This project examines the meaning of the term counseling ethics and explores its interaction and relationship with the discipline of ethics. The relation between theory and practice in counseling ethics is a primary area of focus in this investigation. Other topics include but are not limited to: the distinction between ethical and legal issues in counseling, codes of ethics, ethical decision-making in counseling, and ethics education in relation to counselor training. Quasi-qualitative methodology was utilized in conducting and analyzing interviews with seven respondents possessing expertise in ethical and/or legal issues in counseling and psychology. The following individuals participated in this project as respondents: L. DiAnne Borders, Gerald Corey, Harriet Glosoff, Barbara Herlihy, Karen Kitchener, Ted Remley, Jr., and, Holly Stadler. All respondents have written extensively on ethical and/or legal issues in counseling and have served in a variety of professional leadership positions in counseling or psychology. In addition to the seven case studies presenting the information that emerged during the course of the interviews and responses to follow-up questions, themes are discussed in relation to the counseling/psychology and ethics literature. The results of this project help clarify the current status of counseling ethics in relation to theory and practices.

This study examined perceptions and attitudes toward seeking counseling of 20 Chinese international graduate students through semi-structured interviews. Using consensual qualitative research methodology (Hill, Thompson & Williams, 1997), 12 domains were identified in relation to students' perceptions, attitudes, needs, expectations, and experiences related to psychological counseling. Results indicated that Chinese students in this study were generally aware of the concept of psychological counseling, but were varied in their knowledge about counseling process and services. The majority of the participants perceived the counseling process as a medical or consultation model, while several of them saw counseling as a way for people to talk things out and release stress. Participants' image about counseling was gained primarily from the media (e.g., movies, TV shows), while some of them reported knowing counseling from taking psychology courses or hearing from friends/teachers who majored in psychology. They typically perceived that it is normal to seek counseling in the U.S. but not in China, and Americans value counseling more than Chinese. Participants had different attitudes toward seeking counseling. Many believed that counseling would help, while others doubted the usefulness of counseling, especially when they considered their issues as practical issues. While several participants had prior counseling experience, most of the participants had never thought about seeking counseling. They typically reported lack of needs for counseling unless having severe issues that would affect their normal functioning. Over half of the participants reported concerns about stigma, confidentiality, or practical barriers (cost, time, convenience) to seek counseling. Additionally, participants had different views about language and cultural concerns for seeking counseling in the U.S. Half of the participants stated concerns about language, especially using English to describe feelings or complicated issues, and lack of trust in U.S. counselors to really understand their concerns as Chinese and/or as international students. Another half reported no concerns about language or cultural issues, and believed that psychological issues were similar across cultures. The study also included participants' expectations for counseling and strategies in coping with stress while not seeking counseling. Implications of the findings for university mental health professionals are discussed. Key words. Chinese international students, counseling, help-seeking attitude, perception of counseling, expectation for counseling, coping with Stress.

Female gender has been consistently associated with positive psychological help-seeking attitudes and behaviors. However, career-interrupted women are reluctant to seek counseling in coping with their own psychological problem even though they suffer from psychological distress caused by career breaks. Getting a better understanding of factors that influence career-interrupted women’s willingness to seek counseling may help professionals in the field to better access distressed women who might otherwise avoid counseling. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of 2 mediators(psychological distress and attitudes toward counseling) on the perceived stress in career-interrupted women to professional help-seeking intentions such as psychological counseling. To accomplish this purpose, the researcher has analyzed the results of the self-reported questionnaires data from 320 career-interrupted women. The study investigated the mediating effect by using SPSS Process Macro program and the result of the study is as follows. Perceived stress of career-interrupted women indirectly influenced by psychological distress but not directly with willingness to seek counseling. In other words, the higher the perceived stress, the higher the psychological distress and the more intention to seek counseling. On the other hand, the direct path from perceived stress to attitudes toward counseling was not significant but indirectly influenced by mediating psychological distress. However, unlike the expectation, psychological distress affects negatively on the attitudes toward counseling, and additional analysis was performed to confirm the suppressive effect of attitudes toward counseling variable. Based on the discussion of the research results, researcher has examined the psychological help-seeking process of career-interrupted women and proposed a method to provide counseling services in actual counseling field. Limitations and implications for future research and practice are discussed.

CHEN XIN

With the advancement of globalization, China and Korea have developed closer political and economic relations leading to accelerated cultural art and education exchanges. The number of international students who choose to study in Korea has been continuously increasing. International students are making great efforts to adapt to the changes in social and cultural environments in Korea. As of June 30, 2022, Chinese international students, who account for the most significant proportion of students studying in Korea, needed help looking for a need for smoother communicative skills in Korean. As a result, about 6.4%of Chinese international students are eliminated yearly from their studies due to accumulated academic warnings(Higher Education in Korea, 2022). In addition, various psychological maladjustments, such as loneliness, anxiety, and depression caused by a lack of ability to cope with human relationships or new environments and a lack of social support resources, were causing these Chinese international students to experience difficulties in their life in Korea. Therefore, it is now urgent to provide practical counseling services to assist Chinese students in Korea to adapt well to Korean society and culture and live a stable life abroad. However, in reality, there were very few support services, such as counseling models or psychological interventions to solve the psychological maladjustment of international students. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to identify the psychological maladjustment experienced by Chinese international students in Korea and developed a structured personal counseling model to help them uccessfully complete their studies abroad. This structured counseling model was expected to develop multicultural counseling capabilities as it can be a framework to be used more efficiently by novice counselors who still need to gain counseling capabilities and skills. To achieve the purpose of this study, the following research questions were established. First, how is the counseling model for psychological adjustment of Chinese students in Korea organized? Second, is the counseling model for psychological adjustment of Chinese students in Korea valid? To verify these research problems, this study developed a counseling model to help Chinese international students' psychological adjustment in Korea according to the four stages of planning, composition, implementation, and evaluation suggested by KimChang-dae, Kim Hyung-soo, Shin Eul-Jin, Lee Sang-hee, and Choi Han-na (2011). First, in the counseling model planning stage, theoretical consideration was conducted through prior research for model design, through which the necessity and validity of developing a counseling model for Chinese international students in Korea were confirmed. Based on this, Chinese international students and counselors at the university counseling center in Korea were surveyed through questionnaires and in-depth interviews to extract the contents essential for planning the counseling model. Second, in the counseling model composition stage, procedures and step-by-step goals of the psychological adjustment assistance counseling model were established based on the results of literature analysis and demand analysis, and based on this, the components of the model, counseling intervention strategies, and counseling techniques were selected and organized. In addition, an expert review was conducted to review the efficiency of the counseling model and supplement the limitations. Through this process, a preliminary model was constructed by evaluating and verifying the efficiency of the components of the selected counseling model. While constructing the preliminary model, the draft counseling model was revised and supplemented based on consultation with experts. The preliminary model was revised and supplemented through the opinions of experts who went through a preliminary counseling process for Chinese international students in Korea, and the final counseling model was confirmed after problems and limitations were corrected and supplemented. Third, in implementing the counseling model stage, the effect was verified by applying the developed counseling model to the actual counseling scene with Chinese students in Korea. In this process, problems and limitations of the counseling model were re-identified through continuous monitoring of the counseling application, and information was collected. Lastly, in evaluating the counseling model stage, the results of practically applying the counseling model were analyzed, and the effect was verified. At this stage, in-depth interviews with the client and the counselor on quantitative evaluation and counseling satisfaction were conducted together. The quantitative evaluation process verified the differences between the experimental and control group, and the statistical analysis was conducted using the nonparametric tests, Mann-Whitney U Test, and the Wilcoxon Signed-rank Test. The analysis results showed that the experimental group significantly reduced the problems of depression, anxiety, and loneliness that caused psychological maladjustment. However, there was no statistically significant difference in the control group. Next, in-depth interviews were conducted to compensate for the limitations of quantitative evaluation to identify the individual empirical aspects and in-depth changes of the study subjects applying this counseling model. The counseling model developed in this study can be verified to be effective. This study developed a structured counseling model that can be applied to counseling dealing with the psychological maladjustment of Chinese students in Korea and proved its practicality. Through this, if a counseling model that can be specifically applied in the counseling scene with international students is provided, this counseling model can be used to develop the capabilities and competency of counselors in charge of Chinese international students in Korea. As such, this counseling model is a tool that can supplement the limitations of the counseling field for Chinese students in Korea and is an effective model to help Chinese students' psychological adjustment in Korea. Consequently, the results of this study can be used as primary data for the education of counselors or the development of training programs and tools in the future.

In our sedentary society, physical inactivity has become the biggest public health concern of the 21st century. In addition to physical health promotion, physical activity has been associated with a number of positive psychological and social outcomes. Psychologists are well positioned to provide physical activity counseling and may have ethical obligations to address physical activity with their clients. Training the next generation of psychologists about the role of physical activity and health is critical to ensure best practices in graduate education. Researchers have cited insufficient training as a barrier to integrating physical activity into clinical work, yet little is known about effective training in physical activity counseling. One way to address these barriers is to employ an online-based training program allowing greater accessibility for doctoral psychology students across the United States. This exploratory study evaluated the effectiveness of a constructivist online interactive intervention, and compared it with a more traditional online content intervention and a control group, for enhancing doctoral psychology students' self-efficacy in using physical activity counseling. It was hypothesized that 1) online interactive intervention would enhance self-efficacy, knowledge, and use of physical activity counseling compared to the online content intervention; and 2) both of these active treatments would yield improvements in physical activity counseling outcomes (e.g. self-efficacy, knowledge of health benefits of exercise, practice of physical activity counseling with clients, and personal level physical activity) compared with a control group. Results partially supported the original hypotheses. Mixed ANCOVA analyses indicated that participants in both intervention groups showed more self-efficacy at post-intervention assessment compared to their control group peers but the interactive intervention was not more effective than the content based intervention. Participants in the intervention groups demonstrated more targeted knowledge of physical activity counseling at post-intervention compared to their control group peers. No differences were found in the practice of physical activity counseling with clients post intervention. This study indicates there may be promise in using online platforms for enhancing physical activity counseling self-efficacy among psychologists in training. Future studies should continue to assess the effectiveness of physical activity counseling and refine training interventions to examine the effects of such interventions among the next generation of psychologists.

Our study was conducted to examine graduate student counselors' perceptions of their counseling competence and multicultural counseling competence, and whether these perceptions differ in association with client culture. Participants in our study were 44 White (92% female) and 24 Latino American (96% female) master's level graduate students at counselor education programs at four universities in the southeastern United States. Research packets were distributed to the directors of the graduate counselor education programs, who in turn randomly distributed these packets to students. The questionnaires constituting each research packet assessed the following: perceived general counseling competence and multicultural counseling competence; perceived competence for counseling minority, gay, Latino American, and other various cultural minority clients; demographics; and how the terms "minority" and "multicultural counseling" are defined. For the mostly female White participants, but not the mostly female Latino American participants, results revealed a significant positive association between multicultural counseling competence and perceived competence for counseling clients who are racially different, and between general counseling competence and multicultural counseling competence. The Latino American participants, but not the White participants, perceived themselves as differentially competent at counseling minority, gay, and Latino American clients. For the entire sample there were no significant differences in general counseling competence and multicultural counseling competence in association with levels of counselor training and experience. Qualitative content analyses revealed that the White participants defined minorities as not representing the majority in terms of race, economic status, and gender. The Latino American participants defined minorities as being disadvantaged recipients of discrimination and belonging to a group. The White and Latino American participants defined multicultural counseling as counseling with someone who is different in terms of ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation. It was concluded from our study that the association between general counseling competence and multicultural counseling competence may not be the same for the mostly female White and Latino American participants. Results also indicated that there are significant differences in how the White and the Latino American participants perceive their abilities to counsel culturally different clients, and in how they define the term "minority.".

The current study used qualitative methods to examine the perspectives and experiences of 18 peer-nominated exemplars of social justice practice in psychology and counseling. A 9 question semi-structured interview was conducted with each participant addressing 4 research questions: What is social justice in counseling and psychology? How did the exemplar develop his or her orientation towards social justice? What challenges are associated with the exemplar's social justice work? How does the exemplar maintain his or her vitality and resiliency? The data was analyzed using Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) methods. A total of 51 themes emerged from 1,061 minutes (17 hours, 41 minutes) of interview data. These themes were grouped into 13 domains. The results present a nuanced picture of the practice of social justice in counseling and psychology, an engaging, personal perspective on the development of social justice orientation, a detailed examination of the challenges associated with social justice work, and key practices that can be used to sustain vitality and resiliency. The research process and results show that psychologists, counselors, social workers, family therapists, and other mental health practitioners are actively engaged in social justice work and have developed a thoughtful, cohesive set of practices that can be informative to those in practice, training, and research.

This evaluation was a three pronged study which examined the availability of the program's resources, investigated the detectable effects of family counseling on student achievement and behavior, and reported the satisfaction of the major stakeholders. A private educational company administered family counseling, as one service of a comprehensive Parent Involvement Program, to 44 elementary, nonpublic (Catholic) schools in an urban area. The program, funded by Title I monies, served low income families. There were 446 students from 433 families who participated in family counseling. Students were referred for counseling for one of three concerns: (a) learning, (b) behavior, and (c) learning and behavior. Using both surveys and interviews which tapped the perspectives of the various stakeholders (principals, teachers, parents, and program professionals) the objectives of the program evaluation were met. Also, final grades in reading, math, effort, and conduct, as well as number of absences from the end of the study year (June 1999) were collected and compared with the same information from the previous year (June 1998) for the students in family counseling. Key findings, as reported by the teachers, included improved interactions between the referred students and teachers as well as improved interactions between the referred students and their peers. These effects were demonstrated for students who were referred for behavior, and for learning and behavior concerns. Some learning effects were also reported for students referred for behavior concerns. Other findings included: (a) The final grades for referred students in most subject areas remained stable from the past year to the current year except for those students who received ten or more counseling sessions. Those students demonstrated a significant drop in their reading grade. (b) Most parents, when given specific referrals to ameliorate their children's problems acted in their children's behalf. (c) The program professional facilitated better communication and understanding between parents and teachers. (d) Parents reported positive changes in their children's behavior and greater parent involvement. (e) Parents and principals reported a high level of satisfaction with the family counseling program. (f) The program resources were available and in place for the stakeholders during the year.
