        국내 유학생 멘토의 영어회화 멘토링 프로그램 참가에 관한 연구

        The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of mentoring participation of international student mentors in a college English conversation mentoring program in Korea. For the study, 5 international students participated in the English conversation camp as mentors, while 20 Korean students participated in the camp as mentees for 2 weeks. The mentoring program for international student mentors has set for both of mentors and mentees to develop the core competencies such as communicative competency, self-development competency and global competency. The effect of mentoring participation of international student mentors was investigated by mentors' daily reports, reflection papers and pre and post surveys. The mentors’ daily reports were summarized by Word Cloud and showed that international student mentors spent most of mentoring time by doing ‘presentation practice’, ‘cultural exchange activity’ and ‘English pronunciation practice’ for mentees. The survey results indicated that both of mentors and mentees showed the high satisfaction on a mentoring program. International student mentors also mentioned their English competence in speaking has been developed by mentoring participation. In addition, the survey on core competency of participants showed the increase of global competence, communicative competence and self-development competence. The further pedagogical implication is discussed in the study.

        공학인증프로그램을 위한 교양영어교육과정 개발

        This study proposes the ideas of developing General English (GE) curriculum for students majoring in engineering and enrolled in ABEEK (Accreditation Board for Engineering Education in Korea) program. There is a request to modify the current GE curriculum for college learners into English for Specific Purposes (ESP) based curriculum, which reflects the needs of ABEEK participants. For the first step to design the GE curriculum for ABEEK, the present study not only developed the survey questions for learners and professors, but also reviewed the curriculum currently used and proposed by ABEEK center. The results of survey were analyzed by target needs and learning needs, which are the basic concepts of ESP. The most requested target needs are communicative competence, learners-centered approach and proficiency-based curriculum. Learning needs are mostly described as practice of practical English learning and proficiency-based instruction. The comparison between the groups of professors and learners also revealed that more active interactions between the groups, learners and professors of English and engineering, are invoked to develop the GE curriculum for the ABEEK program.

        The Effect of AI Chatbot-Based Tourism English Instruction on Intercultural Communicative Competence

        The present study aimed at investigating AI chatbot-based Tourism English instruction for college students to develop their intercultural communicative competence. For the study, two distinctive models of AI based educational approach were proposed; learning with AI (LWAI) and learning about AI (LAAI). A total of 50 Tourism English 3 learners with the model of LWAI were assigned to conduct a conversation with the chatbot during the semester, while 20 Tourism English 6 learners with the model of LAAI were asked to build a hotel English chatbot. In LWAI, the collected chatbot conversation reports were analyzed in terms of task completion rates. It was found that the chatbot conversations mostly involved small talk rather than problem-solving tasks. In LAAI, Tourism English learners collected English for hotel reservations and coded data into the hotel English chatbot with the help of computer engineering students. As a result of a team project, the hotel English chatbot building was successful. Lastly, there was an increase in participants’ intercultural communicative competence in terms of respect for cultural differences and interaction attentiveness. In short, the present study showed that the AI chatbot-based Tourism English instruction had a positive effect on the development of intercultural communicative competence.

        교양영어회화 과목을 위한 원어민, 한국인 교수의 팀티칭에 관한 연구

        This study concerns about the effectiveness of team teaching mediated by Korean and native English teachers for English conversation class in college. Since the spoken language based instruction invites more native English speakers into the classroom, the way to cooperate native speakers of English with Korean teachers is requested. While several ways of team teaching are introduced and conducted, its effectiveness related to learners` academic competence and learning motivation is still on research. Therefore, this study conducted team teaching for English conversation class with native and Korean English teachers for the duration of one-semester. The results of learners` academic competence based on listening and reading skills were compared. Additionally, the comparison of pre and post survey on learners` motivation toward English study was analyzed on the basis of the belief that higher motivation attracts learners` linguistic competence. The results revealed that one-semester of team teaching didn`t affect on academic achievement but it gave an impetus to some level of motivation toward English study.

        국내 영어교육에서 English Literacy관련 연구동향 분석

        The present study is aimed at investigating the previous research findings about Englsih Listeracy (EL) of Korean EFL learners. In the study, 93 journal articles were collected from the journal of English Language and Literature and Teaching (ELLT). Then, the study conducted a statistical review with Freuqency Analysis (FA) to get the gist of collected journal articles. The collected data was categorized into participants, research method and topics. In addition, Content Analysis (CA) was follwed to ascertain which English literacies were dealt mostly among the journal articles. For the study, the term, EL is considered as functional literacy (FL), ciritical literacy (CL) and literacy for social practice (LSP) and they were analyzed respectively. In the findings, firstly, the descriptive information provides that ELLT mostly embraces the tertiary level of participants, teaching method and English writing competence. Secondly, the result of CA reported that FL related journal articles were mostly found in ELLT. Lastly, the study concludes the discussion with the further pedagogical implications of EL.

        문화간 의사소통능력 향상을 위한 PBL기반 ESP 수업 설계

        본 연구의 목적은 항공서비스 분야에서 업무를 수행하는데 필요한 영어능력의 향상을 목표로 한다. 특수목적영어(English for Specific Purposes) 교과목인 항공서비스 영어 수업을 문제 중심 학습법(Problem Based Learning: PBL)을 기반으로 설계하고, 대학생의 문화 간 의사소통능력 향상에 미치는 효과를 검증하고자 한다. PBL을 기반으로 한 수업을 설계하기 위해, 환자의 문제 상황에 대한 해결책을 제시하기 위해 의학, 보건 분야에서 주로 사용되어 온 PBL에 대한 이론적인 배경과 사례연구를 진행하고, 이를 바탕으로 다양한 문제 상황에서의 해결책 제시를 요구하는 항공서비스 영어 수업의 목적에 따라 수업을 설계한다. PBL 기반의 수업은 비구조화 문제를 개발하여 시나리오 형식으로 제공하고, 학습자들은 문제를 해결해 가는 과정에서 학습이 이뤄진다. 본 연구에서는 항공 서비스 분야의 NCS 기준에 따라 세 개의 모듈을 바탕으로 문제를 구성한다. 그 내용은 이륙 전 서비스, 기내 서비스, 기내 안전에 관한 것이다. PBL 기반의 항공서비스 영어 수업은 수강생 20명을 대상으로 15주간 진행하고, 사전, 사후 검사지로 학습자의 문화 간 의사소통능력 향상에 미치는 영향을 검증한 결과, 학습자간의 상호작용 활동에 긍정적인 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 수강생의 학습보고서를 분석한 결과 자기주도 학습력이 향상한 것을 확인하였다. The present study is aimed at implementing Problem based Learning (PBL) to the course of English for cabin crew, which is regarded as a course of English for Specific Purposes(ESP). In the study, the previous research and theoretical background on PBL were reviewed and the PBL based ESP course was developed for the study. As a quasi-experiment, three ill-structured problems; preflight service, in-flight service and safe flight practices problems were asked for learners to solve during the semester. The study collected the data to investigate the effect of PBL on the development of Intercultural Communicative Competence(ICC) and found the positive effect on developing the interaction engagement of participants. In addition, participants’ reflection papers were reviewed on the basis of content analysis and found the learners’ self-directed learning competence is facilitated during the PBL based English learning.

        교양영어교육에 관한 학생 요구 조사: 보건 계열 특성화 대학의 사례를 중심으로

        This study aims to find out university students' needs to develop the general English (GE) curriculum on the basis of students' needs. 845 students taking GE courses at one college, which is renowned for the departments of health and is divided into health and non-health majors, were asked to respond to the survey. The results showed that college students' needs were characterized by proficiency-based and ESP-oriented curriculum. There were differences between the health and the non-health majors in their needs in terms of the language of instruction, class hours of the week, and the English proficiency certification test for graduation, with the first two showing significant differences. Based on the results, some considerations for the curriculum development were mentioned.

        의사소통능력 향상을 위한 어린이 영어캠프에 관한 연구

        This study investigates the English camp for children on the basis of the development of communicative competence. One hundred twenty students participated in the camp during the summer vacation for 2 weeks and experienced the intensive English learning program. Participants were asked to reside in the university dormitory with native speakers and bilingual college students. For the study, pre-and post surveys were administrated to measure learners' English proficiency as well as affective variables using the AMTB (Attitudes and Motivation test Battery), WTC (Willingness to Communicate) scale and SMAS (Stephen Mutigroup Acculturation Test). The results of this study indicated that learners' English proficiency and motivation/attitudes were increased significantly after the participation in the English camp. Participants' acculturation level to the English culture was increased, but WTC in English was not significantly increased Furthermore, participants' affective skills were compared to English proficiency test results and it suggests that learners' AMTB and SMAS are regarded as significant factors to facilitate English communicative competence.
