Discourse Knowledge in English Education: The Key to Understanding Academic Language and Decontextualized Language

Minkyung Cho(Minkyung Cho) 서울대학교 교육종합연구원 2023 The SNU Journal of Education Research Vol.32 No.2

The ability to adjust one’s language according to discourse context is important for all English learners. Prior literature has operationalized two distinct types of language used in contexts: academic language and decontextualized language. Despite their similarities, academic language and decontextualized language have been studied in different strands of research. To bring together the discussion around language use in diverse contexts, this study investigated the commonalities between the two constructs by emphasizing the role of discourse knowledge. In doing this, the current study advanced the theoretical understanding of discourse knowledge by identifying its various aspects such as audience awareness (perspective taking), background knowledge, and genre awareness. Furthermore, pedagogical implications are made regarding how discourse knowledge should be explicitly taught to all learners of English, given its importance.

      • Relationship between hematologic parameters related to systemic inflammation and insulin resistance in women with polycystic ovary syndrome

( Minkyung Cho ),( Suji Kim ),( Aram Heo ),( Seeun Kwon ),( Sungwook Chun ) 대한산부인과학회 2022 대한산부인과학회 학술대회 Vol.108 No.-

Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between hematologic parameters related to systemic inflammation and insulin resistanceassociated metabolic parameters in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Methods: Eighty-two women aged 18 to 35 years who were diagnosed with PCOS were included in this study. A 2-hour 75g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed on all study participants; fasting glucose and insulin levels and postprandial glucose and insulin levels were measured simultaneously during a 2-hour OGTT. Hematologic parameters were derived from a standard complete blood count and a differential count of fasting-state blood samples. The correlations between hematologic parameters and insulin resistanceassociated clinical and metabolic parameters were evaluated using Spearmans rank correlation and partial correlation coefficients. Unpaired t-test was used to compare hematologic parameters between the two groups categorized according to the presence or absence of insulin resistance. Results: Significant differences in the absolute neutrophil count, absolute monocyte count, platelet count, and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio were found between the insulin resistant group and insulin non-resistant group. Correlation analysis found that all hematological parameters except for the platelet-lymphocyte ratio were associated with at least one or more insulin resistance-associated metabolic parameters. However, these significant correlations between hematological and metabolic parameters all but disappeared after controlling for the effects of other covariates using partial correlation analysis. Conclusion: The association between hematologic parameters indicative of systemic inflammation and insulin resistance-associated metabolic parameters in women with PCOS may be highly influenced by other anthropometric covariates.

Janus colloid surfactant catalysts for in situ organic reactions in Pickering emulsion microreactors

        Cho, Jangwoo,Cho, Jaehong,Kim, Hyeri,Lim, Minkyung,Jo, Hanbyeol,Kim, Hancheul,Min, Sun-Joon,Rhee, Hakjune,Kim, Jin Woong The Royal Society of Chemistry 2018 GREEN CHEMISTRY Vol.20 No.12

This study introduces a Janus colloid surfactant catalyst platform exhibiting remarkable catalytic activity and magnetic responsiveness in Pickering emulsion microreactors. The patching of catalytic nanoparticles (NPs) such as Pd NPs and Ag NPs on amphiphilic Janus microparticles (JMPs) permits the control of catalytic activity for the organic reactions occurring in emulsion droplets. Through model organic reactions including oxidation, amination, and reduction, we show that the JMP catalysts assemble at the reactant-water interface of Pickering emulsions and play an essential role in enhancing the reaction kinetics and product yields. Moreover, when Fe2O3 NPs were co-patched site specifically, the Pickering emulsion droplets showed magnetic responsiveness, thus leading to facile recovery of products and effective recycling of JMP catalysts. The colloid surfactant catalysts developed in our study are expected to advance the environment-friendly catalyst system for green chemistry.

      • Multi-spectral gate-triggered heterogeneous photonic neuro-transistors for power-efficient brain-inspired neuromorphic computing

        Cho, Sung Woon,Kwon, Sung Min,Lee, Minkyung,Jo, Jeong-Wan,Heo, Jae Sang,Kim, Yong-Hoon,Cho, Hyung Koun,Park, Sung Kyu Elsevier 2019 Nano energy Vol.66 No.-

Abstract

For the realization of low-power consumption brain-inspired neuromorphic computing devices which mimic the biological neuronal information processing methodology, the development of photonic transistors capable of synaptic behaviors and neuronal computation have attracted lots of interests. Here, metal-chalcogenide (MC)/metal-oxide (MO) heterogeneous photonic neuro-transistors capable of multi-spectrum triggered synaptic responses and corresponding neuronal computation were developed for an intelligent and energy efficient neuromorphic device. The photonic transistor architecture including a solution-processed broadband photo-active heterogeneous channel and electronic modulatory terminal enable to establish power-saved multi-level writing/reading processing. The multi-spectral gate-triggerings and their synaptic responses were emulated via the broadband absorbing MC/MO heterogeneous semiconducting structure and its defective hetero-interface, which can be fine-tuned by varying photo-spectrum of applied spikes and controlling of interfacial traps in-between, respectively. More importantly, the multi-spectrum triggered heterogeneous photonic neuro-transistors can facilitate wider dynamic and more intelligent neuronal computation such as multi-level dendritic summation and fire behaviors, logic-computation, and associated learning beyond conventional simple synaptic-level photonic devices. The results reported here argue that the multi-spectral activated heterogeneous photonic neuro-transistor outperforms current state-of-neuro-devices, provide a facile and generic route to achieve high-density and energy efficient neuromorphic system.

Highlights

Heterogeneous photonic neuro-transistors capable of multi-spectral neuromorphic computation and low-power operation.

Heterogeneous channel consists of solution-processed ZnSnO and CdS semiconductors.

Power-efficient operation was enabled by heterogeneous channel architecture and modulatory terminal.

All photo-neuromorphic computation dynamics were demonstrated via multi-spectrum gate triggering.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

Marketing the Wang-chobo Identity: Problematic Construction of English Learner Identities in the Advertising Discourse of South Korea’s English Learning Platforms

조민경(Minkyung Cho) 서울대학교 교육종합연구원 2021 The SNU Journal of Education Research Vol.30 No.2

The purpose of this study was to analyze the advertisement discourse of the three most popular online English learning platforms in South Korea and problematize their framing of Koreans as incapable learners of English. The method of critical discourse analysis and multimodal discourse analysis were used to examine how text and visuals in the advertisement discourse portrayed three powerful ideologies of neoliberalism, native- speakerism, and self-deprecation in play. It was found that the idealization of the native speaker standard was interconnected with the self-deprecating tendency of Korean learners of English, who are pressured by the neoliberal logic of self- development to learn English but are not able to attain the unreachable goal of native-like proficiency. Likewise, the study problematized language ideologies in the discourse around English learning in South Korea in order to help Korean learners of English see their English learning experience as valid and valuable, and themselves as capable English speakers.

CCl₄로 유발된 마우스의 실험적 급성간염 모델에서 종간에 따른 자연발생적 간염치유속도에 관한 비교 연구

        조민경(Minkyung Cho),최태생(Taesaeng Choi) 한국실험동물학회 2004 Laboratory Animal Research Vol.20 No.1

Rat has been widely used as a hepatic disease animal including hepatitis and hepatic fibrosis. However, recent studies using mouse-hepatits model have gradually increased than rat. Because of has some advantages like cost and breeding. With high sensitivity of hepatotoxin, delayed recovery time from acute-hepatitis is important factor in hepatitis animal model because it allows sufficient time for administration of testing drugs. In this study, we have investigated the sensitivity and spontaenous recovery times from hepatitis induced by CCl₄ in three mouse strains: Balb/c, C57BL/6 and ICR to find a useful strain as hepatitis model. The sensitivity and spontaenous recovery time were evaluated by the activity of serum ALT and AST, and the contents of tissue collagens. Our results showed the sensitivity of liver injury induced by CCl₄ was similar in all strains. However, spontaenous recovery time is more delayed in Balb/c mice than C57BL/6 and ICR mice. These results would be helpful to make a experimental design for mouse hepatitis model.
