This paper reports a methodology for preparing close-packed two dimensional gold nanoprism films and hexagonal nanoplate films at a hexane/water interface. By controlling the concentration of linker molecules in the hexane layer and the temperature of the colloid solution, highly ordered close-packed nanoplate arrays can be fabricated. These films were investigated to compare their corresponding surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) efficiencies. It was demonstrated that the Au nanoprism films resulted in a stronger SERS enhancement than the Au hexagonal nanoplate films. The difference in the SERS enhancement is attributed to the film array difference, demonstrating that Au nanoprism films have a higher line contact density than their Au hexagonal analogues.

The current study aims to explore the perceptual difference between high school students and in-service teachers regarding the item difficulty of a regular English achievement test. The research questions are as follows: (1) How does the perception of item difficulty in an English reading test differ between high school teachers and students for each of item types? (2) What types of item do in-service teachers regard as the difficult ones in making EFL reading test items? For this research, a mixed-methods approach was utilized in which quantitative data from a survey and qualitative data from interview were analyzed. 107 high school students and 3 English teachers participated in the survey. Later, 2 students and one English teacher took part in the interview. The results indicated that the perceptual difference between students and teachers regarding the difficulty of the item type was small. However, some item types such as ‘fill-in-the-blank’ and ‘choosing the word appropriate for the given context’ showed the notable difference between predicted PCA(proportion of the correct answer) and actual PCA. In addition, in-service teachers felt difficult in making the ‘fill-in-the-blank’ type while they selected ‘the grammar’ type as the easiest one in making the item.

Purpose: Croup is a common pediatric respiratory illness with symptoms of varying severity. Moreover, epiglottitis is a rare disease that can rapidly progress to life-threatening airway obstruction. Although the clinical course and treatments differ between croup and epiglottitis, they are difficult to differentiate on presentation. We aimed to compare the clinical characteristics of croup and epiglottitis in Emergency Department patients. Methods: The 2012 National Emergency Department Information System database of 146 Korean Emergency Departments was used to investigate patients aged ≤18 years presenting with croup or epiglottitis. Results: We analyzed 19,374 croup patients and 236 epiglottitis patients. The male:female sex ratios were 1.9:1 and 2.3:1 and mean ages were 2.2±2.0 and 5.6±5.8 years, respectively. The peak incidence of croup was observed in July and that of epiglottitis was observed in May. The hospitalization rate was lower in croup than in epiglottitis patients, and the proportion of patients treated in the intensive care unit was lower among croup patients. The 3 most common chief complaints in both croup and epiglot- titis patients were cough, fever, and dyspnea. Epiglottitis patients experienced dyspnea, sore throat, and vomiting more often than croup patients (P<0.05). Conclusion: Both groups had similar sex ratios, arrival times, 3 most common chief complaints, and 5 most common comorbidities. Epiglottitis patients had a lower incidence rate, higher mean age of onset, and higher hospitalization rate and experienced dyspnea, sore throat, and vomiting more often than croup patients. Our results may help in the differential diagnosis of croup and epiglottitis.
