Development of Genetic Markers for Triploid Verification of the Pacific Oyster, Crassostrea gigas

        Kang, Jung-Ha,Lim, Hyun Jeong,Kang, Hyun-Soek,Lee, Jung-Mee,Baby, Sumy,Kim, Jong-Joo Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2013 Animal Bioscience Vol.26 No.7

The triploid Pacific oyster, which is produced by mating tetraploid and diploid oysters, is favored by the aquaculture industry because of its better flavor and firmer texture, particularly during the summer. However, tetraploid oyster production is not feasible in all oysters; the development of tetraploid oysters is ongoing in some oyster species. Thus, a method for ploidy verification is necessary for this endeavor, in addition to ploidy verification in aquaculture farms and in the natural environment. In this study, a method for ploidy verification of triploid and diploid oysters was developed using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) panels containing primers for molecular microsatellite markers. Two microsatellite multiplex PCR panels consisting of three markers each were developed using previously developed microsatellite markers that were optimized for performance. Both panels were able to verify the ploidy levels of 30 triploid oysters with 100% accuracy, illustrating the utility of microsatellite markers as a tool for verifying the ploidy of individual oysters.

Pressure Root Resorption of the Second Molar Caused by Third Molar Impaction: A Case Report of Severely Resorbed Root with Vital Pulp

Kang, Sumi,Kim, Euiseong Korean Academy of Dental Science 2016 Journal of korean dental science Vol.9 No.2

Pressure root resorption can be observed during the eruption of permanent dentition, especially of the maxillary canines (affecting lateral incisors) and mandibular third molars (affecting mandibular second molars). Since the cause of root resorption of the adjacent affected teeth is evident, treatment simply involves extraction of the impacted tooth. However, there have been few reports on the prognosis of the remaining resorbed tooth, as dentists often choose to extract them when damage due to root resorption is observed. We report a case involving a tooth that was severely resorbed due to pressure from an adjacent impacted tooth. After extraction of the impacted tooth, the remaining tooth retained vital pulp and survived as a functional tooth.

      • 탈정치화된 영역의 공공적 예술 행위

강수미(Sumi Kang) 한국예술종합학교 미술원 조형연구소 2010 Visual Vol.7 No.-

We have a tendency to consider art as something limited to a personal field of art activity by a private subject. But in this paper, I intend to show how certain artists are overcoming private art and realizing the public dimension in a dialectical sense by redefining and reforming their private characteristics through their works, thereby “intervening/participating” in the public domain, In short, the theme of discussion is the “publicness of private art intervening/ participating in the public domain.” At a time when the absorption of avant-garde art in the art market is considered a matter of course, artists’ dissolute practice becomes moderate aesthetical collectibles of art museums, and urban public art projects organized by the central government or local self-governing bodies are widespread, ""where"" to practice is a crucial issue for artists, in addition to “how” to practice. Therefore, in terms of topics, I want to discuss works by Korean contemporary artists that do not belong to-or are believed not to belong to-the following categories: plastic art defined by conventional aestheticism, public art as a genre of fine art, and large-scale art events for an unspecified number of the general public (for example, biennales, blockbuster exhibitions, festivals and exhibitions organized by local governments for the sake of tourism or cultural education, etc.) Prior to the main discussion, the following is an example of detailed topics and cases. 1. Mixrice, a project team formed in 2001 in Bucheon, Gyeonggido, has dealt continuously with the issue of (illegal) foreign migrant workers, What is important is that the artists do not appropriate the migrant workers as art, Rather, Mixrice intentionally works with non-aesthetic and non-subjective form and content based on the aesthetic standards of plastic arts. Focusing on the art practice of Mixrice up to 2009. I will discuss the theme of “Korea’s reality of multi-culture society and other-oriented art for sustainable community.” 2. Through Park Chan-Gyoung’s art I want to discuss the conditions and possibilities according to which art that is theoretically so extreme that it appeals only to the minority, and art that consists of opinions on today’s politics and contents critical of history, may form a field for public discussion. In the case of Park Chan-Gyoung, he works with a relatively clear political position. With a relatively small-sized target group in terms of intellectual understanding and aesthetic empathy, he works with critical writing, photographs and videos that are political and critical of reality. The interesting point here is that his art is able to deviate from the narrow circular tracks within the art world, which is considered as a de-politicized domain, and to intervene in the domain of public discourse. 3. Hong Young-In makes installation art that intervenes in public places of everyday life to charge rot only the external features of the place, but also the customarily defined characteristics and functions of the space, and the habitual perceptions and experiences of those who use the space. In many cases, her art takes place by means of twisting or violating the inner system of government force, functions of public ottices, and ethical and efficient rules of daily life. Here I see that art in the form of private expression can serve as public art practice, which changes and brings ideology, contradictions, weakness, and our inertial and passive perceptivity to the surface, by intentionally selecting the “negative method.” Let us solve the above contents while conducting concrete analyses on the artists’ works. In the process of examining these works, it is my expectation that we will be able to discover “other” methods of participating in the public domain within art. Moreover, I hope that we can think about “publicness of art” and “public art” with a more expanded and complex significance.

      • Effect of some lichen extracts on insecticidal activities and development the larvae of Aedes albopictus

        Sumi Lee,Byungsik Shin,Minhyo Kang,Jiyoung Hong,Dasol Bae,Yaeji Yoon,Byungmin Song 한국응용곤충학회 2018 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2018 No.04

      • Molecular Cloning and Characterization of Carbonic Anhydrase XII from Pufferfish ( <i>Takifugu rubripes</i> )

        Sumi, Kanij Rukshana,Kim, Soo Cheol,Howlader, Jewel,Lee, Won Kyo,Choi, Kap Seong,Kim, Hoy-Taek,Park, Jong-In,Nou, Ill-Sup,Kho, Kang Hee MDPI 2018 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MOLECULAR SCIENCES Vol.19 No.3

<P>In this study, an 1888-bp carbonic anhydrase XII (CA XII) sequence was cloned from the brain of the pufferfish, <I>Takifugu rubripes</I>. The cloned sequence contained a coding region of 1470-bp, which was predicted to translate into a protein of 490 amino acid residues. The predicted protein showed between 68–56% identity with the large yellow croaker (<I>Larimichthys crocea</I>), tilapia (<I>Oreochromis niloticus</I>), and Asian arowana (<I>Scleropages formosus</I>) CA XII proteins. It also exhibited 36% and 53% identity with human CA II and CA XII, respectively. The cloned sequence contained a 22 amino acid NH2-terminal signal sequence and three Asn-Xaa-Ser/Thr sequons, among which one was potentially glycosylated. Four cysteine residues were also identified (Cys-21, Cys-201, Cys-355, and Cys-358), two of which (Cys-21 and Cys-201) could potentially form a disulfide bond. A 22-amino acid COOH-terminal cytoplasmic tail containing a potential site for phosphorylation by protein kinase A was also found. The cloned sequence might be a transmembrane protein, as predicted from in silico and phylogenetic analyses. The active site analysis of the predicted protein showed that its active site residues were highly conserved with tilapia CA XII protein. Homology modeling of the pufferfish CA XII was done using the crystal structure of the extracellular domain of human carbonic anhydrase XII at 1.55 Å resolution as a template. Semi-quantitative reverse transcription (RT)-PCR, quantitative PCR (q-PCR), and in situ hybridization confirmed that pufferfish <I>CA XII</I> is highly expressed in the brain.</P>

Ligand-Independent Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Overexpression Correlates with Poor Prognosis in Colorectal Cancer

        Yun, Sumi,Kwak, Yoonjin,Nam, Soo Kyung,Seo, An Na,Oh, Heung-Kwon,Kim, Duck-Woo,Kang, Sung-Bum,Lee, Hye Seung Korean Cancer Association 2018 Cancer Research and Treatment Vol.50 No.4

<P><B>Purpose</B></P><P>Molecular treatments targeting epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs) are important strategies for advanced colorectal cancer (CRC). However, clinicopathologic implications of EGFRs and EGFR ligand signaling have not been fully evaluated. We evaluated the expression of EGFR ligands and correlation with their receptors, clinicopathologic factors, and patients’ survival with CRC.</P><P><B>Materials and Methods</B></P><P>The expression of EGFR ligands, including heparin binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HBEGF), transforming growth factor (TGF), betacellulin, and epidermal growth factor (EGF), were evaluated in 331 consecutive CRC samples using mRNA <I>in situ</I> hybridization (ISH). We also evaluated the expression status of EGFR, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), HER3, and HER4 using immunohistochemistry and/or silver ISH.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Unlike low incidences of <I>TGF</I> (38.1%), <I>betacellulin</I> (7.9%), and <I>EGF</I> (2.1%), <I>HBEGF</I> expression was noted in 62.2% of CRC samples. However, the expression of each EGFR ligand did not reveal significant correlations with survival. The combined analyses of EGFR ligands and EGFR expression indicated that the ligands‒/EGFR+ group showed a significant association with the worst disease-free survival (DFS; p=0.018) and overall survival (OS; p=0.005). It was also an independent, unfavorable prognostic factor for DFS (p=0.026) and OS (p=0.007). Additionally, HER4 nuclear expression, regardless of ligand expression, was an independent, favorable prognostic factor for DFS (p=0.034) and OS (p=0.049), by multivariate analysis.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>Ligand-independent EGFR overexpression was suggested to have a significant prognostic impact; thus, the expression status of EGFR ligands, in addition to EGFR, might be necessary for predicting patients' outcome in CRC. </P>
