Genetic (Co)variance Components for Body Weight and Body Measurements in Makooei Sheep

Abbasi, Mokhtar-Ali,Ghafouri-Kesbi, Farhad Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2011 Animal Bioscience Vol.24 No.6

The aim of this paper was to estimate genetic parameters for body weight and five body measurements for an experimental population of Iranian Makooei sheep maintained at the Makooei Sheep Breeding Station at Makoo, Iran. To do this, yearling live weight (YW), and five body measurements, i.e., body length (BL), heart girth (HG), height at withers (HW), height at back (HB) and scrotal circumference (SC), were analyzed in a multi-trait animal model using the DXMUX program of DFREML software package. Heritability estimates were $0.22{\pm}0.08$, $0.11{\pm}0.06$, $0.21{\pm}0.07$, $0.17{\pm}0.06$, $0.17{\pm}0.06$ and $0.32{\pm}0.10$ for YW, BL, HG, HW, HB and SC, respectively. These estimates indicate that selection in Makooei sheep would generate moderate genetic progress in body weight and body measurements. Scrotal circumference, as an indicator of reproductive potential, exhibited the highest heritability. This trait, therefore, could successfully be used to increase productivity of males and, indirectly, female fertility. Genetic correlations between traits studied were all positive and ranged from 0.15 (YW/HB) to 0.99 (HW/HB). Phenotypic correlations were also positive and ranged from moderate (0.32, HW/SC) to high (0.94, HW/HB). Positive genetic and phenotypic correlations indicate that improvement in body measurements both at the genetic and phenotypic levels is expected through selection on body weight and vice versa.

Deformation prediction by a feed forward artificial neural network during mouse embryo micromanipulation

        Ali A. Abbasi,G.R. Vossoughi,M.T. Ahmadian 한국통합생물학회 2012 Animal cells and systems Vol.16 No.2

In this study, a neural network (NN) modeling approach has been used to predict the mechanical and geometrical behaviors of mouse embryo cells. Two NN models have been implemented. In the first NN model dimple depth (w),dimple radius (a) and radius of the semi-circular curved surface of the cell (R) were used as inputs of the model while indentation force (f) was considered as output. In the second NN model, indentation force (f), dimple radius (a) and radius of the semi-circular curved surface of the cell (R) were considered as inputs of the model and dimple depth was predicted as the output of the model. In addition, sensitivity analysis has been carried out to investigate the influence of the significance of input parameters on the mechanical behavior of mouse embryos. Experimental data deduced by Flu¨ckiger (2004) were collected to obtain training and test data for the NN. The results of these investigations show that the correlation values of the test and training data sets are between 0.9988 and 1.0000, and are in good agreement with the experimental observations.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The present article describes the synthesis, <I>in vitro</I> urease inhibition and <I>in silico</I> molecular docking studies of a novel series of bi-heterocyclic bi-amides. The synthesis of title compounds was initiated by benzoylation, with benzoyl chloride (<B>1</B>), of the key starter ethyl 2-(2-amino-1,3-thiazol-4-yl)acetate (<B>2</B>) in weak basic aqueous medium followed by hydrazide formation, <B>4</B>, and cyclization with CS2 to reach the parent bi-heterocyclic nucleophile, <I>N</I>-{4-[(5-sulfanyl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)methyl]-1,3-thiazol-2-yl}benzamide (<B>5</B>). Various electrophiles, <B>8a–l</B>, were synthesized by a two-step process and these were finally coupled with <B>5</B> to yield the targeted bi-heterocyclic bi-amide molecules, <B>9a–l</B>. The structures of the newly synthesized products were corroborated by IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, EI-MS and elemental analysis. The <I>in vitro</I> screening of these molecules against urease explored that most of the compounds exhibit potent inhibitory potential against this enzyme. The compound <B>9j</B>, with IC50 value of 2.58 ± 0.02 µM, exhibited most promising inhibitory activity among the series, relative to standard thiourea having IC50 value of 21.11 ± 0.12 µM. <I>In silico</I> studies fully augmented the experimental enzyme inhibition results. Chemo-informatics analysis showed that synthesized compounds (<B>9a–l</B>) mostly obeyed the Lipinski's rule. Molecular docking study suggested that ligand <B>9j</B> exhibited good binding energy value (−7.10 kcal/mol) and binds within the active region of target protein. So, on the basis of present investigation, it was inferred that <B>9j</B> may serve as a novel scaffold for designing more potent urease inhibitors.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • Plan Dose Evaluation of Three Dimensional Conformal Radiotherapy Planning (3D-CRT) of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC): Experience of a Tertiary Care University Hospital in Pakistan

Abbasi, Ahmed Nadeem,Hafiz, Asim,Ali, Nasir,Khan, Khurshid Ahmed Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.10

Background: Radiation therapy is the mainstay of treatment for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Importance of tumor coverage and challenges posed by its unique and critical location are well evident. Therefore we aimed to evaluate our radiation treatment plan through dose volume histograms (DVHs) to find planning target volume (PTV) dose coverage and factors affecting it. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study covered 45 histologically proven nasopharyngeal cancer patients who were treated with definitive 3D-CRT and chemotherapy between Feb 2006 to March 2013 at the Department of Oncology, Section Radiation Oncology, Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan. DVH was evaluated to find numbers of shrinking field (phases), PTV volume in different phases and its coverage by the 95% isodose lines, along with influencing factors. Results: There were 36 males (80%) and 9 females (20%) in the age range of 12-84 years. Stage IVA (46.7%) was the most common stage followed by stage III (31.1). Eighty six point six-percent received induction, 95.5% received concurrent and 22.2% received adjuvant chemotherapy. The prescribed median radiation dose was 70Gy to primary, 60Gy to clinically positive neck nodes and 50Gy to clinically negative neck regions. Mean dose to spinal cord was 44.2Gy and to optic chiasma was 52Gy. Thirty seven point eight-percent patients completed their treatment in three phases while 62.2% required four to five phases. Mean volume for PTV3 was $247.8cm^3$ (50-644.3), PTV4 $173.8cm^3$ (26.5-345.1) and PTV5 $119.6cm^3$ (18.9-246.1) and PTV volume coverage by 95% isodose lines were 74.4%, 85.7% and 100% respectively. Advanced T stage, intracranial extension and tumor volume > $200cm^3$ were found to be important factors associated with decreased PTV coverage by 95% isodose line. Conclusions: 3D CRT results in adequate PTV dose coverage by 95% isodose line. However advanced T stage, intracranial extension and large target volume require more advanced techniques like IMRT for appropriate PTV coverage.

      • 2-Furoic piperazide derivatives as promising drug candidates of type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s diseases: <i>In vitro</i> and <i>in silico</i> studies

        Abbasi, Muhammad Athar,Hassan, Mubashir,ur-Rehman, Aziz,Siddiqui, Sabahat Zahra,Hussain, Ghulam,Shah, Syed Adnan Ali,Ashraf, Muhammad,Shahid, Muhammad,Seo, Sung Yum Elsevier 2018 Computational biology and chemistry Vol.77 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The heterocyclic compounds have been extensively reported for their bioactivity potential. The current research work reports the synthesis of some new multi-functional derivatives of 2-furoic piperazide (<B>1</B>; 1-(2-furoyl)piperazine). The synthesis was initiated by reacting the starting compound <B>1</B> with 3,5-dichloro-2-hydroxybenzenesulfonyl chloride (<B>2</B>) in a basic, polar and protic medium to obtain the parent sulfonamide <B>3</B> which was then treated with different electrophiles, <B>4a–g</B>, in a polar and aprotic medium to acquire the designed molecules, <B>5a</B>–<B>g</B>. These convergent derivatives were evaluated for their inhibitory potential against <I>α</I>-glucosidase, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) enzymes. Acarbose was used as a reference standard for <I>α</I>-glucosidase inhibition while eserine for AChE and BChE inhibition. Some of the synthesized compounds were identified as promising inhibitors of these three enzymes and their bioactivity potentials were also supported by molecular docking study. The most active compounds among the synthetic analogues might be helpful in drug discovery and development for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and Alzhiemer’s diseases.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Synthesis of multi-functional 2-furoic piperazide derivatives. </LI> <LI> Enzyme inhibitory studies against different enzymes. </LI> <LI> Computational studies to augment the <I>in vitro</I> results. </LI> <LI> Suitable therapeutic agents for type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. </LI> <LI> Mild hemolytic agents toward red blood cell membrane. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Elimination characteristics of sulfonated cobalt phthalocyanine catalyst (Europhtal) from wastewater in natural gas refineries by adsorption using modified natural zeolite

        Ali Gharibi,Benyamin Akhlaghi,Mohsen Abbasi 대한환경공학회 2022 Environmental Engineering Research Vol.27 No.2

The present research introduces adsorption of sulfonated cobalt phthalocyanine catalyst (Europhtal) from the real wastewater that is produced in the mercaptan removal unit (Merox) of the third refinery, South Pars Gas Complex (SPGC), Assaluyeh, Iran. Therefore, novel low-cost natural zeolite modified with polyaluminium chloride (PAC) was investigated as an adsorbent for the treatment of Europhtal wastewater. Central composite design (CCD), as a set of response surface methodology (RSM), was applied to acquire optimum operational conditions such as contact time, pH, adsorbent dosage, and Europhtal concentration. Results showed that the removal percentage of Europhtal in the real wastewater was 93.4% at best operating condition consisting of a pH of 6.7, sonication time of 8 min, 0.035 g of adsorbent. The obtained results were evaluated by adsorption isotherms and kinetic parameters. It was found that the equilibrium data matched the Freundlich model acceptably, with the maximum experimental adsorption capacity of this model was 687.51 mg g-1 at 301.15 K. From the kinetic data, it was revealed that the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Furthermore, the obtained thermodynamic parameters such as ΔH°, ΔS°, and ΔG° imply the endothermic essence of adsorption proceeding spontaneously.

Waist Circumference and Spirometric Measurements in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Ali Alavi Foumani,Alireza Jafari,Zahra Abbasi Ranjbar,Ehsan Kazemnezhad Leyli,Shima Ildari,Mohammad Masoud Neyaragh 질병관리본부 2019 Osong Public Health and Research Persptectives Vol.10 No.4

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the waist circumference of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), had an impact on lung function. Methods: There were 180 patients with COPD recruited into this prospective cross-sectional study. The age, weight, body mass index and waist circumference (WC) were measured. Spirometry parameters including forced vital capacity (FVC), and forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1), were measured and FEV1/FVC calculated. Results: The mean FEV1/FVC in both normal weight and overweight patients, did not statistically significantly correlate with WC. The COPD assessment test, positively correlated with WC (p = 0.031). A positive correlation with body mass index (p < 0.001), smoking (p = 0.027), and global initiative for chronic obstructive lung disease score (p = 0.009), were observed to positively associate with WC. WC, age, C-reactive protein, duration of disease, and gender (male), were observed to be statistically significant risk factors for the severity of COPD. Conclusion: WC was not observed to impact upon lung function in this study but it was a predictive factor for COPD severity in patients.

On Generalised Quasi-ideals in Ordered Ternary Semigroups

Abbasi, Mohammad Yahya,Khan, Sabahat Ali,Basar, Abul Department of Mathematics 2017 Kyungpook mathematical journal Vol.57 No.4

In this paper, we introduce generalised quasi-ideals in ordered ternary semigroups. Also, we define ordered m-right ideals, ordered (p, q)-lateral ideals and ordered n-left ideals in ordered ternary semigroups and studied the relation between them. Some intersection properties of ordered (m,(p, q), n)-quasi ideals are examined. We also characterize these notions in terms of minimal ordered (m,(p, q), n)-quasi-ideals in ordered ternary semigroups. Moreover, m-right simple, (p, q)-lateral simple, n-left simple, and (m,(p, q), n)-quasi simple ordered ternary semigroups are defined and some properties of them are studied.
