A new fingerprint classfication method is presented, which uses singular points and the distribution of directional patterns in a fingerprint image. In this method, a directional pattern is extracted from a 16×16 fingerprint block image using the micro patterns. Next, singular points are founded in the directional patterns of fingerprint image using the micro directional patterns. Then an input fingerprint image can be classified into one of 6 categories using the number of singular points, its location, and the distribution of directional patterns. The experimental results show that the proposed method is capable of classifying input fingerprints into one of 6 categories.

A vehicle plate extraction technique is proposed using the intensity transition characteristics of vehicle plate area. A vehicle plate is directly extracted by examining vehicle image from down to up using the domain knowledge. We get 151 real world vehicle images at different time, and test our method with them. In the experimental results, our proposed method shows good performance in spite of the unclear vehicle plate boundary and physically degraded vehicle plate. It shows 98.7% extraction rate, and takes about 1.0 sec to extracte vehicle plate in a vehicle image.

A study has been conducted experimentally on natural convection heat transfer characteristics of a heating flat plate with heat diffusion fins in air. The effects of heat diffusion fin lengths, heating plate temperature, air velocity, and Rayleigh numbers are mainly investigated. The mean heat transfer coefficient decreases as a dimensionless fin length increases and heating place temperature 60℃ is the best at constant heat flux. The mean Nusselt number increases with increasing Rayleigh number and Reynolds number and H/S = 1.0 in the dimensionless fin length is found to be the optimun size in a tested length, 1.0≤H/S≤4.0

A nuclear spent fuel shipping cask is required by IAEA and domestic regulations to withstand a 9m free drop condition. In this paper, the structural analysis under the 9m side drop condition was performed to understand the dynamic impact behavior and to evaluate the safety of the cask for 7 PWR nuclear spent fuel assemblies. The analysis result was compared with the measured value of the 9m side drop test for the 1/3 scaled-down model and the accuracy of the 3D analysis was confirmed. Analysis in accordance with the diameter of impact limiters for the proto-type cask were performed. Through the analysis, the impact behaviors due to the side drop and the effects dependent on the diameter of impact limiters were grasped. Maximum stress intensities on each part of the cask were respectively calculated by using the stress evaluation program and the structural safety of the cask was finally evaluated in accordance with the regulations.

This paper presents vertical carbon nanotube (CNT) field effect transistors (FETs). For the first time, the author successfully fabricated vertical CNT-based FETs on an anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) template by using atomic layer deposition (ALD). Single walled CNTs were vertically grown and aligned with the vertical pores of an AAO template. By using ALD, a gate oxide material (Al2O3) and a gate metal (Au) were centrally located inside each pore, allowing the vertical CNTs grown in the pores to be individually gated. Characterizations of the gated/vertical CNTs were carried and the successful gate integration with the CNTs was confirmed.
