The conspicuous obsession of the upper middle class people in Virginia Woolf’s first novel, The Voyage Out, is with work. Upholding a Victorian legacy that valorizes work and industry as a vehicle of the self-cultivation and a proof of personal respectability, these people feel responsible for, involved in, or at least interested in the project of educating Rachel Vinrace whom they largely presume to do nothing. Rachel’s idleness in the novel is at once taken for granted and yet subtly berated and controlled. Far from doing nothing, however, Rachel constantly thinks, reads, and grows in her own way. Through the very act of being idle―thinking, reading, and playing which nobody in the novel is capable of reading properly― she educates herself. Her ostensible idleness provides an alternative possibility of Bildung as it enables her to see through the social system and to reach the epiphanic moments of being, that is, the moments of an impersonal state connected to things and beings, while fashioning her own individuality. Rachel is not so much killed off by social reality or the marriage plot that plots against her life; rather, she remains undead, living beyond the world that she finds lazy and dull.

작약이 HaCaT 세포에서 아토피 피부염 관련 염증 억제에 미치는 영향

Objectives : Paeonia lactiflora Pallas (PLP) have been reported to have pharmacological effects such as anti-inflammatory and analgesic. However, it is not yet known whether PLP extract has anti-inflammatory effect on HaCaT cells, human keratinocyte. Methods : To confirm the anti-inflammatory effect of PLP on keratinocyte, TNF-𝛼/IFN-𝛾-stimulated HaCaT cells were used. HaCaT cells were pre-treated with PLP for 1h before stimulation with TNF-𝛼/IFN-𝛾. Then HaCaT cells were stimulated with TNF-𝛼/IFN-𝛾 for 24 h, the cells and media were harvested to measure the inflammatory cytokines levels. Granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1𝛽), and TNF-𝛼 were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and the mRNA expression of thymus and activation-regulated chemokines (TARC), IL-6, and IL-8 were measured by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). We also investigated the inhibitory mechanism of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPKs) including ERK, JNK, and p38 and nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-𝜅B) by PLP using western blot. Results : PLP did not show cytotoxicity in HaCaT cells. In TNF-𝛼/IFN-𝛾-stimulated HaCaT cells, PLP significantly inhibited the expression of GM-CSF, MCP-1 IL-1𝛽, TNF-𝛼, TARC and IL-6. PLP inhibited the phosphorylation of ERK and translocation of NF-𝜅B into the nucleus. Conclusions : These results indicate that PLP could ameliorate the TNF-𝛼/IFN-𝛾-stimulated inflammatory response through inhibition of MAPK and NF-kB signal pathway. This suggests that PLP could be used beneficial agent to improve skin inflammation.

시청자 중심의 사용성을 고려한 Interactive TV 세트탑 박스 개발

단순히 보기만해야 하던 TV가 데이터방송이라는 진화를 통해서 시청자와 교감을 나누고 있다. 그러나 VOD 편성수준의 방송프로그램과 뉴스, 날씨 등의 단순정보는 진정한 쌍방향(Interactive)이라고 하기에는 다소 미흡한 측면이 있다. 새로운 부가가치 창출에 대한 가대를 받고 있는 ITV가 진정한 시 청자를 위한 서비스가 되기 위해서는 다양한 콘텐츠 못지않게 시청자 중심의 설계가 필요하다. 본 연구에서 제안한 시스템은 사용자의 편이성을 고려한 사용환경을 반영하였다. 시스템 구성은 클라이언트 환경에서 데이터방송을 시연할 수 있는 세트탑 박스, 방송콘텐츠를 송출하는 미디어서버와 데이터 서버로 구성하여 테스트하였다.
