Van Hau NGUYEN,Thi Thu Cuc NGUYEN,Van Thu NGUYEN,Duc Tai DO 한국유통과학회 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.5

The higher the firm performance, the more chances enterprises can expand and develop their production, create jobs, and improve the workers’ living quality. The main objective of this study was to measure the internal factors influencing the firm’s performance of food and beverage (F&B) firms listed on the Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX). Data was collected on 15 F&B firms listed on the HNX from 2015 to 2019 We use mixed research method, both qualitative and quantitative. For the quantitative research method, the supporting tool is Stata13 software. The results via Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression method show the impacts of internal factors with the following observed variables: the ratio of short-term debt to total liabilities (CS1) and total assets (S2) have an opposite impact (–) on ROA and ROE; debt-to-total assets ratio (CS2) has an opposite effect (–) on ROA; growth of total assets (G2) of the growth factor positively affects (+) ROA and ROE, the remaining factors do not affect ROA and ROE; and internal factors do not influence ROS. Based on the findings, some recommendations have been proposed to help the F&B firms listed on the Hanoi Stock Exchange improving their firm performance in the future.

Intention to Accept Organic Agricultural Production of Vietnamese Farmers: An Investigation Using the Theory of Planned Behavior

NGUYEN, Van Hau,NGUYEN, Thi Phuong Linh Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.10

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the factors influencing the Vietnamese farmers' intention to accept organic farming based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB). After in-depth interviews with five agricultural researchers and five farmers, the authors have identified a formal research model and built a complete survey. Data were collected from 318 farmers in Hanoi, Vietnam, by surveying directly at their homes or farms. Statistical methods, such as Cronbach's alpha, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and linear regression analysis, were used to analyze the data with the help of SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 24.0. The results show that attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control have a positive influence on farmers' intention to accept organic farming in Vietnam. Based on the degree of impact of these factors, the authors give a few suggestions to state management agencies to promote the intention to accept organic farming in Vietnam: (i) increasing awareness of the difference between organic farming and conventional farming, the role of organic farming in health and the environment; (ii) increasing the activities of guiding the organic farming practices and facilitating the farmers to access these guides through many channels; and (iii) holding sessions to share practices in organic farming practices.

Biological Image Edge Extraction Based on Adaptive Beamlet Transform

Nguyen, Van Hau,Woo, Kyung-Haeng,Choi, Won-Ho The Korea Institute of Convergence Signal Processi 2011 융합신호처리학회 논문지 (JISPS) Vol.12 No.2

In cell biology area, microscopy enables detecting objects inside cells that are stained or fluorescently tagged. It is disadvantageous for observing these objects because of the noisy characteristics of their environmental surrounding. In this paper, a framework is proposed to increase the throughput and reliability for analysis of these images. First, we apply adaptive beamlet transform to extract edges meaningfully followed by orientation, location, and length in different scales. Then, a post-process is implemented to extend and map them onto original image. Our proposed scheme is compared with Canny edge detector and conventional beamlet transform from four evaluation aspects. It produces better results when experiments are conducted on real images. Much better results for observing internal parts make this framework competitive for analysis of cell images.

Point-of-care genetic analysis for multiplex pathogenic bacteria on a fully integrated centrifugal microdevice with a large-volume sample

Nguyen, Hau Van,Nguyen, Van Dan,Lee, Eun Yeol,Seo, Tae Seok Elsevier 2019 Biosensors & bioelectronics Vol.136 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We present a fully integrated portable centrifugal microsystem for multiplex detection of food poisoning bacteria with a large volume of sample up to 1 mL. The microsystem consists of a portable genetic analyzer and a fully integrated centrifugal microdevice. The centrifugal microdevice is designed with two units: a 3D printed solution-loading cartridge and a centrifugal microfluidic disc. All the essential solutions for loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) reaction are stored inside the cartridge, and orderly released into centrifugal microdevice by a rotation program. Each unit of the device is designed with 20 reaction chambers for simultaneous detection of food-borne bacteria in one test. To increase the amount of a sample to 1 mL, we incorporated the super absorbent polymer (SAP) in the waste chamber to absorb the sample and the washing solution during the device operation. The whole process was automatically conducted including designated solution release, bead-based DNA extraction, isothermal gene amplification by Eriochrome Black (EBT)-mediated LAMP reaction, and colorimetric and UV–visible detection of amplicons. The ratio between Abs640nm and Abs570nm was used as a criterion to confirm the positive result, and the result was positive upon the condition of Abs640/Abs570 ≥ 1.0. To demonstrate the pathogenic bacteria detection on our proposed microsystem, we targeted three kinds of bacteria (<I>Escherichia coli</I> O157:H7, <I>Salmonella typhimurium</I>, and <I>Vibrio parahaemolyticus</I>) for monoplex and multiplex detection. The whole process from sample to result was completed within 1 h with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 102 cells/mL.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A fully integrated centrifugal microfluidic device for POC DNA diagnostics is presented. </LI> <LI> Super absorption polymer (SAP) integration enables to handle 1 mL volume of a sample. </LI> <LI> A 3D-printed sample loading cartridge is combined for full automation of solution injection. </LI> <LI> A portable genetic analyzer is proposed for POCT. </LI> <LI> Sample-to-answer diagnostics of food-borne pathogens are demonstrated with low LOD. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Magnetic Resonance Image Processing Based on FPGAs

        Hau-Nguyen Van,Kyung Haeng Woo,Won-Ho Choi 대한전기학회 2010 정보 및 제어 심포지엄 논문집 Vol.2010 No.4

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays an important role for medical imaging technology in brain anatomical studies. Many automatic algorithms have been proposed for analyzing magnetic resonance imaging data sets. With the increasingly large data sets being used in mapping, there are some limitations of the manual algorithms, such as long computation time and issues regarding reproducibility. There has been a significant rise in the need for accelerating these algorithms. This paper handled the partial volume estimation (PVE), a brain tissue classification algorithm for MRI, on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) as high performance reconfigurable computer using the Mitrion-C high-level language (HLL). FPGAs are very flexible and could achieve significant performance improvement by exploiting parallelism in processing. We used several simulated and real human brain MRI to evaluate the performance improvement of the proposed algorithm. The performance of probability density and prior information estimation implementation based on FPGAs achieved the overall speedup.

Influences of External Factors on Business Performance of Domestic Animal Feed Enterprises in Vietnam

Van Hau NGUYEN,Thi Quynh Lien DUONG,To Thi Huong QUYNH,To Thi Thu TRANG 한국유통과학회 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.11

Vietnam is the country with the largest animal feed production in Southeast Asia. Domestic animal feed manufacturing enterprises play an important role in animal husbandry in particular and in agriculture in general. However, domestic animal feed enterprises in Vietnam are encountering shortcomings. This paper is conducted to investigate the impact levels of external determinants on business performance of domestic animal feed manufacturing enterprises, including: (i) policy and economic mechanism, (ii) supply-demand of animal feed products, and (iii) nature and level of market competition. We presented a research method, explaining the dependent variable ‘business performance’ and the independent variables. Data were collected from 120 questionnaires from domestic animal feed manufacturing enterprises. Based on these data, we use Cronbach’s Alpha, EFA and run regression model for assessing the impact levels of each independent variable on the dependent variable of business performance of domestic animal feed manufacturing enterprises. The results show that three external determinants including (i) policy and economic mechanism, (ii) supply-demand of animal feed products, and (iii) nature and level of market competition, have positive relationships with business performance. Based on the findings, some recommendations are given for improving business performance of domestic animal feed manufacturing enterprises to ensure sustainability.

A Fast Adaptive Corner Detection Based on Curvature Scale Space

        Nguyen, Van Hau,Woo, Kyung-Haeng,Choi, Won-Ho Korea Multimedia Society 2011 멀티미디어학회논문지 Vol.14 No.5

Corners play an important role in describing object features for pattern recognition and identification. This paper proposed a fast and adaptive corner detector in both coarse and fine scale, followed by the framework of the curvature scale space (CSS). An adaptive curvature threshold and evaluating of angles of corner candidates are added to original CSS to remove round corners and false corners in the detecting process. The efficiency of proposed method is compared to other popular detectors in both accuracy criteria, stability and time consuming. Results illustrate that the proposed method performs extremely surpass in both areas.

Kinetics of microbial selenite reduction by novel bacteria isolated from activated sludge

Nguyen, Van Khanh,Nguyen, Trung Hau,Ha, Myung-Gyu,Kang, Ho Young Elsevier 2019 Journal of environmental management Vol.236 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A total of three bacteria isolated from activated sludge of a wastewater treatment plant were found to reduce selenite to elemental selenium nanoparticles as both amorphous nanospheres and monoclinic nanocrystals. The three isolated strains, which are potential candidates for bioremediation of selenite-contaminated water sources, were designated as <I>Citrobacter</I> sp. NVK-2, <I>Providencia</I> sp. NVK-2A, and <I>Citrobacter</I> sp. NVK-6 based on 16S rRNA sequencing. Despite belonging to the same genus, the kinetics of selenite reduction by strain NVK-2 (<I>V</I> max = 58.82 μM h−1, <I>K</I> <I>m</I> = 3737.12 μM) completely differed from that of strain NVK-6 (<I>V</I> max = 19.23 μM h−1, <I>K</I> <I>m</I> = 1300.17 μM). The selenite reduction rate by strain NVK-2A (<I>V</I> max = 9.26 μM h−1, <I>K</I> <I>m</I> = 3044.73 μM) was the slowest among the investigated microorganisms. The microbial selenite reduction rates according to various organic sources indicated that simple organic sources such as acetate and lactate were better than more complex organic sources such as propionate, butyrate, and glucose for selenite removal. Interestingly, the selenite reduction rate was significantly enhanced when the organic source was strategically divided into small portions and consecutively supplied to the culture.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Kinetics of microbial Se(IV) reduction was well fitted with Michaelis-Menten model. </LI> <LI> Strain NVK-2 was the most potent strain for Se removal and recovery. </LI> <LI> Both amorphous and crystallized elemental Se was found as Se(IV)-reduction products. </LI> <LI> Simple carbon sources were better than complex carbon sources for Se(IV) removal. </LI> </UL> </P>
