The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of cognitive-behavioral group counseling on high level social university students' social anxiety and self-concept.
The hypothesises of this study are as follows:
First. cognitive-behavioral group counseling will decrease high level social university students' social anxiety.
Second, cognitive-behavioral group counseling will improve high level social university students' self-concept.
This researcher screened thirty-four national university students who got to 82 scores or above from Korean-Social Avoidance & Distress(K-SAD). There were sixteen university students that want to participate in group counseling from among thirty-four students. So those students were randomly assigned to either experimental or control group. The experimental group consisted of eight students were treated to group counseling, while the control group consisted of another eight students were not treated to except a series of test. The cognitive-behavioral group counseling was carried out three times a week for eight sessions during two weeks (each session took 120 minutes).
The scales used in this study were Korean-Social Avoidance & Distress (K-SAD) and Texas Social Behavior Inventory (TSBI) to measure each social anxiety and self-concept. The researcher carried out ANOVA for each dependent variance social anxiety and self-concept. All data were treated with SPSS for window 12.0 and the statistical significant level was set at .05.
The conclusions of this study were as follows:
First, The cognitive - behavioral group counseling decreases high level social anxiety university students' social anxiety.
Second, The cognitive - behavioral group counseling doesn't improve high level social anxiety university students' self-concept.
