        Morphology and Molecular Characterization of Alternaria argyranthemi on Chrysanthemum coronarium in China

        Chrysanthemum coronarium is an economically important plant in Asia, and used medicinally, ornamentally and as a vegetable. In April 2017, leaf spot disease on C. coronarium was observed in Shiyan, Hubei, China. A single-spore isolate was obtained and identified based on morphology and sequence analysis using four regions (rDNA ITS, GAPDH, EF-1a, and RPB2). The results indicated that the fungus is Alternaria argyranthemi. The pathogenicity tests revealed that the species could cause severe leaf spot and blight disease on the host. This is the first report of leaf spot disease on C. coronarium caused by A. argyranthemi in the world, which is also a new record of Alternaria species in China.

      • Study the Thermal Behaviours for Asphalt Concrete Mixed with Basic Oxygen Furnace Slags

        In Taiwan, the basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slags are characterized as porous material and with better heat insulation than that of the natural aggregates. The BOF slags have been applied to the pavement as parts of the natural aggregate replacement. The asphalt concrete (AC) with the BOF slags replacements were well recognized and performed. In this study, parts of natural aggregates were replaced by the BOF slags in the AC helping resolve the gradual shortage of the natural resources and save energy and reduce the produce of carbon. In this study, parts of the natural aggregates were replaced by the coarse and fine BOF slags in the construction of AC. Because the thermal insulation and heat absorption are different between BOF slags and natural aggregates, the infrared thermal conductivity measuring instrument was applied to obtain the surface temperatures presented as thermal infrared images in AC. Then, the infrared temperature distribution images were obtained by using the image transformation techniques. The results show that the thermal conductivity for the AC containing with fine BOF slag was larger than that for the coarse BOF slag. The BOG slag replacement in AC helped improve the thermal insulation in AC. Moreover, the temperature was more uniformly distributed for AC with the fine BOF slag than that for the coarse BOF slag replacement. However, the coarse BOF slag was better in the preserve of energy for AC than that of the fine BOF slag.

        Morphology and Molecular Characteristics of Alternaria sonchi Causing Brown Leaf Spot on Sonchus asper in Korea

        During a disease survey on weeds and minor cultivated crops in Korea, a brown leaf spot disease was ob- served on Sonchus asper. Leaf lesions were round or irregular in shape, and grayish brown to brown with a purple margin. In severe infection, lesions enlarged and coalesced, resulting in blighting of the leaves. The isolates from these leaf lesions were identified as Alternaira sonchi based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses of Internal transcribed spacer region, Alternaria allergen a1, glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase, RNA polymerase II, and translation elongation factor genes. This study pro- vides a comprehensive description of the morphological characteristics and phylogenetical traits of A. sonchi causing brown leaf spot on S. asper in Korea.

        Identification and Characterization of Alternaria iridiaustralis Causing Leaf Spot on Iris ensata in China

        In 2016, a severe leaf spot disease was found on Iris ensata Thumb. in Nanjing, China. The symptom was elliptical, fusiform, or irregularly necrotic lesion surrounded by a yellow halo, from which a small-spored Alternaria species was isolated. The fungus was identified as Alternaria iridiaustralis based on morphological characteristics. The pathogenicity tests revealed that the fungus was the causal pathogen of the disease. Phylogenic analyses using sequences of ITS, gpd, endoPG, and RPB2 genes confirmed the morphological identification. This study is the first report of A. iridiaustralis causing leaf spots on I. ensata in China.

        Refining Characteristics of Hardwood Pulp Using Straight- and Curved-bar Plates: A Time Series Study

        There are obvious differences in the refining characteristics of plates with straight bars compared to curved bar plates having the same bar parameters during refining. The objective of this research is to explore the difference in the refining characteristics of the straight bar and curved bar plates on experimental and theoretical studies. The bar angle of the curved bar plate is defined, and the two plates are used in the refining of bleached sulphate eucalyptus pulp (BSEP). Samples at different refining times were collected, and the properties of the fibers, pulp, and paper were detected and analyzed. It was found that the curved bar and straight bar plates have a similar influence on the pulp SR freeness. However, the curved bar plate effectively retained the fiber length, which means that its fiber cutting effect is weaker than that of the straight bar plate. Meanwhile, the fiber external fibrillation of the samples refined by the curved bar plate was better than that of the samples refined by the straight bar, which showed a higher tensile and tear index of the formed paper. Through the theoretical analysis of refining intensity via characterization of the parameter bar edge length (BEL), the specific edge load (SEL) of the curved bar plate was lower, and the refining characteristics predicted by the refining intensity were similar to the results from the experiments conducted in this paper.

        Study on Fiber Cutting Performance of Isometric Straight Bar Plate with Different Bar Angle

        The refining plate is a direct-acting component of refiners in pulping, and the bar profile of it have a major impact on fiber cutting, which affects the paper forming and strength of the formed paper. In this paper, the fiber average length, the fiber length distribution, the original fiber cutting rate and adjacent fiber cutting rate of samples collected in different refining time are used to analyze the fiber cutting mechanism of the isometric straight bar refining plates with different bar angles. The results show that the fiber cutting performance of plates gradually decreases and the limit fiber cutting length of the plate increases with the increase of the bar angle which is opposite to the conclusion predicted by specific edge load (SEL). However, the fiber cutting action of plates is gradually weakened until the average fiber length is reduced to the limit cutting length of plates. Meanwhile, the cutting mechanism of the straight bar plates with different bar angles is different. The larger bar angle of plate, the lower fiber cutting rate and the adjacent cutting rate of which is basically kept constant during refining, while the adjacent cutting rate of smaller bar angle plate on fibers gradually decreases with refining and finally remains constant. The study on the cutting performance of different bar angle plates has positive significance for the selection and design of refining plates for different pulping process.

        Multi-strategy structural damage detection based on included angle of vectors and sparse regularization

        Recently, many structural damage detection (SDD) methods have been proposed to monitor the safety of structures. As an important modal parameter, mode shape has been widely used in SDD, and the difference of vectors was adopted based on sensitivity analysis and mode shapes in the existing studies. However, amplitudes of mode shapes in different measured points are relative values. Therefore, the difference of mode shapes will be influenced by their amplitudes, and the SDD results may be inaccurate. Focus on this deficiency, a multi-strategy SDD method is proposed based on the included angle of vectors and sparse regularization in this study. Firstly, inspired by modal assurance criterion (MAC), a relationship between mode shapes and changes in damage coefficients is established based on the included angle of vectors. Then, frequencies are introduced for multi-strategy SDD by a weighted coefficient. Meanwhile, sparse regularization is applied to improve the ill-posedness of the SDD problem. As a result, a novel convex optimization problem is proposed for effective SDD. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, numerical simulations in a planar truss and experimental studies in a six-story aluminum alloy frame in laboratory are conducted. The identified results indicate that the proposed method can effectively reduce the influence of noises, and it has good ability in locating structural damages and quantifying damage degrees.

        Anti-sparse representation for structural model updating using l∞ norm regularization

        Finite element (FE) model based structural damage detection (SDD) methods play vital roles in effectively locating and quantifying structural damages. Among these methods, structural model updating should be conducted before SDD to obtain benchmark models of real structures. However, the characteristics of updating parameters are not reasonably considered in existing studies. Inspired by the l∞ norm regularization, a novel anti-sparse representation method is proposed for structural model updating in this study. Based on sensitivity analysis, both frequencies and mode shapes are used to define an objective function at first. Then, by adding l∞ norm penalty, an optimization problem is established for structural model updating. As a result, the optimization problem can be solved by the fast iterative shrinkage thresholding algorithm (FISTA). Moreover, comparative studies with classical regularization strategy, i.e. the l2 norm regularization method, are conducted as well. To intuitively illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, a 2-DOF spring-mass model is taken as an example in numerical simulations. The updating results show that the proposed method has a good robustness to measurement noises. Finally, to further verify the applicability of the proposed method, a six-storey aluminum alloy frame is designed and fabricated in laboratory. The added mass on each storey is taken as updating parameter. The updating results provide a good agreement with the true values, which indicates that the proposed method can effectively update the model parameters with a high accuracy.

        Experiences of East Asian International Counseling Students during the COVID-19 Pandemic

        International counseling students, especially those from East Asia, were more vulnerable during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic than their domestic counterparts. In the current study, we explored the lived experiences of ten master’s level East Asian international counseling students (EAICS) during the COVID-19 pandemic using a phenomenological design. Four overarching themes emerged from the analysis: (a) transition in COVID-19 pandemic, (b) being culturally minoritized, (c) positive experiences of the counseling program, and (d) positive action. The critical role of the academic community in supporting this marginalized group against racism and xenophobia and practical ways of facilitating EAICS’s professional development are discussed.
