 80, and lactate increased the PAH degradation rate 1.2-8.2 times above that of untreated sediment (0.01-10 ${\mu}g$ PAH/ kg dry sediment/day). Our results indicated that in situ contaminant PAHs in anoxic sediment, including high molecular weight PAHs, were degraded biologically and that the addition of stimulators increased the biodegradation potential of the intrinsic microbial populations. Our results will contribute to the development of new strategies for in situ treatment of PAH-contaminated anoxic sediments.

<P>Novel copolymers consisting of poly(N-isopropylaminoethyl-co-6-hydroxyhexyl aspartamide) and poly (N-isopropylaminoethyl-co-hexyl aspartamide) were prepared from polysuccinimide, which was the thermal polycondensation product of L-aspartic acid, via a ring-opening reaction with 6-amino-L-hexanol (AH) or hexylamine (HA) and N-isopropylethylenediamine at different ratios. The copolymers, containing 75–90 mol % of AH and 35–45 mol % of HA, produced thermoresponsive polymers through their lower critical solution temperatures (LCSTs) in aqueous solution. We could control the LCST could be controlled by modifying the hydrophobic–hydrophilic balance by changing the content of AH or HA. The pH dependencies of the LCST were opposite in these two different copolymer systems. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008</P>

Last year at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee there was a conference about the theory of syntax. Fourteen different theories of syntax wre discussed at this conference. The aim of the conference was to see if there could be some measure of agreement about syntactic theory. I did not attend the conference but I am told that at the end of the conference there were still fourteen theories of syntax, maybe even more. I like to look behind disagreements about details and notice agreements that were sometimes apparent in the heat of discussions and battle. I don't know about Korean linguists but in America linguists love to argue, and it is very hard for many linguists to say, "Yes", when someone says, "Well, you really agree with me, don't you?" Then they usually say, "No." There is a story about Noam Chomsky, who, I think, is perhaps most argumentative of all. He was giving a lecture at a university in Canada and someone in the audience got up and said, "Well, I agree with you because of this and this...," and Noam Chomsky immediately said, "No, you don't."
