Purpose: This study examined the effect of EMG-stim related to the functional recovery of the upper extremity in chronic stroke patients with an intensive massed practice protocol. Methods: The subjects were assigned randomly to either the EMG-stim group (n=10) or sham treatment group (n=10). Both groups received conventional physical therapy, occupational therapy and FES, five times per week over a four week period. In the EMG-stim group, EMG-stim was applied to the hemiplegic wrist and finger extensors for 2 sessions for 30 minutes per day, 5 times per week over a 4 week period. As the pre- and the post-test, the following four motor tests were assessed as the function of the upper extremity clinical functional test: extensor digitorum strength test, Box and Block test, Fugl-Mayer Assessment, and Jebson-Taylor Hand Function Test. Results: In the Box and Block test and Fugl-Mayer Assessment, there were statistically significant differences between both groups as well as between pre- and post-test. The extensor digitorum and wrist extensor strength were similar in both groups. In the Jebson-Taylor Hand Function Test, there was a significant difference in simulated page turning but not in the other subtests. Conclusion: Intensive massed practice with EMG-stim intervention applied to the hemiplegic upper extremity is an effective therapeutic method for chronic stroke patients. However, a variety of intervention methods designed for stroke patients in clinical settings are needed.

Purpose: Apraxia is characterized by loss of the ability to execute learned, skilled, sequential purposeful movements which cannot be accounted for by elementary disturbances of strength, coordination, sensory, lack of comprehension, attention, and willingness etc. For an accurate diagnosis and treatment of patients with apraxia, an understanding of the prevalence rate and clinical characteristics of apraxia is necessary. The purpose of this study was to estimate the apraxia prevalence rate. Methods: The apraxia prevalence rate was investigated via an apraxia assessment tool in 137 stroke patients, and the clinical characteristics of general stroke patients and stroke patients with apraxia were compared. Results: 14 (1 left hemiplegia, 8 right hemiplegia, 5 quadri hemiplegia) of a total of 137 stroke patients were diagnosed with apraxia. The group of stroke patients with apraxia showed lower values of mmt, mbc and fac than those of general stroke patients. Conclusion: The apraxia prevalence rate of stroke patients was approximately 10%, while the clinical function of stroke patients with apraxia was generally inferior to that of general stroke patients.

The aim of this study is to enhance the abrasion of the hydrolyzed polyethylene terephthalate(PET) fabrics by using' microwave energy. In other to achieve the aforementioned objectives, PET fabrics were hydrolyzed in NaOH solution by using abrasjon method such as dipping, microwave-dipping, pad steam-dry, and pad microwave-dry, and then abrasion of the hydrolyzed PET fabrics was calculated and investigated. As a result obtained form this study. the abrasion of the hydrolyzed PET fabrics is directly proportional to hydrolyzed time and NaOH concentration. And also, microwave-dipping method and pad microwave-dry method showed remarkable abrasion effect than the others.<br/>

For the development of technology for durable flame retardant finish of PET fabrics, an experimental study was carried out, The following conclusions were drawn: 1. In the synthesis of diphenyl methyl phosphate(DPMP) and diphenyl ethyl phosphate(DPEP) which served as flame retardant for PET, the process using nitrogen current to expel HCl gas in the reaction system is practicable without the use of solution such as pyridine or tertiary amine. 2. DPMP and DPEP showed good flame retardancy effects. 3. PET fabrics treated with DPMP and DPEP were excellently durable to repeated washings and wet cure gave softer touch than dry cure.

Mental practice with motor imagery represents an conscious processing of movement rehearsal to the content of the motor intention without actual movements. Recently, numberous studies showed that the cognitive rehearsal of physical movements could improve the performance of the skilled movement, and that such mental training had been recognized as the useful practical methods for athletes and clients for rehabilitation. So we investigated the effect of motor imagery comparing with physical practice through aiming movement task. A total of 30 college students participated in this experiment, who had no neurological disorder and orthopedic problem with the upper extremities before 3 years. Subjects were randomly divided to each of 3 group respectively, which consisted of mental practice, physical practice, and control group. They performed to move and click the mouse on two 5cm-diameter circles that were apart from 10cm each other as quickly and accurately as possible. Movement time was measured from the left target to the other one for 30 seconds at pre-training and post-training session in each of groups. Mental and physical groups were scheduled for practice sessions in the laboratory for each of the next three consecutive days, consisting of repetitive cycles of rest(60 s) and practice (60 s) for 30 min each day. Our findings showed that repeated measurement of two way ANOVA((group: mental, physical, control) × (repeat: pre, post)) showed a main effect of pre-post(p<.05) and a significant interaction of pre-post × group(p<.05), reflecting the reduce of movement time for mental and physical training compared with control group. However, there was no difference in the test of between subject effect(p>.05). Our results suggested that mental imagery training was an effective method as much as the acutual training, although the task paradigm is simple like the repetitive aiming movement that did not require the cognitive processing. We consider that mental imagery may be used for improving motor performance in populations with physical dysfunction due to sports injury or neurological disorders.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate whether motor cortex excitability by transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over primary motor cortex (M1) affects motor performance of serial reaction task. Methods: Cathodal, anodal and sham tDCS (1 mA) are applied over right M1 of 24 subjects for 30 minutes including 11minutes for task period time. We applied two electrodes at the same position to both an experimental group and a sham-controlled group, and we made 2 groups recognize to be applicated of stimulation. Flexion, extension of wrist and thumb flexion are carried out following colors of arrows on the monitor. Serial reaction time task was applied to confirm the difference of the reaction time between 2 groups. Results: Reaction time is decreased in both tDCS-group and Sham-controlled tDCS group, and the degree of reduction is much greater in the post-test than pre-test. Reduction of reaction time between groupsis statistically significant. Conclusion: We consider that anodal tDCS increased the cortical excitability of the underlying motor cortex and it can be helpful to modulate motor performance. It seems that tDCS is an effective modality to modulate brain function, and it will be great help to mediate strategy for the brain injury patients.
