Sphingosine Kinase: Biochemical and Cellular Regulation and Role in Disease
Taha, Tarek Assad,Hannun, Yusuf Awni,Obeid, Lina Marie Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biol 2006 Journal of biochemistry and molecular biology Vol.39 No.2
Sphingolipids have emerged as molecules whose metabolism is regulated leading to generation of bioactive products including ceramide, sphingosine, and sphingosine-1-phosphate. The balance between cellular levels of these bioactive products is increasingly recognized to be critical to cell regulation; whereby, ceramide and sphingosine cause apoptosis and growth arrest phenotypes, and sphingosine-1-phosphate mediates proliferative and angiogenic responses. Sphingosine kinase is a key enzyme in modulating the levels of these lipids and is emerging as an important and regulated enzyme. This review is geared at mechanisms of regulation of sphingosine kinase and the coming to light of its role in disease.

Brown rust or leaf rust is one of the most important diseases of wheat occurring almost in all wheat-producing regions and reduces crop yield. In order to produce resistant cultivars, it is necessary to identify resistance genes in different germplasms and combine them in (a) suitable stock(s). To identify the presence of the leaf rust resistance genes using STS and SCAR markers, 83 Iranian wheat genotypes, Lr near-isogenic lines in Thatcher (positive controls), and the cultivar Thatcher (negative control) were used. After growing plants in the greenhouse, DNA was extracted by SDS method. Following that, polymerse chain reaction was performed for the markers of the resistance genes Lr9, Lr26, Lr28, Lr34, and Lr35 which amplified 1,100, 1,100, 378, 150, and 900 bp bands, respectively. Based on the results, the resistance genes Lr9 and Lr35 were only present in the positive controls. The resistance gene Lr26 was only detected in four cultivars; Arta, Pishtaz, Shiroodi, and Falat, and the gene Lr34 was present in six cultivars (Akbari, Bam, Tajan, Khazar 1, Sistan and Niknezhad). The Lr28 primer amplified a band of the same size in all genotypes even the negative control and therefore the presence/absence of this gene could not be validated. These results indicate the necessity for designing a specific primer for Lr28. In general, only the genes Lr26 and Lr34 were present in some genotypes. The genes Lr9 and Lr35 were not present in this collection and as based on rust surveys, no virulence has been detected for Lr9 and Lr28, so they could be transferred to suitable lines from donor sources.

Development of Maghemite Glass Fibre Nanocomposite for Adsorptive Removal of Methylene Blue
Muhammad Azeem Ashraf,Jakub Wiener,Assad Farooq,Jana Saskova,Muhammad Tayyab Noman 한국섬유공학회 2018 Fibers and polymers Vol.19 No.8
Maghemite glass fibre nanocomposite with excellent magnetic and adsorption properties was successfully developed from nontoxic and eco-friendly reagents by thermal decomposition approach. The developed nanocomposite was utilized in adsorption of methylene blue which follows Freundlich adsorption isotherm. The excellent value of adsorption capacity (51.31 mg g-1) as compared to other adsorbents recommends its potential role for adsorption phenomenon in multiple applications. The developed nanocomposite can be recycled and reused easily. Surface and other functional characteristics of developed nanocomposite were determined through scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, raman spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer. The obtained results revealed that maghemite glass nanocomposite is a potential tool that can be utilized in waste water treatments.

Using pyrene as the enrichment nutrient, a bacterial strain10PY1A, was isolated by enrichment culture from oil-contaminatedsea sand of Arabian Gulf in Saudi Arabia, and this strainbelongs to the species Idiomarina piscisalsi, based on 16SRNA gene sequence analysis. The genome of I. piscisalsi strain10PY1A contains 2,346 protein-coding sequences and an averageGC content of 47.4% in its chromosome (2.59 Mbp). Genesencoding proteins related to the degradation of pyrene wereexisted in the strain 10PY1A genome, indicating that this straincan be used to degrade polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons inoil-contaminated marine flora and soil.
Development of a 3D Color Diagram for Improved Visual Grading System of Cotton
Nayab Khan,Michael Vik,Farida Irshad,Bekir Yildirim,Assad Farooq,Muhammad Azeem Ashraf 한국섬유공학회 2023 Fibers and polymers Vol.24 No.1
The international trade of cotton is based on color and trash, which can be assessed by different methods. Although thereare so many instruments in the market to measure the color of cotton, but still now, the visual grading of cotton color is considered to be the most impressive method. Cotton-growing countries have professionally trained persons to grade the colorof cotton according to international standards. The disagreement between visual and instrumental grading is a big problemin the industry. In this research work, an improved method of visual grading system was developed, and the color diagramis represented in different color spaces.
A Novel Discrete-time Nonlinear Model Predictive Control Based on State Space Model
Carlos Sotelo,Antonio Favela-Contreras,Francisco Beltrán-Carbajal,Graciano Dieck-Assad,Pedro Rodríguez-Cañedo,David Sotelo 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2018 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.16 No.6
This paper proposes a novel finite dimensional discrete-time Nonlinear Model Predictive Control. This technique is based on discrete-time state-space models, Taylor series expansion for prediction and performance index optimization. Furthermore, the technique extends the concept of the Lie derivative for the discrete time case using Euler backwards method. The performance validation for the discrete-time Nonlinear Model Predictive Control uses the simulation of a single-link flexible joint robot and the inverted pendulum. Comparison of the proposed finite dimensional discrete-time Nonlinear Model Predictive Control technique with Feedback Linearization Control is also discussed. Analytical and numerical results show excellent performances for both, the single-link flexible joint and inverted pendulum controllers using the proposed discrete-time Nonlinear Model Predictive Control technique.
