      • Quench properties of superconducting fault current limiters connected in parallel

        Kim, Hye-Rim,Park, Hyo-Sang,Park, Kwon-Bae,Hyun, Ok-Bae,Hwang, Si-Dole The Korean Superconductivity Society 2002 Progress in superconductivity Vol.3 No.2

We investigated the quench properties of superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) connected in parallel. It was carried out as an effort to scale up the current capacity of SFCL toys texts. SFCLs were based on $YBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{7}$ films coated in-situ with a gold layer and fabricated by patterning the films into 2 mm wide and 42 cm long meander lines by photolithography. Two SFCLS were connected in parallel and tested with simulated AC fault currents. Initially the current was divided unequally into branches of parallel connection due to unequal resistance of the branches. However, once quench started in the SFCLs, the current oscillated between the branches and then was distributed nearly equally between the branches. In other words, the elements quenched simultaneously. The oscillation amplitude decreased as the source voltage was increased: the oscillation was the most prominent near the quench current. The observed oscillation and the consequent simultaneous quench was understood in terms of quench start and development in the SFCLs.

Treatment with bisphenol A and methoxychlor results in the growth of human breast cancer cells and alteration of the expression of cell cycle-related genes, cyclin D1 and p21, via an estrogen receptor-dependent signaling pathway.

        Lee, Hye-Rim,Hwang, Kyung-A,Park, Min-Ah,Yi, Bo-Rim,Jeung, Eui-Bae,Choi, Kyung-Chul UNKNOWN 2012 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MOLECULAR MEDICINE Vol.29 No.5

<P>Various endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are exogenous compounds found in the environment and have the potential to interfere with the endocrine system and hormonal regulation. Among EDCs, bisphenol?A (BPA) and 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(4-methoxyphenol)-ethane [methoxychlor (MXC)] have estrogenic activity resulting in a variety of dysfunctions in the E2-mediated response by binding to estrogen receptors (ERs), causing human health problems such as abnormal reproduction and carcinogenesis. In this study, we investigated the effects of BPA and MXC on cell proliferation facilitated by ER signaling in human breast cancer cells. MCF-7 cells are known to be ERα-positive and to be a highly E2-responsive cancer cell line; these cells are, therefore, a useful in?vitro model for detecting estrogenic activity in response to EDCs. We evaluated cancer cell proliferation following BPA and MXC treatment using an MTT assay. We analyzed alterations in the expression of genes associated with the cell cycle in MCF-7 cells by semi-quantitative reverse-transcription PCR following treatment with BPA or MXC compared to EtOH. To determine whether BPA and MXC stimulate cancer cell growth though ER signaling, we co-treated the cells with agonists (propyl pyrazoletriol, PPT; and diarylpropionitrile, DPN) or an antagonist (ICI 182,780) of ER signaling and reduced ERα gene expression via siRNA in MCF-7 cells before treatment with EDCs. These studies confirmed the carcinogenicity of EDCs in?vitro. As a result, BPA and MXC induced the cancer cell proliferation by the upregulation of genes that promote the cell cycle and the downregulation of anti-proliferative genes, especially ones affecting the G1/S transition via ERα signaling. These collective results confirm the carcinogenicity of these EDCs in?vitro. Further studies are required to determine whether EDCs promote carcinogenesis in?vivo.</P>

      • Installation and Testing of SFCLs

        Hye-Rim Kim,Seong-Eun Yang,Seung-Duck Yu,Heesun Kim,Woo-Seok Kim,Kijun Park,Ok-Bae Hyun,Byeong-Mo Yang,Jungwook Sim,Young-Geun Kim IEEE 2012 IEEE transactions on applied superconductivity Vol.22 No.3

<P>A 22.9 kV/630 A-class superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) was installed on a distribution line in Icheon Substation for real-grid operation. The substation is located in a semi-urban area with moderate loads. The SFCL is of hybrid type. After installation it was subjected to a series of on-site tests. Test procedures were determined by following convention in testing both superconductivity-related and not-related specifications of the SFCL. Tests performed were minimum limiting current test, temperature test, dielectric test, and impedance measurement. After successfully passing the tests, the cooling system of the SFCL was operated for more than 5 months under various load conditions to optimize the operation condition. During that period, temperatures, liquid nitrogen level, and internal pressure remained within ±0.1 K, ±0.5 cm, and ±0.5 bar range, proving stability in cooling superconducting elements. The SFCL was then energized and went into real-load operation successfully.</P>

      • Recovery in Superconducting Fault Current Limiters at Low Applied Voltages

        Hye-Rim Kim,Seong-Woo Yim,Sung-Yong Oh,Ok-Bae Hyun IEEE 2008 IEEE transactions on applied superconductivity Vol.18 No.2

<P>We investigated recovery of superconductivity in superconducting fault current limiter elements based on Au/YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) films after the release of faults at low applied voltages. The elements were fabricated by patterning Au/YBCO films. They were subjected to simulated AC fault current, and then to small current for recovery measurements. The samples were immersed in liquid nitrogen during the experiment. After the fault, the resistance decreased monotonously to zero. The decrease was originated from the transition from the normal state to the superconducting state. The applied voltage before the fault release affected the recovery time, but not the decrease rate. The recovery speed depended on the size of samples and was faster in smaller samples. The experimental results were analyzed quantitatively with the concept of recovery propagation. A heat balance equation was derived and solved to explain the linear decrease of resistance during the recovery. The result agreed with data well.</P>

      • Quench Development in Superconducting Fault Current Limiters Based on YBCO Films

        Hye-Rim Kim,Seong-Woo Yim,Sung-Yong Oh,Seung-Deok Yoo,Ok-Bae Hyun IEEE 2009 IEEE transactions on applied superconductivity Vol.19 No.3

<P>We measured and analyzed quench development in superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) based on Au/YBa2Cu3O7 thin films, taking temperature dependence of thermal parameters into consideration. The SFCLs were fabricated by patterning Au/YBCO films grown on 100 mm-diameter sapphire substrates. They were subjected to simulated AC fault currents for quench development measurement. The samples were immersed in liquid nitrogen during the experiment. The quench resistance increased rapidly first and then moderately fast. The increase slowed down afterwards. Data were analyzed quantitatively with the concept of heat transfer within the SFCLs. A heat balance equation was derived and solved, taking into consideration temperature dependence of thermal parameters of sapphire substrates. The solutions agreed with data well. They explained the quench behavior both prior to and after completion of quench propagation. Dependence of quench development on applied voltages could be also understood quantitatively.</P>

      • Demonstration of a Superconducting Fault Current Limiter in a Real Grid

        Hye-Rim Kim,Seung-Duck Yu,Heesun Kim,Woo-Seok Kim,Seong-Eun Yang,Ji-Young Lee,Ok-Bae Hyun IEEE 2013 IEEE transactions on applied superconductivity Vol.23 No.3

<P>A 22.9 kV superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been in operation in a real grid in Korea. The SFCL is of hybrid type, in which the fault current is detected by a superconductor and bypassed by a high-speed switch to a reactor in a parallel circuit for current limitation. It has a current rating of 630 A, and has been operated in a distribution line in Icheon Substation, which is located in a suburban area with moderate loads. The SFCL has been operated very stably with no degradation in performance. Temperatures and level of the liquid nitrogen cooling the superconductors have been maintained within 0.1 K and 0.3 cm, respectively, under large daily load variation of about 100 A. Performance of the SFCL was tested by measuring minimum limitation current and impedance of the SFCL, and was proved to maintain the initial level of performance. There was a single line-to-ground fault event in the distribution line where the SFCL has been operated, and the SFCL limited the fault current successfully. Data analysis showed that the SFCL limited the current as designed. These results proved reliability and performance of the SFCL.</P>
