We have investigated a quantitative measurement technique of the degree of dispersion of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). SWNTs were suspended in aqueous media using a sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). SWNTs with different dispersion states depending on the intensity and time of sonication and centrifugation were prepared. Raman spectroscopy has been used to probe the dispersion and aggregation state of singlewalled carbon nanotubes in solution. Individual suspended SWNTs show more increased fluorescence peaks and decreased roping peaks at raman shift 267 ㎝?¹ to G-peak relative intensity ratio than those of samples containing bundled and roped SWNTs. The ultraviolet-visible-near infrared (UV-vis-NIR) absorption spectrum of decanted supernatant samples show more sharp van Hove singularity peaks than the sample which was prepared without centrifugation and is apparently dominated by tube bundles and ropes. A simple method for quantitative characterizing the dispersion state of SWNT in solution was developed using comparison between raman and absorption spectra.

Single walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs) can be applied for biomolecular sensors and/or markers due to their small size and excellent optical properties such as near infrared fluorescence and absorption. Here, we put out an optical biosensor using absorption signal of SWCNTs to detect DNA hybridization. SWCNTs exhibit sharp absorption peak distributions at different wavelengths when they exist in a well-dispersed solution state. It is found that DNA hybridization results in red peak shifts of nanotubes in the near infrared region. Compared to metallic species, semiconducting SWCNTs show manifest variations. The findings in this work make SWCNTs be used to selectively recognize various DNA interactions.

We have investigated the effects of catalyst layers (Fe/Al2O3) on the growth of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) synthesized by thermal chemical vapor deposition to control the length, diameter, and alignment of CNTs. We produced vertically aligned CNTs more than several millimeters in length under the optimized conditions. Also we have demonstrated that vertically aligned multi-walled CNTs synthesized on a stainless steel mesh could be utilized as an oil-water separation membrane filter, having both superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity.
