Continuous wave CO₂ laser beam weldability and formability of steel plates for car (SAPH and SPCC) were studied. The following three problems were treated: ( i ) the maximum gap size in butt welding of SA PH steel plates with different thicknesses, (ii) the formability of butt welded SAPH steel plates with different thicknesses through bending test, (iii) the formability of butt welded SPCC steel plates with same thicknesses through Erichsen cup test.<br/> In the range of the gap size~O.1mm, the optimal butt welding speed was faster than that of no gap (air gap) condition. This behaviour was independent on the difference of thickness at any combination. Also, the allowable gap size in steel plates with different thicknesses was larger than with same thicknesses.<br/> In the range of T/To(bead shape) ??0.8, good bending formability was obtained at any combination of thickness. The formability of SAPH steel plates was improved by reducing the hardness in weld bead using pre-heating process.<br/> The formability of butt welded SPCC steel plates through Erichsen cup test was a little lower than that of parent material. Because weld defects effect on formability, the full reduction of defects was very important to improve the formability of welded plates (tailored blank).<br/>
