This study aims to design an effective instructional model to address the difficulties that Vietnamese learners of Korean encounter when acquiring the verb-combined past tense adnominal endings ‘-(으)ㄴ’, ‘-던’, and ‘-았/었던’.
Korean and Vietnamese differ greatly in their syntactic structures. In particular, Vietnamese has neither verbal inflection nor stem alternation, and adnominal phrases follow the noun, whereas in Korean complex sentences an adnominal clause is formed by attaching an adnominal ending to the verb and placing it before the noun. For this reason, the Korean syntactic structure in which verb-combined adnominal endings form an adnominal clause constitutes a highly demanding grammatical category for Vietnamese learners. Furthermore, Korean has several adnominal endings used to describe past situations, such as ‘-(으)ㄴ’, ‘-던’, and ‘-았/었던’, whose meanings are intertwined with tense, aspect, and modality and shift depending on discourse context. Vietnamese learners therefore need to develop the ability to fully understand the semantic categories of each ending, process contextual information, and select contextually appropriate forms. By contrast, in Vietnamese adnominal clauses referring to past situations, the grammatical function corresponding to Korean adnominal endings is typically realized not by inflectional endings but by functional words such as đã or by temporal adverbs, which tend to be omitted when they are recoverable from context. As a result, Vietnamese learners tend to map Korean past adnominal endings almost uniformly onto Vietnamese đã and often fail to perceive the finer semantic distinctions among ‘-(으)ㄴ’, ‘-던’, and ‘-았/었던’. Consequently, in actual use they either rely excessively on a single preferred ending or select endings purely on intuition, without establishing clear criteria for context-sensitive ending choice.
On the basis of this problem awareness, the present study first conducted a systematic review of previous research to organize the semantic categories and usage conditions of verb-combined past adnominal endings and to describe the characteristics of their Vietnamese equivalents, thereby establishing the theoretical foundation of the study. Subsequently, a survey was administered to 34 Vietnamese university students majoring in Korean-related fields at a university in Vietnam. The survey consisted of a grammaticality judgment test, a translation test, a writing task, and a perception questionnaire, supplemented by follow-up interviews, in order to examine learners’ actual usage patterns of the target grammar and the criteria underlying their choices from multiple angles. The analysis revealed that learners did not exhibit serious difficulty in producing the target endings as forms; however, they tended to regard ‘-(으)ㄴ’, ‘-던’, and ‘-았/었던’ vaguely as endings that all simply indicate “past,” to rely heavily on the most familiar ending ‘-(으)ㄴ’, and to avoid using ‘-던’ and ‘-았/었던’. It was also confirmed that there has been little systematic instruction on the semantic categories of these endings and on the conditions under which they can alternate with one another.
In response, this study argues that there is a need for an integrated comparative lesson targeting Vietnamese learners who have already been introduced to the verb-combined past adnominal endings ‘-(으)ㄴ’, ‘-던’, and ‘-았/었던’, in which the meanings, uses, and mutual substitutability of these endings are dealt with in an integrated and explicit manner. From the perspective of the focus-on-form approach, the study proposes an integrated comparative instructional model for these three endings, reconstructed by incorporating flipped learning into the NDAE model, which draws learners’ attention to grammatical phenomena and raises grammatical awareness. It is expected that this instructional model will enhance Vietnamese learners’ grammatical awareness of verb-combined past tense adnominal endings, improve their ability to select and use contextually appropriate endings in discourse, and ultimately contribute to the simultaneous development of both fluency and accuracy in describing past events.
